Transpiration and metabolisation of TCE by willow plants - a pot experiment.

Willows were grown in glass cylinders filled with compost above water-saturated quartz sand, to trace the fate of TCE in water and plant biomass. The experiment was repeated once with the same plants in two consecutive years. TCE was added in nominal concentrations of 0, 144, 288, and 721 mg l(-1). Unplanted cylinders were set-up and spiked with nominal concentrations of 721 mg l(-1) TCE in the second year. Additionally, (13)C-enriched TCE solution (δ(13)C = 110.3 ‰) was used. Periodically, TCE content and metabolites were analyzed in water and plant biomass. The presence of TCE-degrading micr

Confinement-Regulated Crystal Phase Engineering Enables Structured Semiconductor Fiber Systems for Plant Transpiration Dynamics Monitoring.

Transpiration is fundamental to plant life, yet its rhythms remain difficult to resolve because conventional sensing approaches perturb stomatal boundary layers, are limited to localized readouts, and struggle to reconcile moisture responsiveness with stable photodetection under dynamic humidity fluctuations. Herein, we report the first distributed plant microclimate mapping textile platform constructed from semiconductor fibers enabled by two distinct confinement-regulated crystal phase engineering strategies. Local spatially confined thermal reconfiguration induces optimized crystallization

Uptake and transpiration of solid and hollow SiO2 nanoparticles by terrestrial plant (Apium Graveolens var. secalinum).

Recent studies have raised concerns about the potential toxicity of amorphous silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs). This investigation explores the uptake, transport, and transpiration of silica NPs in Apium graveolens var. secalinum. The study reveals that SiO2 NPs can infiltrate the plant cell wall, translocate from roots to stems and leaves, leading to elevated silicon levels and posing ingestion exposure risks. Furthermore, the release of these NPs through transpiration droplets (481 ± 205 mg·m-2day-1 for 10 nm SiO2 NPs and 367 ± 22 mg·m-2day-1for 20 nm SiO2 NPs) presents significant health a

The diurnal course of plant water potential, stomatal conductance and transpiration in a papyrus (Cyperus papyrus L.) canopy.

The diurnal course of water potential, stomatal conductance and transpiration was measured on mature umbels (the major evaporating surface) of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus L.) growing in a fringing swamp on Lake Naivasha, Kenya.Umbel water potential declined only slightly during the morning but fell rapidly after midday to a minimum value of-1.5 M Pa in early afternoon. The two main structures forming the umbels, the bracteoles and rays, showed similar patterns of change of stomatal conductance throughout the day. The values of conductance indicate major stomatal opening during the morning, partia

Decoupling of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis in terrestrial plants under elevated temperature: a meta-analysis.

Elevated temperatures pose challenges to stomatal conductance, which regulates transpiration and photosynthesis. However, the coupling of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis may shift with warming. Here, we synthesize evidence from a meta-analysis of 207 studies to assess leaf physiological responses to warming. On average, the responses of stomatal conductance are highly variable, exhibiting no consistent directional trend, whereas transpiration increases and photosynthesis decreases, reflecting a shift towards transpirational cooling. Stomatal conductance declines until te

Drought, abscisic acid and transpiration rate effects on the regulation of PIP aquaporin gene expression and abundance in Phaseolus vulgaris plants.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Drought causes a decline of root hydraulic conductance, which aside from embolisms, is governed ultimately by aquaporins. Multiple factors probably regulate aquaporin expression, abundance and activity in leaf and root tissues during drought; among these are the leaf transpiration rate, leaf water status, abscisic acid (ABA) and soil water content. Here a study is made of how these factors could influence the response of aquaporin to drought. METHODS: Three plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) or aquaporins were cloned from Phaseolus vulgaris plants and their express

Influence of exposure time, physicochemical properties, and plant transpiration on the uptake dynamics and translocation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in the aquatic macrophyte Typha latifolia.

Typha latifolia is widely used as a phytoremediation model plant for organic compounds. However, the dynamic uptake and translocation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and their relationship with physicochemical properties, such as lipophilicity (LogKow), ionization behavior (pKa), pH-dependent lipophilicity (LogDow), exposure time and transpiration, are scarcely studied. In the current study, hydroponically grown T. latifolia was exposed to carbamazepine, fluoxetine, gemfibrozil, and triclosan at environmentally relevant concentrations (20 μg/L each). Eighteen out of thirty

Transpiration modulates phosphorus acquisition in tropical tree seedlings.

Several experiments were conducted with tropical tree and liana seedlings in which transpiration ratio and leaf phosphorus to carbon ratio (P:C) were measured. Transpiration ratio was expressed as kg H(2)O transpired g(-1) C incorporated into plant biomass, and leaf P:C as mg P g(-1) C. Leaf P:C was positively correlated with transpiration ratio across 19 species for plants grown under similar conditions (R(2) = 0.35, P < 0.01, n = 19). For five species in the dataset, multiple treatments were imposed to cause intra-specific variation in transpiration ratio. Within four of these

Influence of short-term macronutrient deprivation in maize on photosynthetic characteristics, transpiration and pigment content.

The aim of the research was to compare the impact of short-term deprivation of selected macronutrients (Ca, K, Mg and P) on the photosynthetic characteristics, transpiration and pigment content in maize. The strongest inhibition of photosynthesis was caused by a deprivation of Mg, which was visible as a decrease in the photosynthetic and transpiration rates, stomatal conductance, photosystem II (PSII) performance, chlorophyll and flavonol content with a simultaneously increased content of anthocyanins. In the K-deprived plants, a decrease in the photosynthetic rate was observed. However, the t

Latent manganese deficiency increases transpiration in barley (Hordeum vulgare).

To investigate if latent manganese (Mn) deficiency leads to increased transpiration, barley plants were grown for 10 weeks in hydroponics with daily additions of Mn in the low nM range. The Mn-starved plants did not exhibit visual leaf symptoms of Mn deficiency, but Chl a fluorescence measurements revealed that the quantum yield efficiency of PSII (F(v)/F(m)) was reduced from 0.83 in Mn-sufficient control plants to below 0.5 in Mn-starved plants. Leaf Mn concentrations declined from 30 to 7 microg Mn g(-1) dry weight in control and Mn-starved plants, respectively. Mn-starved plants had up to f

Wide vessels sustain marginal transpiration flux and do not optimize inefficient gas exchange activity under impaired hydraulic control and salinity.

Plants optimize water use and carbon assimilation via transient regulation of stomata resistance and by limiting hydraulic conductivity in a long-term response of xylem anatomy. We postulated that without effective hydraulic regulation plants would permanently restrain water loss and photosynthetic productivity under salt stress conditions. We compared wild-type tomatoes to a transgenic type (TT) with impaired stomatal control. Gas exchange activity, biomass, starch content, leaf area and root traits, mineral composition and main stems xylem anatomy and hydraulic conductivity were analyzed in

Copper effect on photosynthesis and transpiration in safflower.

The young leaves of safflower plants subjected to deficient supply of copper (0.00063 mg Cu L-1) developed visible symptoms of Cu deficiency and showed a decrease in chlorophyll concentration, Hill activity, net photosynthesis and transpiration. On giving normal supply of Cu (0.063 mg Cu L-1), these changes were partially reversed.

Unravelling the diversity in water usage among wild banana species in response to vapour pressure deficit.

The rise in global temperature is not only affecting plant functioning directly, but is also increasing air vapour pressure deficit (VPD). The yield of banana is heavily affected by water deficit but so far breeding programs have never addressed the issue of water deficit caused by high VPD. A reduction in transpiration at high VPD has been suggested as a key drought tolerance breeding trait to avoid excessive water loss, hydraulic failure and to increase water use efficiency. In this study, stomatal and transpiration responses under increasing VPD at the leaf and whole-plant level of 8 wild b

Trees suck. Notes on the physics of transpiration in trees.

The Cohesion Theory of the ascent of water in trees is a quiet triumph of modern science. Besides hydrodynamics, the physics of transpiration involves capillarity, evaporation and osmosis - phenomena which all have a history of considerable theoretical confusion. The aim of this paper is to supplement existing accounts of this physics in the plant science literature.

Comparative profiles of the cuticular chemicals and transpiration barrier properties in various organs of Chinese flowering cabbage and Chinese kale.

Plant cuticle as hydrophobic barrier covers almost all aerial plant organs. Herein the cuticular chemical components and the transpiration of various organs of Chinese flowering cabbage (CFC) and Chinese kale (CK) were comprehensively characterized. Numerous species- and organ-specific differences in morphological, chemical, and physiological levels were found. The various organs were relatively smooth in surface for CFC but glaucous with hollow tube- and plate-type crystals for CK. The chemical composition of cuticular waxes were very-long chain n-alkanes, ketones, secondary alcohols with a p

[Design and Preparation of Plant Bionic Materials Based on Optical and Infrared Features Simulation].

Due to the life characteristics such as physiological structure and transpiration, plants have unique optical and infrared features. In the optical band, because of the common effects of chlorophyll and water, plant leafs show spectral reflectance characteristics change in 550, 680, 1400 and 1900 nm significantly. In the infrared wave band, driven by transpiration, plants could regulate temperature on their own initiative, which make the infrared characteristics of plants different from artificial materials. So palnt bionic materials were proposed to simulate optical and infrared characteristi

Leaf transpiration plays a role in phosphorus acquisition among a large set of chickpea genotypes.

Low availability of inorganic phosphorus (P) is considered a major constraint for crop productivity worldwide. A unique set of 266 chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes, originating from 29 countries and with diverse genetic background, were used to study P-use efficiency. Plants were grown in pots containing sterilized river sand supplied with P at a rate of 10 μg P g-1 soil as FePO4 , a poorly soluble form of P. The results showed large genotypic variation in plant growth, shoot P content, physiological P-use efficiency, and P-utilization efficiency in response to low P supply. Further inv

Variation in Petal and Leaf Wax Deposition Affects Cuticular Transpiration in Cut Lily Flowers.

The vase life of cut flowers is largely affected by post-harvest water loss. Cuticular wax is the primary barrier to uncontrolled water loss for aerial plant organs. Studies on leaf cuticular transpiration have been widely conducted; however, little is known about cuticular transpiration in flowers. Here, the cuticular transpiration rate and wax composition of three lily cultivars were determined. The minimum water conductance of tepal cuticles was higher at the green bud than open flower stage. Lily cuticular transpiration exhibited cultivar- and organ-specific differences, where transpiratio

Limited Regulation of Canopy Water Use Efficiency by Stomatal Behavior Under Drought Propagation.

Water use efficiency (WUE) is a critical ecosystem function and a key indicator of vegetation responses to drought, yet its temporal trajectories and underlying drivers during drought propagation remain insufficiently understood. Here, we examined the trajectories, interdependencies and drivers of multidimensional WUE metrics and their components (gross primary production (GPP), evapotranspiration, transpiration (T), and canopy conductance (Gc)) using a conceptual drought propagation framework. We found that even though the carbon assimilation efficiency per stomata increases during drought, t

How does the VPD response of isohydric and anisohydric plants depend on leaf surface particles?

Atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) is the driving force for plant transpiration. Plants have different strategies to respond to this 'atmospheric drought'. Deposited aerosols on leaf surfaces can interact with plant water relations and may influence VPD response. We studied transpiration and water use efficiency of pine, beech and sunflower by measuring sap flow, gas exchange and carbon isotopes, thereby addressing different time scales of plant/atmosphere interaction. Plants were grown (i) outdoors under rainfall exclusion (OD) and in ventilated greenhouses with (ii) ambient air (AA) o
