Anti-tumor-promoting activities of euglobals from Eucalyptus plants.

To search for possible anti-tumor-promoters (chemopreventive agents), we carried out a primary screening of 21 euglobals (acylphloroglucinol-monoterpene or -sesquiterpene structures) isolated from the juvenile leaves of five species of Eucalyptus plants using an in vitro synergistic assay system. Of these compounds, euglobal-G1--G5 (1-5), -Am-2 (15) and -III (16) exhibited significant inhibitory effects on Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) activation induced by the tumor promoter, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Furthermore, the effects of compounds 1 and 16 on the cell cycle of Raji cells

An investigation of brain tumors among chemical plant employees using a sample-based cohort method.

Using a modification of the traditional cohort mortality methodology, risk estimates of death due to brain tumors were calculated for production and nonproduction employees of Dow Chemical U.S.A., Texas Division. A total of 25 malignant, benign and unspecified brain tumors were identified using a geographically limited record-linkage process. Expected deaths were extrapolated from 1,666 white males in a 5% sample of the 1940 through 1977 total workforce. The resulting sample-based standardized mortality ratios (which were not evaluated for statistical significance) suggest, at most, only a sli

A case-control study of brain tumor mortality at a Texas Chemical plant.

A plant-based case-control study was undertaken to investigate a possible excess of brain tumor mortality identified at a Texas Chemical plant from a sample-based cohort study. Work histories and presumptive exposures of 28 former employees who had died of primary intracranial neoplasms were contrasted with those of two matched comparison groups in an effort to identify a possible etiologic agent. Because the sample-based cohort study suggested they might be at increased risk, those employees hired prior to 1945, those employed from one to four years and those employed for 20 or more years wer

Plant polyphenols and tumors: from mechanisms to therapies, prevention, and protection against toxicity of anti-cancer treatments.

Polyphenolic molecules produced by higher plants in response to biotic and abiotic stresses exert numerous effects on tumorigenic cell transformation, and on tumor cells in vitro and in vivo, and may interact with conventional anti-tumor therapies. In the present review, we collected and critically discussed data on: (i) redox-dependent and redox-independent mechanisms underlying cytotoxic/cytostatic effects of PPs and their metabolites towards tumor cells and cytoprotection of normal cells; (ii) mechanisms of anti-angiogenic and anti-metastatic action of PPs; (iii) PPs-associated phototoxicit

Activities of Some Medicinal Plants on the Proliferation and Invasion of Brain Tumor Cell Lines.

Cancer is a debilitating disease that is on the increase in both developed and developing countries. Anticancer drugs are often expensive, have narrow spectrum of activities, and are associated with toxicities and side effects such as myelosuppression, immunosuppression, gastrointestinal disturbance, alopecia, skin toxicity, and hepatotoxicity. Plants have been the major source of anticancer drugs both in orthodox and traditional medicine. Many of the plants claimed by the traditional medicine practitioners (TMPs) to be effective in the treatment of cancer are yet to be evaluated scientificall

Plant-Produced Viral Nanoparticles Decorated with Nanobodies Against HER2 Improve Retention and Recruitment of Immune Cells in Solid Tumors.

Potato virus X (PVX), a filamentous, positive-sense RNA plant virus, has been engineered into a molecular tool for diverse biotechnological applications, including cancer cell targeting. Here, we present the production and functional characterization of genetically-encoded PVX-derived nanoparticles decorated with nanobodies targeting two common receptors in human cancer cells, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2). We first generated a series of PVX-derived nanoparticles displaying distinct nanobodies against EGFR and HER2 in Nicotiana benthamiana p

Antitumor potential of pacific plant extracts revealed using tumor spheroids and untargeted metabolomics.

BACKGROUND: The discovery of novel antitumor compounds remains a pressing need to address the global burden of cancer, particularly to fight treatment resistance and the lack of specificity of conventional therapies. The terrestrial flora from New Caledonia (NC), a biodiversity hotspot in the South Pacific, represents a rich and largely underexplored source of candidate antitumor natural products (NPs). PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the most potent antitumor extracts among a selection of plants from the terrestrial flora of NC and to further characterize their pharmacological potentia

[Tumor mortality and from other causes in asbestos cement workers at the Casale Montferrato plant]].

The present report updates a mortality cohort study of workers in the largest Italian asbestos cement plant. The plant had been active in Casale Monferrato in 1907-1986 and produced boards, corrugated sheets, tubes and high-pressure pipes. Raw material included both chrysotile and crocidolite but not amosite. Airborne asbestos concentrations were measured for the first time in 1971 (over 20 ff/cc in most areas). Regular monitoring started in 1978, when the concentration measured in most samples was below 1 ff/cc. The cohort included 3367 blue-collar workers (2605 men and 762 women) employed at

Cancer Stem Cells and Medicinal Plants, A Comprehensive Review of their Potential in Tumor Suppression and Recurrence Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) drive tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence due to their self-renewal and differentiation capacities. Herbal medicines offer potential for targeting CSCs by disrupting key pathways, inducing apoptosis, and enhancing the efficacy of conventional therapy. This review evaluates the effectiveness of plant-based compounds in suppressing CSCs across various cancers. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across databases (ISI Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts) up to March 2025, using keywords su

Plant-derived miRNAs: Cross-kingdom anti-tumor agents and next generation of oral biopharmaceuticals.

In recent years, plant-derived microRNAs (miRNAs), as a new type of cross-kingdom regulatory molecules, have shown great potential in anti-tumor therapy. These non-coding RNAs, about 20-24 nucleotides (nt) long, can stably exist in the human body through dietary intake and resist nuclease degradation through unique protective mechanisms, thereby achieving cross-kingdom gene regulation. Studies show that they can directly target tumor-related signaling pathways to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis and indirectly exert anti-tumor effects by regulating long non-coding RNAs an

Pantoea agglomerans infection behaving like a tumor after plant thorn injury: an unusual presentation.

Pantoea agglomerans infections in humans are uncommon. Most common infections reported are septic arthritis or synovitis. We report the case of a 25-year-old, healthy male, who presented with indurated swelling over the posterolateral aspect of his right thigh, associated with pain for one month. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed muscle edema with cystic areas in the posterior-most part of the vastus lateralis of the right thigh. The condition was clinically diagnosed as a right-sided benign tumor of the vastus lateralis muscle. However, Pantoea agglomerans was isolated on a culture of

Plant-Derived Modulators of Tumor Metabolism as Novel, Efficacious, and Low-Toxicity Therapeutic Agents for Cancer Treatment.

Metabolic reprogramming is a core hallmark of malignancy, enabling tumor cells to sustain rapid proliferation, evade immune elimination, and develop resistance to therapy. Although a wide range of plant-derived phytochemicals exhibit anticancer activity with comparatively low toxicity, their capacity to disrupt specific metabolic dependencies exploited by tumors has not been comprehensively synthesized. This review brings together current mechanistic evidence showing how major phytochemical classes, including polyphenols, terpenes and terpenoids, glucosinolates, and alkaloids, interfere with p

Planted Graphene Quantum Dots for Targeted, Enhanced Tumor Imaging and Long-Term Visualization of Local Pharmacokinetics.

While photoluminescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have long been considered very suitable for bioimaging owing to their protein-like size, superhigh photostability and in vivo long-term biosafety, their unique and crucial bioimaging applications in vivo remain unreachable. Herein, planted GQDs are presented as an excellent tool for in vivo fluorescent, sustainable and multimodality tumor bioimaging in various scenarios. The GQDs are in situ planted in the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) layer of PEGylated nanoparticles via a bottom-up molecular approach to obtain the NPs-GQDs-PEG nanocomposite.

Stearidonic acid, a plant-based dietary fatty acid, enhances the chemosensitivity of canine lymphoid tumor cells.

Lymphoma is the most common hematopoietic tumor in dogs and humans, with similar pathogenesis and therapeutic responses. Anticancer drugs like vincristine (VCR) and doxorubicin (DOX) are often used in treating lymphoma. However, the cure rate is generally poor due to chemoresistance. Here, we sought to determine whether stearidonic acid (SDA), a plant-based dietary fatty acid, sensitizes chemoresistant canine lymphoid-tumor cells. GL-1 B-cell lymphoid-tumor cells were found to be highly sensitive to the antitumor-activity of VCR and DOX, while OSW T-cell and 17-71 B-cell lymphoid-tumor cells w
