Plants Causing Toxic Myopathies.

Boxelder and sycamore maple contain hypoglycin A (HGA), the toxic metabolite of which, MCPA-CoA, inhibits fatty acid β-oxidation, causing seasonal pasture myopathy (SPM) or atypical myopathy (AM), respectively. White snakeroot and rayless goldenrod contain multiple benzofuran ketones (BFKs). The identity/toxicity of BFKs appear variable, possibly involving interactions between toxins/toxic metabolites, but ultimately inhibit cellular energy metabolism. Unthrifty horses grazing sparse pastures during the fall appear predisposed to these plant-associated, frequently fatal, toxic myopathies. Toxi

[Allergic and toxic cutaneous reactions to plants].

Numerous professional or leisure activities expose individuals to plants susceptible to provoke contact allergies. The immunological mechanisms that are responsible for these ailments (delayed cellular reaction linked to allergic dermatitis or immediate IgE mediated reaction of the allergic urticaria) differ according to the plant families involved. A differential diagnosis must be made in the case of the even more frequent non-allergic reactions implying either a simple mechanical irritation, or a contact with toxic substances. The role of UV (phytophotodermatosis), as well as the contact all

Chromium toxicity in plants.

Due to its wide industrial use, chromium is considered a serious environmental pollutant. Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is of recent concern. Toxicity of Cr to plants depends on its valence state: Cr(VI) is highly toxic and mobile whereas Cr(III) is less toxic. Since plants lack a specific transport system for Cr, it is taken up by carriers of essential ions such as sulfate or iron. Toxic effects of Cr on plant growth and development include alterations in the germination process as well as in the growth of roots, stems and leaves, which may affect total dry matter productio

Nickel Toxicity in Plants.

Nickel (Ni) is a ubiquitous trace metal and an essential ultra micronutrient. It is a constituent of several enzymes and is currently known to be involved in a number of physiological processes in plants, including nitrogen metabolism, growth and seed germination. However, at elevated concentrations, Ni exerts multiple toxic effects on various physiological processes, which leads to impaired plant growth and morphogenesis, and reduced productivity. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the mechanisms of Ni toxicity, analyzing its effects on enzyme activity, membrane structure and fun

Alpha-mannosidosis caused by toxic plants in ruminants of Argentina.

It is well known that several of the swainsonine-containing plant species found widespread around the world have a negative economic impact in each country. In Argentina, most of the information on the poisonous plant species that produce α-mannosidosis is published in Spanish and thus not available to most English-speaking researchers interested in toxic plants. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize the information about swainsonine-containing plants in Argentina, which are extensively distributed throughout different ecoregions of the country. To date, five species from three gen

Minimising toxicity of cadmium in plants--role of plant growth regulators.

A range of man-made activities promote the enrichment of world-wide agricultural soils with a myriad of chemical pollutants including cadmium (Cd). Owing to its significant toxic consequences in plants, Cd has been one of extensively studied metals. However, sustainable strategies for minimising Cd impacts in plants have been little explored. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are known for their role in the regulation of numerous developmental processes. Among major PGRs, plant hormones (such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene and salicylic acid), nitric o

[Liver toxicity of drugs of plant origin].

Herbal drugs are widely used and often contain highly active pharmacological compounds. Recently, reports have mounted about hepatotoxicity of herbal remedies which ranges from mild liver enzyme alterations to chronic liver disease and liver failure. Hepatotoxicity of Chinese herbs has been recognized, e.g. during treatment of patients with atopic eczema. However, the toxic compounds remain to be determined. Hepatic veno-occlusive disease may result from pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are contained in numerous plants worldwide. Teucrium chamaedrys, commonly referred to as germander, may cause h

[Environmental toxicity and direct renal toxicity from drugs: herbs and plants].

Traditional medicine is a widespread treatment method in the world. Despite the WHO's confirmation of the progressive spread of national policies responsible for controlling the production and distribution of phytotherapy, the risk of toxic side effects is high even if the real incidence is not known. These risks largely result from the self-prescription supported by the assumption that what is natural is not dangerous to health. The phytotherapic industry turnover is progressively increasing, favored by the ease with which products can be purchased without prescription in pharmacies in some c

The development of a low-toxic peroxyoxalate chemiluminescent system for light-emitting plants.

Light-emitting plants (LEPs) represent a promising technology for harnessing nature's processes for sustainable illumination. However, ensuring the long-term stability and efficiency of the emission without compromising plant health is critical. To address these issues, the experiment explored the creation of a chemiluminescent reaction using ethyl vanillin, a food flavoring compound, as an alternative to commercial chemiluminescent products, which are carcinogenic. Divanillyl oxalate (DVO) was used as a precursor in the chemiluminescence system, combined with an organic solvent, NaOH, H2O2, a

Bismuth interaction with plants: Uptake and transport, toxic effects, tolerance mechanisms - A review.

Bismuth (Bi) is a minor metal whose abundance on Earth is estimated at 0.025 ppm. Known since ancient times for its medical properties, its use in many industrial applications has increased significantly in recent years due to its physical and chemical properties. Considered less toxic than other metals, Bi has been defined as a "green metal" and has been suggested as a replacement for lead in many industrial processes. Although the occurrence of Bi in the environment is predicted to increase, there is still a lack of information on its interaction with biota. Even though it is absorbed by man

The insects as an assessment tool of ecotoxicology associated with metal toxic plants.

In this article, the assessment of lethal effects of Copper (Cu) on Luffa acutangula and Spinacia oleracea plants investigated in relation to the presence of insect species Oxycarenus hyalinipennis. The analysis of Cu-treated plants displays the information of rapid growth of Oxycarenus hyalinipennis species in triplicate. However, results showed that the impact of metal toxicity appeared as the reduced growth rate of plants, and dense growth of the insect species Oxycarenus halinipennis followed by the chewing/degradation of the toxic plant. The insect's inductees into polluted plants were ju

Role of plant metabolites in toxic liver injury.

Aphanamixis polystachya is a traditional medicinal plant of the Meliaceae family in India. A crude ethanolic extract of the leaf of this plant shows a beneficial effect on toxic liver injury. Its antihepatotoxic activity was evaluated on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury in a rat model. The assessment of hepatoprotective activity was evaluated by measuring the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum total bilirubin and albumin and histology of the l

Toxicity and removal of pesticides by selected aquatic plants.

Pesticides are being detected in water bodies on an increasingly frequent basis. The present study focused on the phytoremediation potential of selected aquatic plants to remove phytosanitary products from contaminated water. We investigated the uptake capacity of Lemna minor (L. minor), Elodea canadensis (E. canadensis) and Cabomba aquatica (C. aquatica) on three pesticides: copper sulphate (fungicide), flazasulfuron (herbicide) and dimethomorph (fungicide). Pesticide toxicity was evaluated by exposing plants to five concentrations (0-1 mg L(-1)) in culture media for 7d using chlorophyll fluo

[Plant-induced toxic and allergic dermatitis (phytodermatitis)].

Herbal products are being used increasingly for medical or cosmetic purposes. Many cosmetics contain plant extracts for fragrance. Sensitizing plants in cosmetics are tea tree oil, arnica, chamomile, yarrow, citrus extracts, common ivy, aloe, lavender, peppermint, and others. However, the sensitizing potential of these plants varies. Most of the sensitizing substances are sesquiterpene lactones or terpenes. The present paper reviews the various forms of phytodermatitis, including irritant plant dermatitis, phototoxic and photo-allergic dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, and airborne contact derm
