[Plasmodium ovale wallikeri and Plasmodium ovale curtisi Malaria in Senegal in 2016].

Recently in Senegal, a case of Plasmodium ovale malaria had led to a diagnostic difficulty due to the ignorance of this parasite and the neglect of it. The objective of this study was to actively investigate cases of P. ovale malaria that would be misdiagnosed in the health centre structures of Senegal. The study was conducted in three areas that reflect different epidemiological strata of malaria. Microscopy was performed by microscopy experts on suspected malaria patients. The results were validated by Rougemont real-time PCR. Positive P. ovale cases were genotyped by nested PCR targeting th

Recent advances in detection of Plasmodium ovale: implications of separation into the two species Plasmodium ovale wallikeri and Plasmodium ovale curtisi.

Recent molecular studies indicate that Plasmodium ovale malaria is caused by two closely related species of protozoan parasites, thereby imposing new challenges for detection and species differentiation. This minireview explores the potential value of innovative methods for the molecular diagnosis of malaria with a strong emphasis on the discrimination and genotyping of P. ovale wallikeri and P. ovale curtisi as well as tools for the simultaneous detection of P. ovale sp. An update for the widely used NP-1993 to NP-2005 (SSU rRNA) protocols for all human malaria parasites is discussed.

Plasmodium ovale: parasite and disease.

Humans are infected by four recognized species of malaria parasites. The last of these to be recognized and described is Plasmodium ovale. Like the other malaria parasites of primates, this parasite is only transmitted via the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. The prepatent period in the human ranges from 12 to 20 days. Some forms in the liver have delayed development, and relapse may occur after periods of up to 4 years after infection. The developmental cycle in the blood lasts approximately 49 h. An examination of records from induced infections indicated that there were an average of

Genome-scale comparison of expanded gene families in Plasmodium ovale wallikeri and Plasmodium ovale curtisi with Plasmodium malariae and with other Plasmodium species.

Malaria in humans is caused by six species of Plasmodium parasites, of which the nuclear genome sequences for the two Plasmodium ovale spp., P. ovale curtisi and P. ovale wallikeri, and Plasmodium malariae have not yet been analyzed. Here we present an analysis of the nuclear genome sequences of these three parasites, and describe gene family expansions therein. Plasmodium ovale curtisi and P. ovale wallikeri are genetically distinct but morphologically indistinguishable and have sympatric ranges through the tropics of Africa, Asia and Oceania. Both P. ovale spp. show expansion of the surfin v

Indigenous Plasmodium ovale malaria in Bangladesh.

In spite of the high prevalence of malaria in Southeastern Bangladesh, there remains a significant shortage of information regarding the presence of three of five human malaria parasites: Plasmodium ovale, P. malariae, and P. knowlesi. The presence of P. ovale and P. knowlesi has previously never been reported from Bangladesh. We used a genus- and species-specific nested polymerase chain reaction, targeting highly conserved regions of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene, to investigate the presence of malaria parasites in a total number of 379 patient samples in a survey of patient

LATENT INFECTIONS WITH PLASMODIUM OVALE MALARIA.

Two cases of Plasmodium ovale malaria acquired in West Africa appeared as primary delayed attacks after one year's continuous residence in Canada. Both patients took full prophylactic doses of chloroquine before, during, and for several weeks after exposure. The inadequacy of the 4-aminoquinolines for protection against latent benign tertian malaria is noted, and the use of primaquine is recommended. Paroxysms occurred in the evening and were accompanied by severe muscle pain, features considered typical of ovale malaria. One patient showed electrocardiographic changes and clinical signs of ca

Plasmodium ovale: Exploring an Atypical Presentation.

Malaria is an infection caused by five different Plasmodium species. The most common are Plasmodium falciparum and vivax. Plasmodium ovale is more rarely reported and mostly has a benign course. We present a case of a 40-year-old male with a six-day history of headaches, chills, and fever who was initially evaluated in our emergency room, from where he was discharged after a negative workup for malaria. He returned to the hospital five days later in septic shock. Now P. ovale was found in a blood smear. The patient was treated with three doses of intravenous artesunate, followed by a three-day

New type of SSUrDNA sequence was detected from both Plasmodium ovale curtisi and Plasmodium ovale wallikeri samples.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale is relatively unfamiliar to Chinese staff engaged in malaria diagnosis. In 2013, dried blood spots of four unidentified but suspected ovale malaria samples were sent to the National Malaria Reference Laboratory (NMRL) for reconfirmation. METHODS: Partial and complete, small, subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences of four samples were obtained with PCR-cloning-sequencing method. Obtained sequences were analyzed by aligning with each other and with nine SSU rDNA sequences of six known Plasmodium parasites. A phylogenetic tree was constructed based on complete SS

A Difficult Diagnosis of Plasmodium ovale Malaria.

Malaria is a major cause of suffering, disease, and death worldwide and is considered the most important of all human parasitic diseases. Malaria is still endemic in most tropical and sub-tropical areas and globalization has contributed to an increase of imported cases around the world. We report a Plasmodium ovale infection in a traveler with recent return from a long land trip across West Africa. He declared adherence to mefloquine chemoprophylaxis only at the start of the trip. Initially, he was seen at two different hospitals and in both he was screened for malaria by microscopy and rapid

A case of imported Plasmodium ovale malaria.

There have been reports in Korea of imported malaria cases of four Plasmodium species, but there has been no report of imported Plasmodium ovale malaria confirmed by molecular biological methods. We report an imported case of that was confirmed by Wright-Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smear and nested polymerase chain reaction targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. The amplified DNA was sequenced and compared with other registered P. ovale isolates. The isolate in this study was a member of the classic type group. The patient was a 44-yr-old male who had worked as a woodcutter in Côt

Plasmodium Ovale Malaria: Endemic Areas in Indonesia.

Plasmodium ovale consists of two subspecies - P. ovale wallikeri and P. ovale curtisi. Increased reports of imported malaria ovale in non-endemic regions and mixed infection of P. ovale with other Plasmodium species suggest that P. ovale might be under-detected during routine surveillance. Areas endemic with P. ovale have mostly been reported in African and Western Pacific countries. A recent case report in Indonesia indicated that regions with P. ovale endemicity are not only distributed in Lesser Sunda and Papua, but also in North Sumatra.

[Acute pericarditis associated with Plasmodium ovale malaria].

The purpose of this report is to describe a rare case of benign acute pericarditis associated with recurrent Plasmodium ovale malaria. It was observed in a 33-year-old soldier who was stationed in Djibouti after serving several previous stints in West Africa. A favorable clinical outcome was achieved using chloroquin (30 mg/kg on 6 days) in association with NSAID followed by salicylates for one month. Re-examination at one year showed no recurrence. This case shows that Plasmodium ovale malaria must be considered as a potential etiology for acute benign pericarditis in patients with a history

Plasmodium ovale malaria acquired in central Spain.

We describe a case of locally acquired Plasmodium ovale malaria in Spain. The patient was a Spanish woman who had never traveled out of Spain and had no other risk factors for malaria. Because patients with malaria may never have visited endemic areas, occasional transmission of malaria to European hosts is a diagnostic and clinical challenge.

Plasmodium ovale malaria acquired in Viet-Nam.

Four cases of Plasmodium ovale malaria are reported among US servicemen stationed in Viet-Nam between January 1966 and March 1969. Taken together with other cases cited by the authors, these provide strong evidence of the existence (sometimes disputed) of this Plasmodium in continental South-East Asia.None of the men had served in any other area of endemic malaria and their travel and medical histories suggest that all 4 infections were acquired by mosquito transmission. They constitute only 0.066% of the 6036 malaria cases reported among servicemen returning from Viet-Nam during this period a

Frequent Plasmodium ovale Recurrence in Coastal Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale are the most common malaria parasites found throughout sub-Saharan Africa capable of causing relapse, but little is known about their patterns of carriage and recurrence. METHODS: Asymptomatic adults and children >5 years of age living in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, who screened positive for P. ovale parasitemia by real-time polymerase chain reaction were enrolled and followed for up to 6 months, with biweekly polymerase chain reaction testing for P. ovale and Plasmodium falciparum infection. Those with persistent P. ovale carriage to 4 weeks, and those later diagnosed wi
