In 2016, two adult male sperm whales beached off of Yangkou Port in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, China. The local government planned to preserve them as specimens, one was entrusted to Dalian Hoffen Biological Co., Ltd., and thus became the first sperm whale to be preserved by plastination. The other sperm whale was preserved in Nantong by the traditional stripping method (The skin was preserved, and then the prosthesis was filled into the skin to preserve the specimens. The material of the prosthesis was polyurethane. The outline of the animal was sculpted by suturing the skin like a bag a

S3, S6 and S10 are the most commonly used agents for tissue plastination. Surprisingly, their chemical structures are not known. We therefore decided to fully characterize these products by standard analytical methods: multinucleus magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. These experiments have shown that Biodur S10 is a polydimethylsiloxane with a molecular weight of 27,200 and silanol functionalities, Biodur S6 is tetraethoxysilane, and Biodur S3 is a mixture the main component of which is dibutyltindilaurate.

In the early days of plastination, plastinate Color was the usual grey/brown familiar to formalin-fixed biological specimens. Initially, trials with Kaiserling's, Klotz, Jore's and McCormick's fixative solutions were disappointing. Vascular injections with Colored epoxy were a great breakthrough in the 1980s. Biodur AC10® stain was the first stain of note to be applied to gross specimens to be plastinated and was applied in the last acetone bath. As plastination became more popular, specimen Color became an important and necessary aspect. Reactivation of the normal Color of red blood cells wit

Purpose. The relatively new and less-invasive therapeutic alternative "interspinous process decompression device (IPD)" is expected to result in improved symptoms of neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) caused by lumbar spinal stenosis. The aim of the study was to analyze IPD position particularly regarding damage originating from surgical implantation. Methods. Anatomic assessments were performed on a fresh human cadaver. For the anatomic examination, the lumbar spine was plastinated after implantation of the IPDs. After radiographic control, serial 4 mm thick sections of the block plas

As early as 1955, there were studies on the multiple bellies of the temporalis muscle (TM), which is considered to contain two or three layers. However, some historical literature proposed that the sphenomandibularis (SM), one of the bellies of TM, should be considered a newly discovered independent muscle. Many scholars have extremely inconsistent views on this statement. Here, we conducted an anatomical study to clarify the existence and morphological characteristics of the SM. We dissected 14 formaldehyde-fixed and 6 fresh-frozen human cadaver heads using three approaches, including vascula

Plastination is a preservation method for biological specimens, with important advantages over classic conservation techniques with formaldehyde or alcohol. Plastinated specimens are dry, odourless, and free of carcinogenic and toxic solutions. There are only few references about the plastination of parasites. Moreover, there is no information on the effect of plastination on the morphology and morphometry of these animals. The aim of this study was to define a plastination protocol to preserve various species of parasites, namely the nematodes Parascaris equorum (Goeze, 1782); Ascaris suum Go

Plastination is an excellent tool for studying different anatomical and clinical questions. This technique is unique because it offers the possibility to produce transparent slices series that can be easily processed morphometrically. It is very difficult to recognize the subtle widening of the tibiofibular syndesmosis in less severe injuries of this articulation. Proper anatomic knowledge of the syndesmosis might be helpful. The ankle syndesmosis was investigated on 20 cadaver feet by using the E12 plastination technique. Each foot was cut into 1.6-mm transverse slices and then plastinated. T

Development, optimization and validation of transcranial ultrasound methods require the use of fresh human or animal skulls. However, to avoid fresh skull degradation over time, fixation methods are required for conservation, such as formaldehyde buffer solution. This method allows for conservation of the skull properties over a relatively long period, but requires specific conditioning (de-gassing) and storage conditions, such that its practical use is limited. Plastination appears to be a unique solution for the preservation and transportation of body parts without constraints. However, the

AIM: Preservation of macroparasites by infiltrating the polymer in the tissues can defy the inherited shortcoming of classical wet preservation method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preservation was done by infiltrating the melamine alone or with xylene (MX)/chloroform (MC)/turpentine oil (MT) in 1:1 and hardener (MH) in 9:1 ratio in the tissues of the gross specimen of the animal parasites.
RESULTS: The plastinated models withstand the process of microbial decomposition, and remain intact in the environmental conditions. The polymer mixture resists the entry of the water molecule, and model dried

The plastin family (PLS1, PLS2, PLS3) comprises highly conserved actin-binding proteins (ABPs) that regulate cytoskeletal dynamics by cross-linking actin microfilaments and play key roles in bone and cartilage development, homeostasis, and disease. PLS1 primarily stabilizes tight actin bundles in epithelial brush-border microvilli and has also been reported to support osteoblast differentiation via regulating intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis. In bone, PLS3 mutations lead to X-linked osteoporosis through mechanisms involving the inhibition of the WNT pathway, activation of TH17 cell differentiati

Mycosis fungoides (MF) and its leukemic variant, Sezary syndrome (SS), are the most common cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, with a combined incidence of 0.36 of 100,000 person-years. Although thought to be closely related to mature T-helper cells, the true nature of the cancer cells in MF/SS is unknown. In addition, there is no known specific marker for MF/SS cancer cells, which can result in difficulties in the diagnosis and treatment. To identify MF/SS-specific markers, Sezary cancer cells were analyzed with a global genomic screening tool, the modified representational difference analysis. It wa

For a long time, PLS3 (plastin 3, also known as T-plastin or fimbrin) has been considered a rather inconspicuous protein, involved in F-actin-binding and -bundling. However, in recent years, a plethora of discoveries have turned PLS3 into a highly interesting protein involved in many cellular processes, signaling pathways, and diseases. PLS3 is localized on the X-chromosome, but shows sex-specific, inter-individual and tissue-specific expression variability pointing towards skewed X-inactivation. PLS3 is expressed in all solid tissues but usually not in hematopoietic cells. When escaping X-ina

The present study aims to evaluate the morphometric and histopathological properties of Modified Elnady's plastinated tissue after a period compared to non-plastinated tissue. The plastination technique is utilized in research and teaching due to the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to formalin. The tissues and organs are permanently dried during plastination and can be used for further anatomical, histopathological and surgical educational purposes. This method involves drying tissue and allowing synthetic materials like glycerin to permeate it. The study compared non

Dissection and plastination of the nervous system have been used to teach anatomy; however, there is no record of a dissection and plastination of a dog's complete nervous system. The objective of this study was to dissect and preserve the whole nervous system of a dog, using the plastination technique, as a tool for teaching veterinary neuroanatomy. A 7-month-old dog was perfused through the common carotid artery with an ethanol-based soft embalming solution, and 10% formalin was injected through the cisterna magna. An incision was made at the level of the dorsal midline, and the muscle tissu

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) may be caused by the mechanical compression of the trigeminal nerve. In the studies on the location of mechanical irritation and entrapment of the nerve, attention has been paid mostly to vascular structures in the subarachnoid space. Few studies have explored the relationship between the trigeminal nerve and its surrounding structures along its course in the skull base. The aim of this study was to examine and trace the root, ganglion and three divisions of the trigeminal nerve and their relationships with surrounding soft and bony structures in the skull

The plastination technique is a recently developed option to preserve biological tissues widely used in human and veterinary anatomy. This process allows one to obtain real, safe, clean, dry, resistant and permanently stable material without any additional treatment or maintenance. All these advantages are associated with the rapid expansion of plastination during recent decades in a high number of educational institutions. However, the studies of parasite conservation through plastination are scarce, although the material obtained has a high quality, as prior references have shown. In this st
