Symbiotic associations have arisen independently in several groups of the largely free-living turbellarians. Morphological adaptations of turbellarians to a symbiotic way of life include suckers and adhesive glands for attachment, elaborate systems of microvilli and other epidermal structures for absorption of food, glands for the formation of cysts, cocoons and cement material, and lack of a pharynx and intestine in some species. However, many species closely resemble their free-living relatives. Egg production is greatly increased at least in some species, and life cycles are always direct.

The recently erected cestode order Diphyllobothriidea is unique among all tapeworm orders in that its species infect all major groups of tetrapods, including man. In the present paper, the vitellogenesis of representatives of all three currently recognized families of this order was evaluated, based on ultrastructural (transmission electron microscopy) and cytochemical (detection of glycogen) observations. Vitelline follicles of all taxa studied, i.e. Cephalochlamys namaquensis from clawed frogs (Xenopus), Duthiersia expansa from monitors (Varanus) and Schistocephalus solidus that matures in f

Studies on Brazil's helminthological fauna began in the early 20th century, and since then several zoologists from different parts of the country have focused on parasitology. Recent studies have advanced our understanding of helminthological biodiversity in the Amazon region, especially in fish, which is essential for the Amazonian economy. This study aimed to inventory the platyhelminth fauna Cuniculus paca (paca). The viscera of 30 pacas were analyzed, and 60 specimens of platyhelminths were identified, including 52 cestodes and 8 trematodes. Cestodes belonging to the family Davaneidae, ide

This paper describes a simple technique for staining of flatworms using lactophenol cotton blue (LPCB). The staining was tested on 2 trematode species: Heterophyes heterophyes and Mesostephanus appendiculatus, and one cestode: Diplopylidium acanthotetra, which were collected from the intestine of stray cats in Kuwait. The specimens were mounted in a small amount of the LPCB stain on a clean slide for 2-3 minutes before covering with a cover slip. The technique rapidly and clearly differentiated the internal structures of the helminthes. Its speed and simplicity are advantages over other staini

Khawia sinensis is an important species in freshwater fish causing considerable economic losses to the breeding industry. This is the first mt genome of a caryophyllidean cestode characterised. The entire mt genome of K. sinensis is 13,759 bp in length. This mt genome contains 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and two non-coding regions. The arrangement of the K. sinensis mt genome is the same as other tapeworms, however, the incomplete stop codon (A) is more frequent that other species. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenated amino-acid sequences of t

There are three major groups of parasitic platyhelminths (flatworms). The digeneans and cestodes are endoparasites, while the monogeneans are ectoparasites mostly on the gills or skin of fishes. Monogeneans are hermaphrodite and, with the exception of the gyrodactylids, mostly protandrous, the male reproductive system maturing before the female system. Their ectoparasitic life-style provides unique opportunities to observe the reproductive biology of living platyhelminths, opportunities restricted in digeneans and cestodes by their endoparasitic habits. Moreover, the male copulatory organs (MC

Humans are the only known definitive host of the tapeworm Taenia solium and become a carrier by eating undercooked pork contaminated with "Cysticercus cellulosae" (cysticerci). Pigs act as an intermediate host and acquire cysticercosis by ingestion of eggs or proglottids from human feces, which develop into cysticerci within tissue, mostly without causing clinical symptoms in the host. Cysticercosis occurs in humans in a context of "fecal peril" by ingestion of egg-contaminated soil, water, vegetation, or auto-infestation. It has been reported in the published data that the separation of swine

The study of the labelling of planaria with 99mTc shows that the incorporation of radioactivity in this platyhelminth increases with an increase in SnCl2 concentration from 0.13 to 1.3 microM, reaching a plateau in the range of 1.3-130 microM then decreasing with 1300 microM. At concentrations of 1.3 and 13 microM SnCl2, a stronger binding of 99mTc was obtained. The biological viability of the labelled planaria was not altered when the described methodology was used. The advantage of this new labelling technique is that it is possible to obtain a platyhelminth preparation labelled with a radio

Tapeworms (Cestoda, Platyhelminthes) are a highly diversified group of parasites that can have significant veterinary importance as well as medical impact as disease agents of human alveococcosis, hydatidosis, taeniosis/cysticercosis/neurocysticercosis, hymenolepidosis or diphyllobothriasis. Because of their great diversity, there has been keen interest in their phylogenetic relationships to other obligate parasitic platyhelminthes, as well as within the group itself. Recent phylogenetic analyses of cestodes, however, have focused on morphological, molecular, life cycle, embryology and host-sp

Fish are common definitive and intermediate hosts for a variety of parasitic flatworms. In unstressed wild populations, parasitic infections often go unnoticed and are perceived to represent a lesser threat to fish health. In contrast, platyhelminth parasitism of captive fish often results in decreased weight gain and increased mortality which often necessitates chemotherapeutic treatment. The presence of platyhelminth parasites in fish tissues is not only unappealing but in some cases also represents a threat to human health. In veterinary medicine, one of the most commonly used agents with a

We performed genome-wide identifications and comparative genomic analyses of the predicted aspartic proteases (APs) from eight parasitic flatworms, focusing on their evolution, potentials as drug targets and expression patterns. The results revealed that: i) More members of family A01 were identified from the schistosomes than from the cestodes; some evidence implied gene loss events along the class Cestoda, which may be related to the different ways to ingest host nutrition; ii) members in family A22 were evolutionarily highly conserved among all the parasites; iii) one retroviral-like AP in

Human fascioliasis, a zoonotic infection caused by the platyhelminths Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, is a neglected tropical disease geographically limited to regions in South America, Africa, and Middle and South East Asia. It primarily infects mammals, particularly cattle, which serve as definitive hosts, while freshwater snails act as intermediate hosts. Human infection occurs through ingesting metacercariae found in contaminated water or aquatic plants. The disease presents with right upper abdominal pain, fever, and, at times, jaundice, hepatomegaly, and biliary obstruction. Diagnosi

Fueled by the discovery of head regeneration in triclads (planarians) two and a half centuries ago, flatworms have been the focus of regeneration research. But not all flatworms can regenerate equally well and to obtain a better picture of the characteristics and evolution of regeneration in flatworms other than planarians, the regeneration capacity and stem cell dynamics during regeneration in the flatworm order Polycladida are studied. Here, we show that as long as the brain remained at least partially intact, the polyclad Prosthiostomum siphunculus was able to regenerate submarginal eyes, c

Muscle cells of a digenean fish blood fluke, Aporocotyle simplex, aggregate along the periphery of the cerebral ganglia. Solitary myocytons and sarcoplasmic processes with muscle fibres give rise to long, narrow lamellate projections, which are visible along the periphery and within ganglia. These ultrastructural observations suggest a switching of glial functions to muscle cells and represent additional evidence of the phylogenetic lability of glial cells in bilaterians.

In Brazil, there are three intermediate snail vectors and two potential hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. Previous studies showed three variant molecular profiles to B. amazonica and evidenced intraspecific variations using sequence data. In this context, the aim of this study was to verify whether such differences would correspond to either B. amazonica or B. cousini. The snails were morphologically identified; PCR-RFLP and sequencing were carried out. Besides, B. cousini were submitted to susceptibility experiments to S. mansoni. Noteworthy, morphological data of Brazilian specimens predominantl

BACKGROUND: The TNF signaling pathway is involved in the regulation of many cellular processes (such as apoptosis and cell proliferation). Previous reports indicated the effect of human TNF-α on metabolism, physiology, gene expression and protein phosphorylation of the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni and suggested that its TNF receptor was responsible for this response. The lack of an endogenous TNF ligand reinforced the idea of the use of an exogenous ligand, but also opens the possibility that the receptor actually binds a non-canonical ligand, as observed for NGFRs.
METHODS: To obtain a

BACKGROUND: The genus Allostoma von Beneden, 1861 (Pseudostomidae Graff, 1904) consists of generally small, often conspicuously colored species. These organisms are typically found on hard bottoms, in gravel, or among algae in marine and brackish-water environments. The Pseudostomid taxon encompasses approximately 55 known species globally, spanning regions across Europe, Asia, and North and South America. In Japan, however, only three species of this taxon have been reported to date: Allostoma durum (Fuhrmann, 1896), Allostoma densissimabursa (Omi, 2020) comb. nov., and Cylindrostoma monotroc

Parasitic platyhelminths (Trematoda, Monogenea, and Cestoda) are responsible for widespread disease in wild and cultured fish in both freshwater and marine environments globally, impacting both human health and the sustainability of aquaculture industries. Research into these parasites primarily aims to understand the impact of infections on host species, as well as developing management strategies to reduce or eliminate disease. -Omics-based research can assist in uncovering the biology of these parasites across a range of key areas, including understanding host-pathogen interactions, identif

The Echinostomatoidea is a large, cosmopolitan group of digeneans currently including nine families and 105 genera, the vast majority parasitic, as adults, in birds with relatively few taxa parasitising mammals, reptiles and, exceptionally, fish. Despite the complex structure, diverse content and substantial species richness of the group, almost no attempt has been made to elucidate its phylogenetic relationships at the suprageneric level based on molecules due to the lack of data. Herein, we evaluate the consistency of the present morphology-based classification system of the Echinostomatoide

SIGNIFICANCE: Platyhelminth parasites cause chronic infections that are a major cause of disability, mortality, and economic losses in developing countries. Maintaining redox homeostasis is a major adaptive problem faced by parasites and its disruption can shift the biochemical balance toward the host. Platyhelminth parasites possess a streamlined thiol-based redox system in which a single enzyme, thioredoxin glutathione reductase (TGR), a fusion of a glutaredoxin (Grx) domain to canonical thioredoxin reductase (TR) domains, supplies electrons to oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and thioredoxin (Tr
