Cusp pliability of the mitral valve: Doppler-echocardiographic and computer-tomographic study.

In order to study the mitral cusp pliability and calcification "in vivo" on the basis of the difference in the maximal and effective valve area, the Doppler-echocardiographic and computer tomographic method was used. The cusp pliability on the basis of the difference between the maximal and effective mitral valve area in absolute measures of cm2 was significantly smaller in patients with mitral stenosis, but in the deviations from normal indexed values of cusp pliability excluding the influence of the anatomic or maximal orifice area, there were no significant differences (normal values 0.00 +

Assessment of Pliability and Elasticity of the External Nasal Skin in Patients With Unilateral Nasal Valve Collapse: A Static Biomechanical Evaluation.

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the skin biomechanics, specifically pliability and elasticity, in patients with nasal valve collapse may allow for new methods to assess which patients require more advanced nasal valve surgery. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that in patients with unilateral nasal valve collapse, the side of the nose with the collapse will have lower elasticity and increased pliability compared with the normal side, as assessed by a blinded observer using the Cutometer MPA 580. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective, investigator-blinded, case-control cohort study of pati

Alterations in the Elasticity, Pliability, and Viscoelastic Properties of Facial Skin After Injection of Onabotulinum Toxin A.

IMPORTANCE: This prospective cohort study provides evidence and information on the mechanism of action of onabotulinum toxin A on the reduction of skin elasticity and pliability. Understanding the natural course that onabotulinum toxin A has on the elasticity of skin may help physicians understand why there appears to be a progressive reduction in wrinkle levels with repeated treatments. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether onabotulinum toxin A increases skin pliability and elasticity with a corresponding decrease in the contribution of the viscoelastic component of skin resistance. Developmental momentum toward substance dependence: natural histories and pliability of risk factors in youth experiencing chronic stress.

BACKGROUND: Mitigation of substance use (SU) disorder (SUD) risk factors is a common goal of prevention. Research has clarified much about risk factors including their prediction of SU/SUD, associations with other etiological variables and mediation of SU outcomes. Greater understanding of the emergence of risk factors themselves may improve prevention. For example, in lieu of experimental data, the level of resistance to change of a risk factor (its pliability) could inform "dosage" of intervention needed to reduce the risk. METHODS: Two attributes of 22 previously-documented predictors of S

Effects of Kinesio Tape on Vascularity, Pliability, and Height of the Hypertrophic Scar in Burns Patients: A Randomized Pilot Clinical Trial.

Deep burns damage the reticular dermis and may lead to the formation of hypertrophic scars. Compression therapy reduces local vascularity and realigns collagen fibers, resulting in esthetic and functional improvements. This study evaluated the effect of Kinesio tape compression with maximum mechanical tension on vascularity, pliability, and the height of hypertrophic scars following deep burns. A single-blind, randomized pilot clinical trial was carried out. The elastic compression of Kinesio tape was applied at maximum stretch in the intervention group (n = 11) and no stretch in the sham grou

Pathophysiology of Fibrosis in the Vocal Fold: Current Research, Future Treatment Strategies, and Obstacles to Restoring Vocal Fold Pliability.

Communication by voice depends on symmetrical vibrations within the vocal folds (VFs) and is indispensable for various occupations. VF scarring is one of the main reasons for permanent dysphonia and results from injury to the unique layered structure of the VFs. The increased collagen and decreased hyaluronic acid within VF scars lead to a loss of pliability of the VFs and significantly decreases their capacity to vibrate. As there is currently no definitive treatment for VF scarring, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering have become increasingly important research areas within otolaryn

Maturation of Elasticity, Pliability and Colour of Thin Split-Thickness Skin Grafts on Deep Dermal and Muscular Wound Bed Within the Course of 1 Year.

Split-thickness skin grafts are commonly used for reconstruction of soft tissue defects with a well-vascularised wound bed. This study evaluated changes in scar elasticity, pliability, erythema and pigmentation during scar maturation and compared scars on deep dermal versus muscular wound beds. Seventeen graft scars on deep dermal wound beds and five on muscular wound beds were assessed at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively using the Vancouver, Hamilton and Manchester scar scales, as well as a visual analog scale. Objective measurements included skin elasticity and pliability (Cutometer) an

A one year follow-up on quality of adherent scars after autologous fat grafting processed by a filtration technique.

Autologous fat grafting (AFG), mostly in combination with adhesiolysis, has become the workhorse for reconstructing a dysfunctional or absent subcutaneous layer. In a previous study we showed that fat grafts isolated by centrifuging led to more than 20 % improvement in scar pliability. Nevertheless, there is still debate on which technique should be used to process and purify fat grafts. Therefore, a cohort with matured scars was obtained using the same study protocol but with filtration as processing technique. Scar quality was evaluated by the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSA

Photodynamic therapy: an innovative approach to the treatment of keloid disease evaluated using subjective and objective non-invasive tools.

Optimal management for keloid disease (KD) is ill defined, with surgical excision resulting in recurrence rates over 50 %. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses light to activate a photosensitiser localised in diseased tissues. Two recent case studies and in vitro studies on keloid-derived fibroblasts indicate potential use of PDT in treating KD. Therefore, we hypothesized that there may be a role for PDT in the treatment of KD. Twenty KD patients were divided into three groups; existing keloid scar, post-surgical debulking and post-total surgical excision. Patients underwent three treatments of PDT

Longitudinal burn scar quantification.

Quantitative studies of the clinical recovery of burn scars are currently lacking. Previous reports validate the objective, precise, diagnostic capabilities of high-frequency ultrasound to measure thickness, the Cutometer(®) to measure pliability and the Mexameter(®) to measure erythema and pigmentation of scars. Thus, we prospectively quantified clinical characteristics of patient-matched, after burn hypertrophic scar (HSc), donor site scar (D) and normal skin (N) using these instruments. One investigator measured 3 sites (HSc, D, N) in 46 burn survivors at 3, 6, and 12 months after-burn. A m
