Plutonium in bone: a high resolution autoradiographic study using plutonium-241.

Plutonium-241 citrate solution at pH 6-5 was injected intravenously into hamsters and an adult rabbit at a dose of 10 kBq g-1 (260 nCi g-1). The hamsters were killed serially at 15 min, 2 hours, 1 day, 10 days, 1 month and 6 months after injection and the rabbit at 1 week. Their knee-joints or femora were examined for plutonium-241 by autoradiography. Few differences were found between the pattern of plutonium distribution in the hamsters and the rabbit. The results showed that although plutonium is initially distributed on bone surfaces, at long periods after injection it becomes deposited th

Mortality among plutonium and other radiation workers at a plutonium weapons facility.

Mortality among 5,413 white males who were employed for at least two years at a plutonium weapons facility was investigated to measure risks from exposures to low levels of plutonium and external radiation. When compared with US death rates, fewer deaths than expected were found for all causes of death, all cancers, and lung cancer. No bone cancer was observed. An excess of brain tumors was found for the cohort in general. Elevated rate ratios for all causes of death and all lymphopoietic neoplasms were found when employees with plutonium body burdens greater than or equal to 2 nCi were compar

Improved Modeling of Plutonium-DTPA Decorporation.

Individuals with significant intakes of plutonium (Pu) are typically treated with chelating agents, such as the trisodium salt form of calcium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (CaNa3-DTPA, referred to hereafter as Ca-DTPA). Currently, there is no recommended approach for simultaneously modeling plutonium biokinetics during and after chelation therapy. In this study, an improved modeling system for plutonium decorporation was developed. The system comprises three individual model structures describing, separately, the distinct biokinetic behaviors of systemic plutonium, intravenously injected Ca-

Distribution of plutonium and radium in the human heart.

Since 1968, the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR) has studied the biokinetics and tissue dosimetry of uranium and transuranium elements in nuclear workers. As part of the USTUR collaboration with the Million Person Study (MPS) of Low-Dose Health Effects, radiation dose to different parts of the human heart is being estimated for workers with documented intakes of 239Pu or 226Ra. The study may be expanded for workers with intakes of 238U and other radionuclides. The distribution of radionuclides, expressed in terms of concentration (Bq per kg of tissue) serves as an impo

Development of the Plutonium-DTPA Biokinetic Model.

Estimating radionuclide intakes from bioassays following chelation treatment presents a challenge to the dosimetrist due to the observed excretion enhancement of the particular radionuclide of concern where no standard biokinetic model exists. This document provides a Pu-DTPA biokinetic model that may be used for making such determination for plutonium intakes. The Pu-DTPA biokinetic model is intended to supplement the standard recommended biokinetic models. The model was used to evaluate several chelation strategies that resulted in providing recommendations for effective treatment. These rec

An update of epidemiologic studies of plutonium workers.

Retrospective and prospective epidemiologic studies are being conducted as part of a national survey of plutonium workers at four Department of Energy facilities (Los Alamos, NM; Rocky Flats, CO; Mound Laboratory, OH; and Savannah River, SC). A preliminary analysis of mortality was done for all white males who have worked at the Rocky Flats Plant during the period 1952-79. The 452 observed deaths were significantly fewer than the 831 expected for all causes. The 107 deaths due to all malignant neoplasms were also significantly fewer than the 167 expected from these diseases. Expected deaths we

Going deeper into plutonium sorption affected by redox.

Sorption of Pu(VI) onto synthesized goethite under oxidizing and normal conditions was investigated, which revealed its pH dependence on different solid/liquid ratios. Pu speciation upon sorption on the solid phase was characterized via extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, while that in solution was assessed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and liquid-liquid extraction. The obtained results demonstrate differences in plutonium behavior in the studied systems. Pu(VI) remains hexavalent on the goethite surface and in solution under oxidizing conditions. W

Plutonium-DTPA Model Application with USTUR Case 0269.

A plutonium-DTPA (Pu-DTPA) biokinetic model was introduced that had originated from the study of a plutonium-contaminated wound. This work evaluated the extension of the Pu-DTPA model to United States Transuranium and Uranium Registry (USTUR) Case 0269 involving an acute inhalation of a plutonium nitrate aerosol. Chelation was administered intermittently for the first 7 mo as Ca-EDTA, mostly through intravenous injection, with Ca-DTPA treatments administered approximately 2.5 y post intake. Urine and fecal bioassays were collected following intake for several years. Tissues were collected and

Microdosimetric considerations of lung cancer risks from plutonium.

New data from the workers at the Mayak nuclear facility near Chelyabinsk, Russia, apparently show a linear increase in the risk of lung cancer with increasing dose. Furthermore, this increase occurs without a threshold. However, these conclusions are at variance with the results reported by other investigators. A possible cause of these inconsistencies could be the lack of application of microdosimetric considerations when discussing "dose" to the lung.

Toxicity of inhaled plutonium dioxide in beagle dogs.

This study was conducted to determine the biological effects of inhaled 238PuO2 over the life spans of 144 beagle dogs. The dogs inhaled one of two sizes of monodisperse aerosols of 238PuO2 to achieve graded levels of initial lung burden (ILB). The aerosols also contained 169Yb to provide a gamma-ray-emitting label for the 238Pu inhaled by each dog. Excreta were collected periodically over each dog's life span to estimate plutonium excretion; at death, the tissues were analyzed radiochemically for plutonium activity. The tissue content and the amount of plutonium excreted were used to estimate

Clinical Therapy of Patients Contaminated with Polonium or Plutonium.

Although most of the harmful radionuclides are of anthropogenic origin and released from military or industrial processes, radioactive substances, such as uranium, also occur naturally in the environment. Low standards of care at nuclear facilities can lead to the contamination of employees with radionuclides due to inhalation of gases or dust or contamination of skin or wounds. Various sources for radionuclide exposure may present concerns for radioactive polonium or plutonium exposure, for instance, terrorist actions on the infrastructure, such as on drinking water basins. Early health effec

Validation of a system of models for plutonium decorporation therapy.

A recently proposed system of models for plutonium decorporation (SPD) was developed using data from an individual occupationally exposed to plutonium via a wound [from United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR) Case 0212]. The present study evaluated the SPD using chelation treatment data, urine measurements, and post-mortem plutonium activities in the skeleton and liver from USTUR Case 0269. This individual was occupationally exposed to moderately soluble plutonium via inhalation and extensively treated with chelating agents. The SPD was linked to the International Commission

Decorporation of plutonium by pulmonary administration of Ca-DTPA dry powder: a study in rat after lung contamination with different plutonium forms.

This study evaluates the decorporation efficacy of a pulmonary administration of a new Ca-DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) dry powder (18 micromol kg(-1) of body mass) after pulmonary contamination of rats with different Pu compounds. After inhalation of PuO2, a delayed intratracheal administration of DTPA cannot reduce significantly the retention of Pu in the lungs but limits its transfer in liver and skeleton. After pulmonary contamination by Pu nitrate, early insufflation of the DTPA powder appears twice as more efficient than an i.v injection of DTPA (30 micromol kg(-1)) to reduce

Plutonium mobilization from contaminated estuarine sediments, Esk Estuary (UK).

Since 1952, liquid radioactive effluent containing238-242Pu, 241Am, 237Np, 137Cs, and 99Tc has been released with authorization from the Sellafield nuclear complex (UK) into the Irish Sea. This represents the largest source of plutonium (Pu) discharged in all western Europe, with 276 kg having been released. In the Eastern Irish Sea, the majority of the transuranic activity has settled into an area of sediments (Mudpatch) located off the Cumbrian coast. Radionuclides from the Mudpatch have been re-dispersed via particulate transport in fine-grained estuarine and intertidal sediments to the Nor

2.2.2-Cryptand complexes of neptunium(III) and plutonium(III).

New coordination environments are reported for Np(III) and Pu(III) based on pilot studies of U(III) in 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt). The U(III)-in-crypt complex, [U(crypt)I2][I], obtained from the reaction between UI3 and crypt, is treated with Me3SiOTf (OTf = O3SCF3) in benzene to form the [U(crypt)(OTf)2][OTf] complex. Similarly, the isomorphous Np(III) and Pu(III) complexes were obtained similarly starting from [AnI3(THF)4]. All three complexes (1-An; An = U, Np, Pu) contain an encapsulated actinide in a THF-soluble complex. Absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations are consistent with 5f3 U(I

Three plutonium chelation cases at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Chelation treatments with dosages of 1 g of either Ca-DTPA (Trisodium calcium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) or Zn-DTPA (Trisodium zinc diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) were undertaken at Los Alamos Occupational Medicine in three recent cases of wounds contaminated with metallic forms of Pu. All cases were finger punctures, and each chelation injection contained the same dosage of DTPA. One subject was treated only once, while the other two received multiple injections. Additional measurements of wound, urine, and excised tissues were taken for one of the cases. These additional measurements s

Bioremediation processes for removing plutonium from the environment: a review.

Plutonium (Pu) contamination poses a significant and persistent environmental challenge due to its radiotoxicity, long half-life, and mobility in ecosystems. Traditional remediation approaches, such as soil excavation, chemical stabilization, and vitrification, are often prohibitively expensive, environmentally disruptive, and generate secondary radioactive waste. Bioremediation, an emerging and sustainable alternative, utilizes microorganisms and plants to sequester, transform, or immobilize plutonium in contaminated environments.
