Endogenous lipid pneumonia has previously been diagnosed in dogs only once. This report describes a case in a dog with a persistent cough, in which the histological diagnosis was based on the presence of numerous foamy macrophages that filled the alveoli and contained small sudanophilic vacuoles. The appearance of endogenous lipid pneumonia in this animal was accompanied by Dirofilaria immitis infection and chronic bronchitis.

Exogenous lipid pneumonia is an uncommon condition resulting from the aspiration or inhalation of fat or oil material. The prognosis in this entity is usually good and complications are rare. We report an unusual case of chronic lipid pneumonia complicated with massive haemoptysis who responded to steroid therapy after arterial embolization.

We describe lipid pneumonia in 5 of 24 Arctic foxes ( Vulpes lagopus) in association with morbillivirus infection, and lymphoid depletion in 3 of these 5 foxes. Canine distemper virus (CDV) immunohistochemistry yielded positive staining in lung, lymph nodes, spleen, adipose tissue, and renal pelvic urothelial cells in 5 cases. Liver and bone marrow samples collected from these cases tested positive for morbillivirus by reverse-transcription PCR assay. Strains belonged to the CDV Arctic lineage based on sequencing of the hemagglutinin gene followed by phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic analysi

Endogenous lipid pneumonia was present in 19 of 27 opossums (Didelphis virginiana) trapped in the vicinity of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The severity of lesions varied from small pleural and subpleural aggregates of foamy macrophages with minimal disruption of pulmonary architecture to large nodular accumulations of foam cells with cholesterol clefts and localized emphysema. The cause of the lipid pneumonia may be related to pulmonary nematode parasite infections, which were evident in 13 of the affected animals.

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) is a rare interstitial pulmonary disease caused by aspiration of the oily material. It is known to mimic many pulmonary diseases and causes many diagnostic difficulties. We present four patients with ELP. The clinical picture was very heterogenous. We described these cases to show that the use of the mineral oils may increase the risk of lipoid pnemonia.

The changes in serum triglycerides, cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were followed in patients with pneumonia caused by different bacteria or viruses as well as in those with no defined aetiology. In the acute phase of the disease there was: 1) a fall in serum triglycerides in patients with bacteremic pneumococcal disease and in patients with no defined aetiology (p less than 0.01 and less than 0.005, respectively). 2) a reduction in cholesterol in all aetiological groups (p less than 0.001) except for those with viral pneumonias, where only 4 patients were studied, a

Lipoid pneumonia (LP) is an uncommon form of pneumonia that is characterized by the presence of intra-alveolar lipid and lipid-laden macrophages on microscopy. It categorized as exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ExLP) and endogenous lipoid pneumonia (EnLP). Exogenous lipoid pneumonia caused by inhalation of liposuction substances (animal fat, vegetable oil, or mineral oil), mostly, in adult cases, they were medicines for constipation or rhinopharyngitis. Most of these patients showed mild clinical manifestations, and chronic medical condition. There were reports of lipoid pneumonia being successfull

OBJECTIVE: To document the first successful treatment of a patient with Hansenula anomala pneumonia.
CASE SUMMARY: A healthy 32-year-old white man who underwent splenectomy and aortic repair following a motor vehicle accident developed a life-threatening infection 2 days after admission into the intensive care unit (ICU). A rare fungus, H. anomala, was isolated from his lungs, blood, and urine. Lipid complex amphotericin B (ABLC) was initiated following worsening signs of infection complicated by renal failure. The patient received ABLC for 17 days, eventually making a full recovery, allowing

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Exogenous lipid pneumonia with mineralisation of the lung parenchyma was diagnosed in three cats with radiographs, CT and/or bronchoalveolar lavage cytological findings. All three cats had a common clinical history of chronic constipation and long-term forced oral administration of mineral oil. All three cases showed radiographic findings compatible with aspiration pneumonia, with an alveolar pattern in the ventral part of the middle and/or cranial lung lobes. Minor improvement of the radiographic lung pattern in the follow-up studies was seen in two cats, and a miliary 's

A 1-year-old female ferret was presented with an acute history of severe respiratory distress. Abnormal clinical signs noted during the initial physical examination were hypothermia, dehydration, pale mucous membranes, tachypnea, and severe dyspnea. Thoracic radiographs revealed pleural effusion, an enlarged cardiac silhouette, and areas of lung consolidation. Both blood and thoracic fluid were hyperproteinemic and hypergammaglobulinemic. Antibiotic, corticosteroid, and diuretic supportive treatment provided temporary improvement. After the initial positive response to treatment, the ferret's

A free-living yearling male brown bear (Ursus arctos) was observed in the wild, exhibiting marked ataxia, and died shortly after undergoing a standard immobilization procedure. The brown bear is a strictly protected species in many countries, including Poland, under both national and international legislation, as well as several conservation agreements. Autopsy revealed marked gross changes in the lungs. Histopathological examination showed multifocal infiltration of foamy macrophages within the alveolar and bronchiolar lumen. The presence of Sudanophilic vacuoles within macrophages supported

Lipid pneumonia is exceedingly rare, with only a few reported cases to date. A 46-year-old woman with a history of left breast cancer underwent a left-modified radical mastectomy, adjuvant chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Despite no known exposure to lipids, she presented with chronic non-productive cough and general malaise. Follow-up chest computed tomography revealed progressive ground-glass opacities in the left lower lung, initially suspected to be lobar bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Surgical intervention was performed for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, confirming the lesion as

Different stages of lipoid pneumonia development provoked by mineral oil aerosole in white mice have been studied by electron microscopy and histochemistry. The first changes are most pronounced in blood capillaries. Foreign body material is actively absorbed by interstitial mononuclears and alveolar macrophages. However, its active digestion is observed only in the cytoplasm of alveolar macrophages that show off in abundance in early granuloma. Subsequently, fibroblasts are concentrated in the interstitium and small granulomas that can produce atelectasis and pneumosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is highly prevalent, yet lipid metabolism in the human pneumonic lung remains poorly characterized despite its essential role in pulmonary homeostasis and disease. Here, we report a systematic histological and molecular analysis of lipid deposition in pneumonias of different etiologies.
METHODS: We analyzed fatal COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 pneumonias. Patients underwent ante mortem chest CT and were subsequently examined at autopsy; non-pneumonic autopsy lungs served as controls. Lipid accumulation was visualized on OsO4-postfixed semi-thin sections and Sudan III/Oil Red

We report a case of lipoid pneumonia complicated by supra-infection with Mycobacterium fortuitum. The diagnosis of a lipoid pneumonia was suggested by the CT Scanner which showed a negative density in the pneumonic tissue. The supra-infection by the mycobacterium dit not change the radiological opacities which stayed the same following a cure of the mycobacterial infection. A histo-pathological study showed evidence of macrophages with voluminous lipid inclusions but equally the atypical mycobacteria were associated with a giant cell-epithelioid reaction. In patients with a lipoid pneumonia th

BACKGROUND: Penicillin-resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae is mainly due to alterations in genes encoding the target enzymes for beta-lactams, the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). However, non-PBP genes are altered in beta-lactam-resistant laboratory mutants and confer decreased susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics. Two piperacillin resistant laboratory mutants of Streptococcus pneumoniae R6 contain mutations in the putative glycosyltransferase gene cpoA. The CpoA gene is part of an operon including another putative glycosyltransferase gene spr0982, both of which being homologous to

Macrophages are integral components of the innate immune system, playing a dual role in host defense during infection and pathophysiological states. Macrophages contribute to immune responses and aid in combatting various infections, yet their production of abundant proinflammatory cytokines can lead to uncontrolled inflammation and worsened tissue damage. Therefore, reducing macrophage-derived proinflammatory cytokine release represents a promising approach for treating various acute and chronic inflammatory disorders. However, limited macrophage-specific delivery vehicles have hindered the d
