Viral pneumonias are common in infants and young children but rare in adults. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and para-influenza viruses are the most frequent viral pathogens in infants and children. Influenza virus types A and B account for over one half of viral pneumonias in adults. Immunocompromised hosts are susceptible to pneumonias caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other herpesviruses, as well as rubeola and adenovirus. Diagnosis of viral pneumonia depends on appropriate viral cultures and acute and convalescent sera for specific antibodies. Superinfection with bacteria is common in

Viruses are becoming more and more important as etiological agents of pneumonia, mainly due to improvements in diagnostic techniques. At present, they account for approximately one-third of community-acquired pneumonia cases. They tend to occur in children and elderly patients, causing anything from mild cases to severe cases which require intubation and intensive care. The main causative agents include rhinovirus, influenza virus A or B, metapneumovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza virus, coronavirus, or adenovirus. Infection produced by SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the current COV

Viral pneumonia is usually community acquired and caused by influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneumovirus, and adenovirus. Many of these infections are airway centric and chest imaging demonstrates bronchiolitis and bronchopneumonia, With the exception of adenovirus infections, the presence of lobar consolidation usually suggests bacterial coinfection. Community-acquired viral pathogens can cause more severe pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts, who are also susceptible to CMV and varicella infection. These latter 2 pathogens are less likely to manifest the strik

Among the viruses possibly responsible for hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia, herpes simplex virus (HSV) is probably the most often involved: HSV reactivation is frequent in intensive care unit patients, and lung parenchymal infection (HSV bronchopneumonitis) has been well described, either using cytological signs of parenchymal involvement in cells obtained during bronchoalveolar lavage or using HSV virus load in the lower respiratory tract. Although treating patients with HSV bronchopneumonitis may be recommended, based on expert opinion, prophylactic or preemptive treatm

Influenza and other respiratory viruses are commonly identified in patients with community-acquired pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and in immunocompromised patients with pneumonia. Clinically, it is difficult to differentiate viral from bacterial pneumonia. Similarly, the radiological findings of viral infection are in general nonspecific. The advent of polymerase chain reaction testing has enormously facilitated the identification of respiratory viruses, which has important implications for infection control measures and treatment. Currently, treatment options for patients with viral

The burden of pneumonia, including that due to respiratory viruses, is markedly higher in the very young (<5 years) and older adults (≥50 years). Respiratory viruses substantially contribute to pneumonia in both adults and children, and when systematically tested for, are more commonly detected than bacteria in both adults and children. It is difficult to distinguish between viruses by clinical presentation, and the exact clinical implication of viral detections among patients with pneumonia depends on the pathogen detected; however, there is increasing evidence of their importance in pneumoni

INTRODUCTION: Viral pneumonia is a common cause of hospital admission among Danish children. However, it remains unknown how many admissions among Danish children may be ascribed to viral pneumonia overall.
METHODS: Based on data drawn from the National Patient Register and the Danish Microbiology Database, hospital admissions for viral pneumonia and asthma-like disease were investigated among Danish children and adolescents less than 18 years. Testing of admitted patients for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza virus was also considered.
RESULTS: A total of 5,218 admissions with

Viral pathogens are increasingly recognized as a cause of pneumonia, in immunocompetent patients and more commonly among immunocompromised. Viral pneumonia in adults could present as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), ranging from mild disease to severe disease requiring hospital admission and mechanical ventilation. Moreover, the role of viruses in hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia as causative agents or as co-pathogens and the effect of virus detection on clinical outcome are being investigated.More than 20 viruses have been linked to CAP. Clinical presentation

Viruses are a common and important cause of severe community-acquired pneumonia, and may lead to severe respiratory disease and admission to the intensive care unit. Influenza is the most common virus associated with severe viral pneumonia, although other important causes include respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, metapneumonia virus, and coronaviruses. Viral pneumonias tend to have a seasonal predilection and are often preceded by a typical viral prodrome. This article focuses on severe influenza pneumonia, including the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, and briefly discusses other causes of severe r

Imaging and clinical manifestations of viral pneumonia are protean and not reliably predictive of its origin. All patients with neutropenic fever and normal findings at chest radiography should undergo thin-section computed tomography to determine whether parenchyma abnormalities are present. Although the radiologic manifestations of viral pneumonia are nonspecific and difficult to differentiate from those of other infections, it is important to consider viral infection when confronted with a rapidly progressive pneumonia in patients with risk factors for infection. Although definitive diagnos

Viruses account for a substantial portion of respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia, in the elderly population. Presently, influenza virus A H3N2 and respiratory syncytial virus are the most commonly identified viral pathogens in older adults with viral pneumonia. As diagnostic tests such as reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction become more widely used, the relative importance of additional viruses (such as parainfluenza, rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, and human metapneumovirus) will likely increase. Influenza virus should be considered as a cause of pneumonia during the winter mon

Pneumonia severity index (PSI) is an important scoring system that can assess the severity of community acquired pneumonia and determine admission status. However, there is a lack of research on whether this scoring system can be applied to viral community acquired pneumonia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of PSI in viral community acquired pneumonia. This retrospective cohort study included 1,434 adult patients (aged ≥18 years) who were admitted to the emergency department of a university hospital during 2013-2015 because of community-acquired pneumonia. Viral infect

BACKGROUND: Viruses are increasingly recognized as major causes of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Few studies have investigated the clinical predictors of viral pneumonia, and the results have been inconsistent. In this study, the clinical predictors of viral pneumonia were investigated in terms of their utility as indicators for viral pneumonia in patients with CAP.
METHODS: Adult patients (≥ 18 years old) with CAP, tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for respiratory virus, at two teaching hospitals between October 2010 and May 2013, were identified retrospectively. Demographic an

In recent years, the complexity of viral infections has escalated, leading to a steady rise in the number of patients suffering from viral pneumonia. Both innate and adaptive immune cells play a crucial role in the development and clinical presentation of this condition. Viruses not only initiate the antiviral immune response within the human body but also provoke uncontrolled inflammatory reactions. Severe viral infections are often marked by a "cytokine storm," characterized by an excessive release of proinflammatory cytokines. This cytokine storm can lead to abnormalities in immune cells, p

There is growing global recognition of the importance of viruses as a cause of lower respiratory tract infections (LRIs) from widespread outbreaks such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, to seasonal viruses such as those caused by influenza and adenovirus. Worldwide, viruses are a common cause of respiratory infections and mortality due to LRIs. Advances in rapid virus detection have led to a greater understanding of their prevalence and importance as etiological agents of illness. With multiple epidemics and pandemics of viral pneumonia over the past several decades, there is an increasing need

Pneumonia is a ubiquitous disease caused by viral and bacterial infections, characterized by high levels of reactive oxygen species in inflamed areas. Therapeutic strategies targeting reactive oxygen species levels in pneumonia have limited success due to the intricate nature of lung tissues and lung inflammatory responses. Here we describe an inhalable, non-invasive therapeutic platform composed of engineered cerium-based tannic acid nanozymes bound to a self-assembling peptide. In vitro and in vivo studies show that the nanozyme is internalized mostly by activated macrophages and epithelial
