Generalized Poisson distribution: the property of mixture of Poisson and comparison with negative binomial distribution.

We prove that the generalized Poisson distribution GP(theta, eta) (eta > or = 0) is a mixture of Poisson distributions; this is a new property for a distribution which is the topic of the book by Consul (1989). Because we find that the fits to count data of the generalized Poisson and negative binomial distributions are often similar, to understand their differences, we compare the probability mass functions and skewnesses of the generalized Poisson and negative binomial distributions with the first two moments fixed. They have slight differences in many situations, but their zero-inflated dis

Spinned Poisson distribution with health management application.

Consider a data collection setup during a spread of an infectious disease. Examples include severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) or influenza A virus H3N2. The health management in such scenarios quickly removes the infected cases before the data collection is completed. The estimate of the incidence rate or the chance for anyone to be immune requires using a correct probability distribution. The usual Poisson distribution is inappropriate because of the impact of removing infected cases on the incidence rate as well as observing a new case. An appropriate new probability distribution is d

Radiation induced chromosome aberrations and the Poisson distribution.

Data on the distribution of dicentrics and acentrics observed when human lymphocytes are cultured for 48 h after irradiation by X-rays, gamma-rays, and neutrons are presented. Analysis shows that for dicentrics, the observed distribution for X-rays, gamma-rays, and fission neutrons may be described by Poisson statistics but for higher energy neutrons overdispersion is observed. The phenomenon of overdispersion is also observed for acentrics irrespective of the radiation used. The possibility that overdispersion results from the variations of dose in sensitive sites leads to the conclusion that

Distributed Quasi-Poisson regression algorithm for modeling multi-site count outcomes in distributed data networks.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies incorporating real-world data from multiple institutions facilitate study of rare outcomes or exposures and improve generalizability of results. Due to privacy concerns surrounding patient-level data sharing across institutions, methods for performing regression analyses distributively are desirable. Meta-analysis of institution-specific estimates is commonly used, but has been shown to produce biased estimates in certain settings. While distributed regression methods are increasingly available, methods for analyzing count outcomes are currently limited. Count

Non-Poisson distribution in time of small- and large-mode miniature end-plate potentials.

Minature end-plate potentials (MEPP's) were recorded from frog (Rana pipiens) sartorius muscle cells of 60--80 mum diam; MEPP frequency remained constant up to 3 h and was 100 times greater in 80-mum cells than in 6-mum cells. Rapid cooling or heating of preparations initiated or accentuated bursts of MEPP's. Records from cells under control conditions and from cells where the MEPP population had been reduced to the small mode showed many instances of small clusters of MEPP's occurring within 100-ms intervals, indicating quantal release interdependencies. Some small cells initially generated m

Comparing neuronal spike trains with inhomogeneous Poisson distribution: evaluation procedure and experimental application in cases of cyclic activity.

A procedure is proposed to compare single-unit spiking activity elicited in repetitive cycles with an inhomogeneous Poisson process (IPP). Each spike sequence in a cycle is discretized and represented as a point process on a circle. The interspike interval probability density predicted for an IPP is computed on the basis of the experimental firing probability density; differences from the experimental interval distribution are assessed. This procedure was applied to spike trains which were repetitively induced by opening-closing movements of the distal article of a lobster leg. As expected, th

Quantitating the multiplicity of infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 subtype C reveals a non-poisson distribution of transmitted variants.

Identifying the specific genetic characteristics of successfully transmitted variants may prove central to the development of effective vaccine and microbicide interventions. Although human immunodeficiency virus transmission is associated with a population bottleneck, the extent to which different factors influence the diversity of transmitted viruses is unclear. We estimate here the number of transmitted variants in 69 heterosexual men and women with primary subtype C infections. From 1,505 env sequences obtained using a single genome amplification approach we show that 78% of infections inv

Modeling spatially dependent count time series data using COM-poisson INGARCH Models.

Count time series frequently exhibit serial dependence and either overdispersion or underdispersion relative to the Poisson equidispersion assumption. When such counts are observed across multiple locations, spatial dependence often arises, resulting in complex spatio-temporal dependency structures that are not adequately accommodated by standard integer-valued generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (INGARCH) models. To address these challenges, this study proposes a spatial Conway-Maxwell-Poisson INGARCH (SP-COM-INGARCH) framework that jointly models temporal dependence, sp

Application of the Hyper-Poisson Generalized Linear Model for Analyzing Motor Vehicle Crashes.

The hyper-Poisson distribution can handle both over- and underdispersion, and its generalized linear model formulation allows the dispersion of the distribution to be observation-specific and dependent on model covariates. This study's objective is to examine the potential applicability of a newly proposed generalized linear model framework for the hyper-Poisson distribution in analyzing motor vehicle crash count data. The hyper-Poisson generalized linear model was first fitted to intersection crash data from Toronto, characterized by overdispersion, and then to crash data from railway-highway

A bivariate zero-inflated negative binomial model and its applications to biomedical settings.

The zero-inflated negative binomial distribution has been widely used for count data analyses in various biomedical settings due to its capacity of modeling excess zeros and overdispersion. When there are correlated count variables, a bivariate model is essential for understanding their full distributional features. Examples include measuring correlation of two genes in sparse single-cell RNA sequencing data and modeling dental caries count indices on two different tooth surface types. For these purposes, we develop a richly parametrized bivariate zero-inflated negative binomial model that has

AN EXACT GOODNESS-OF-FIT TEST BASED ON THE OCCUPANCY PROBLEMS TO STUDY ZERO-INFLATION AND ZERO-DEFLATION IN BIOLOGICAL DOSIMETRY DATA.

The goal in biological dosimetry is to estimate the dose of radiation that a suspected irradiated individual has received. For that, the analysis of aberrations (most commonly dicentric chromosome aberrations) in scored cells is performed and dose response calibration curves are built. In whole body irradiation (WBI) with X- and gamma-rays, the number of aberrations in samples is properly described by the Poisson distribution, although in partial body irradiation (PBI) the excess of zeros provided by the non-irradiated cells leads, for instance, to the Zero-Inflated Poisson distribution. What does the study of the spatial patterns of pathological lesions tell us about the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders?

Discrete pathological lesions, which include extracellular protein deposits, intracellular inclusions and changes in cell morphology, occur in the brain in the majority of neurodegenerative disorders. These lesions are not randomly distributed in the brain but exhibit a spatial pattern, that is, a departure from randomness towards regularity or clustering. The spatial pattern of a lesion may reflect pathological processes affecting particular neuroanatomical structures and, therefore, studies of spatial pattern may help to elucidate the pathogenesis of a lesion and of the disorders themselves.

Evaluation of the bias in using the time to the first event when the inter-event intervals have a Weibull distribution.

Currently the analysis of clinical trials for treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) relies on the assumption that the events are distributed according to a Poisson distribution. We contend that the occurrence of PAF events are clearly not Poisson and tend to occur in clusters. A candidate parametric model of the inter-event interval, the Weibull distribution, is presented. When the events are distributed according to a Poisson distribution, the time to the first event (TFE) has the same distribution as the inter-event intervals (IEI) due to the 'memoryless' property of the Poisson
