Hydrogenating Polyethylene Terephthalate into Degradable Polyesters.

The recycling and upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the most widely used polyester plastic globally, has attracted growing attention concerning its disposal as non-degradable waste in the natural environment. Transforming end-of-life PET into (bio)degradable polyester offers a novel approach to managing its waste. In this study, we introduce a simple process capable of converting waste PET into degradable polyester, polyethylene terephthalate-polyethylene-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (PET-PECHD), by partly hydrogenating the aromatic rings (x) into aliphatic ones (y). The polyester

A case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis in a worker exposed to terephthalic acid in the production of polyethylene terephthalate.

Occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis (OHP) is an interstitial lung disease caused by sensitization to an inhaled antigen. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is mainly used for disposable beverage bottles. A clinical case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) in a 66-year-old patient in the follow-up as a worker formerly exposed to asbestos is presented. At the first visit in 2012 a diagnosis of asbestosis and pleural plaques was formulated. In 2017 the high resolution computed tomography was performed demonstrating a slight progression of the pulmonary fibrosis, while physical examinations r

Solar Disinfection of Viruses in Polyethylene Terephthalate Bottles.

Solar disinfection (SODIS) of drinking water in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is a simple, efficient point-of-use technique for the inactivation of many bacterial pathogens. In contrast, the efficiency of SODIS against viruses is not well known. In this work, we studied the inactivation of bacteriophages (MS2 and ϕX174) and human viruses (echovirus 11 and adenovirus type 2) by SODIS. We conducted experiments in PET bottles exposed to (simulated) sunlight at different temperatures (15, 22, 26, and 40°C) and in water sources of diverse compositions and origins (India and Switzerland).

[A case of penile strangulation by polyethylene terephthalate bottle].

Penile strangulation is one of the emergent urologic disorders, because immediate release is the critical treatment to prevent penile necrosis, urethral injury, erectile disorder, and other unfavorable events. A 66- year-old man was transferred to the emergency room of our hospital for the penile swelling and pain, occurring by penile insertion to the beverage bottle for masturbation. The penis was completely relieved using an electric plaster cutter without any injury. The strangulation time was four hours and a half, and there were no complications. We recommend an electric plaster cutter as

Adsorption of Macrolide Antibiotics and a Metabolite onto Polyethylene Terephthalate and Polyethylene Microplastics in Aquatic Environments.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics are emerging pollutants widely found in aquatic environments, potentially causing environmental harm. MPs may act as carriers for antibiotics, affecting their environmental distribution. This study investigates the adsorption of four macrolide antibiotics and a metabolite onto two types of MPs: polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene (PE). Results revealed a linear isotherm adsorption model, with higher adsorption to PET than to PE (R2 > 0.936 for PE and R2 > 0.910 for PET). Hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding could be the main adsorption

Enhanced degradation of polyethylene terephthalate by a two-strain microbial consortium.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degradation is often limited by insufficient polymer depolymerization and the downstream conversion of hydrolysis products. In this study, Burkholderia cepacia ZY1 and Pseudomonas harudinis G1B were compared, and a two-strain consortium, YB2, was constructed at an optimal inoculation ratio of 4:5. ZY1 showed relatively stronger PET depolymerization-related activity, whereas G1B exhibited greater growth in bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET)- and mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET)-containing media and a trend toward faster BHET conversion. The hydrol

The Effect of Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanoplastics on Amyloid-β Peptide Fibrillation.

Exposure of organisms to nanoplastics (NPs) is inevitable given their global abundance and environmental persistence. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a common plastic used in a wide range of products, including clothing and food and beverage packaging. Recent studies suggest that NPs can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause potential neurotoxicity. It is widely known that aggregation of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides in the brain is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the impact of nanoplastics such as polystyrene (PS) on amyloid aggregation has been studied, the effe

Efficient Recovery and Fast Hydrolysis of Polyethylene Terephthalate by Dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene).

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a versatile, relatively low-cost thermoplastic polymer, but its nonbiodegradability and extensive use lead to significant accumulation and environmental risks. The main roadblocks of current plastic recycling technologies include low-quality recycled plastics and inefficient degradation under harsh conditions, which highlights the urgent need to develop efficient and sustainable recycling processes. Herein, for the first time, a strategy is developed using bio-based solvent dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) for efficient recycling of waste PET-to-polymer or mo

[Metals in recycled polyethylene terephthalate and discrimination method for its use].

Metals in recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were analyzed by ICP-MS following microwave digestion with nitric acid. Physically and superclean-like recycled PET contained both Ge and Sb, and sometimes contained Co, P or Si. In contrast, the chemically recycled PET contained only Ge or Sb, and some samples contained Co. The recycled PETs did not contain Pb or Cd. Ge and Sb were catalysts of the polymerization, and the other metals also originated from the PET resin as additives. It was concluded that there is no safety concern about metals in recycled PET. It became clear that the presen

[Improved test for the migration of antimony and germanium from polyethylene terephthalate].

A simple and rapid test has been developed to quantitatively measure the migration of antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products. The PET product was soaked in 4% acetic acid (2 mL/cm2) for 30 min at 60 degrees C and 95 degrees C. The test solution was analyzed by ICP-MS. Recoveries of spiked Sb (0.025 microg/mL) and Ge (0.05 microg/mL) were 101% and 100%, respectively, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.3% and 1.7%. In ten successive analyses, Sb and Ge in the 4% acetic acid solution were analyzed with RSDs of 1.7% and 2.2%. Sb and Ge were not s

Efficient biodegradation and upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate mediated by cell-factories.

The pervasive accumulation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste has emerged as a critical ecological crisis, which is mainly driven by its recalcitrance to natural degradation and widespread contamination of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In response to this challenge, microbial-mediated PET biodegradation has garnered significant scientific attentions as a sustainable remediation strategy, harnessing the enzymatic cascades of specialized microorganisms to depolymerize PET into bio-assimilable monomers such as terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG). In this review, we summa

Repurposing polyethylene terephthalate plastic waste to capture carbon dioxide.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a ubiquitous polymer with a lack of viable waste management solutions besides mechanical recycling, incineration, and landfilling. Herein, we demonstrate a chemical upcycling of PET waste into materials for CO2 capture via aminolysis. The aminolysis reaction products-a bis-aminoamide (BAETA) and oligomers-exhibit high CO2 capture capacity up to 3.4 moles per kilogram as a stand-alone organic solid material. BAETA shows strong chemisorption featuring high selectivity for CO2 capture from flue gas (5 to 20% CO2) and ambient air (~400 parts per million CO2) und

Advances and Insights in Electrocatalytic Upcycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate Plastic Wastes.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most commonly used polyester plastics; however, its still-low recycling rate results in large amounts of waste emissions that pose a great threat to the ecosystem and human health. Electrocatalysis provides an effective strategy to convert waste PET plastics into high-value-added chemicals under mild conditions, which can achieve enhanced recycling efficiency. Especially, when coupled with cathode reduction reactions such as hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrate reduction, etc., valuable chemicals can be concurrently produced at bo

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) biodegradation by Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus pulmonarius.

The essential properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), such as chemical inertness and durability that make it a suitable material for the packaging of mineral and soft drinks, have led to it becoming a major environmental pollutant and a threat to the planet. Ecologically friendly solutions such as bioremediation are now being advocated for by scientists. This paper, therefore, seeks to explore the potential capacity of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus pulmonarius in biodegrading PET plastic on two different substrates (soil and rice straw). The substrates were combined with 5% and 10%

Polyoxometalate-Based Zinc-Organic Network as a Dual-Site Acid Catalyst for the Conversion of Polyethylene Terephthalate Plastic to Terephthalic Acid.

Chemical depolymerization and recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) constitute a sustainable, resource-efficient, and environmentally beneficial approach, which requires the development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, polyoxometalate(POM)-based zinc-organic networks were synthesized as dual-site acid catalysts for the alcoholysis of PET into the value-added terephthalic acid (TPA) product, with formulas of [Zn2(μ2-Cl)(H2O)2(DTAB)3][PW12O40]·4H2O (1), [Zn2(DTAB)4][SiW12O40]·4H2O (2), and [Zn2(H2O)4(DTAB)2.5][HBW12O40]·8H2O (3) (DTAB = 1,4-di(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzene

Multicomponent Nanowire Aerogels With Tailored Adsorption Equilibrium for the Upcycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate.

Multicomponent nanowire aerogels (MNWAs) integrate 1D anisotropy with 3D porous frameworks, yet their synthesis remains challenging due to incompatible reduction kinetics and immiscibility of multicomponent systems. Herein, we develop a "confined topological transformation" strategy to directly fabricate MNWAs. We uncover the critical role of "confined interfacial bonding evolution competition mechanism" in governing noble metal interactions with Te templates during transformation. The MNWAs enable efficient value-added conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), demonstrating their practi

Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Monitoring of the Accumulation of Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanoplastics.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most produced plastic materials in the world. The emergence of microplastics and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) as a significant environmental contaminant has become a matter of increasing concern. While the toxicological effects of PET NPs have been widely researched, there is a lack of methodologies for studying their accumulation. The present study introduces a novel method to monitor the distribution of PET NPs in germinating wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds. This involves the functionalization of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs)

Polyethylene terephthalate tape augmentation as a solution in recurrent quadriceps tendon ruptures.

Quadriceps tendon rupture is a severe and demanding problem in knee surgery, especially when it is recurrent and when elderly patients are involved. It can have a devastating impact when it is a complication following knee arthroplasty. There are many procedures for dealing with this problem, but none of them offer reliable results. The most popular methods of treatment are traditional transosseous sutures and suture anchors, often in combination with semitendinosus augmentation. In cases of osteoporotic bone or hamstring insufficiency, these solutions are not appropriate. One way to manage qu

Arthroscopic Hip Capsule Closure Augmented With a Nonwoven Polyethylene Terephthalate Scaffolding.

The importance of hip capsule closure after arthroscopy has increasingly been shown to improve patient-reported outcomes and decrease the risk of revision surgery. Nevertheless, not all surgeons close the capsule, and not all closures heal appropriately. Reasons for lack of closure and or closure failure include deficient tissue quality and the procedure being technically demanding. The purpose of this technical note is to show an innovative capsule closure during hip arthroscopy via the use of a nonwoven polyethylene terephthalate augment that is secured to the native capsular tissue using a
