BACKGROUND: Postoperative bronchopleural fistula is one of the most life-threatening complications after anatomical pulmonary resection. Bronchopleural fistula may cause empyema and aspiration pneumonia with subsequent acute respiratory distress syndrome. Surgical interventions for bronchopleural fistula can prolong hospitalization and impair postoperative quality of life. Postoperative care requires minimally invasive endoscopic occlusion.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 7 patients who developed bronchopleural fistula among 689 patients who underwent segmentectomy or lobe

OBJECTIVE: Early-stage oral or oropharyngeal carcinomas are often treated with surgical resection. Resulting wounds that are too large for primary closure can be covered with skin grafts or patches made from various biomaterials. Recently, polyglycolic acid sheets have been used for this purpose.
METHODS: We treated six patients with large wounds resulting from the resection of oral or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma by grafting polyglycolic acid sheet patches. All patients were initially treated at the National Cancer Center East Hospital from March 2010 through July 2012. After mucosa

A knitted mesh of polyglycolic acid was used successfully in 59 critically ill patients to bridge abdominal wall defects and prevent evisceration after celiotomy. Polyglycolic acid knit mesh was used in 31 patients who had extraordinary visceral edema after resuscitation and the mesh was inserted to avoid excessive tension in the wound closure, 15 patients who had abdominal wall defects after adequate débridement for necrotizing fasciitis, and 13 patients who had losses of abdominal wall tissue caused by trauma or after resection of tumor. There were 14 hospital deaths among the seriously ill

The present investigation was performed to compare the healing of skin incisions following running subcuticular suture using the absorbable material polyglycolic acid (Dexon) (DSS), and our standard procedure using polyamid (Supramid) interrupted percutaneous suture (SPS). In unilateral incisions one half of the wound closure was performed with DSS and the other with SPS. In bilateral incisions one method of closure was used for each side. A total of 100 scars were compared, 50 of each method. Less inflammatory reaction, a broader scar but slightly better cosmetic result and no increase in hyp

PURPOSE: Thoracoscopic bullectomy is a common treatment modality for spontaneous pneumothorax but can result in a high frequency of postoperative recurrent pneumothorax in young patients. This retrospective study compared the recurrence rate of pneumothorax following conventional thoracoscopic bullectomy to that following bullectomy using a low-density polyglycolic acid mesh to cover the staple line.
METHODS: Group A comprised 237 patients who experienced 294 episodes of pneumothorax and underwent thoracoscopic bullectomy alone, and Group B comprised 130 patients who experienced 155 episodes

BACKGROUND: Frey syndrome is one of the important complications of parotid surgery. Placing a barrier between the parotid gland and the skin flap is considered to be effective for preventing this syndrome by blocking misdirected regeneration of nerve fibers. Neoveil is nonwoven polyglycolic acid (PGA) felt that is used as absorbable reinforcing material. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of this PGA felt as a barrier for preventing Frey syndrome.
METHODS: A total of 19 patients who underwent superficial parotidectomy from 2012 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Application of

BACKGROUND: Polyglycolic acid mesh (PAM) reinforcement of colonic anastomoses were evaluated.
METHODS: Twenty female albino rabbits were divided into two groups. Each rabbit underwent segmental colonic resection with single-layer anastomosis. In one group of rabbits, PAM of length equal to the circumference of the anastomosis was applied. Rabbits were sacrificed on postoperative day 10 and peritoneal adhesions, anastomosis burst pressure, and anastomosis histopathological characteristics were evaluated.
RESULTS: The average burst pressure for the control and PAM groups was 149±15.95 mmHgand

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be a consequence of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Intrathoracic sleeve migration (ITSM) is a factor contributing to its development. This study aimed to investigate whether the occurrence of ITSM can be prevented by applying a polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet around the His angle.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, 46 consecutive patients who underwent LSG were divided into two groups: Group A - our standard LSG in the first half (n = 23) and Group B - our standard LSG with PGA sheet covering the a

Gastrointestinal (GI) leakage, fistulae, and perforations can be serious and life threatening. There has been a paradigm shift in the management approach of these conditions, from surgical to conservative, including endoscopic management. Here, we report two cases of endoscopic closure of a GI fistula and perforation using polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheets with fibrin glue. The first case is of an anastomotic leak detected after subtotal gastrectomy with gastroduodenostomy. After failed application of endoclips, a PGA sheet was applied, and the fistula was successfully closed. The second case was

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report by means of objective methods on the effectiveness of a nerve reconstruction procedure using a bioresorbable tube in two patients. Our previous successes in regenerating canine peripheral nerves across long distances (80-mm gaps) using a bioabsorbable tube have led us to investigate the value of such a tube for the treatment of human patients with chronic nerve injuries.
METHODS: The device was made from a cylindrically woven polyglycolic acid tube filled with a collagen sponge. It was designed to be resorbed after nerve regeneration. Peripheral

Polyglycolic acid (PGA) meshes have successfully been used in the treatment of injured parenchymatous organs. In our study we investigated the value of PGA meshes for reinforcement of colon anastomoses in a rat model. In 75 Wistar rats the transverse colon was transected and reanastomosed in a single-layer technique. The anastomoses in half of the animals were performed with 6 stitches. In the other animals the anastomoses were performed with 4 stitches only and were therefore supposed to leak. In half of the animals of each group a PGA mesh was used to cover the anastomoses. Animals of each g

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether pressure-tight reinforcement of pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) using polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh and fibrin glue sealant can reduce the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF).
METHODS: The study population included 128 consecutive patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy between September 2006 and January 2010. Postoperative mortality and morbidity among 50 patients who underwent reinforcement of PJ anastomosis using PGA mesh and fibrin glue were compared with 78 patients (historical controls).
RESULTS: The 2 groups demonstrated no significant

Tissue and organ replacement have quickly outpaced available supply. Tissue bioengineering holds the promise for additional tissue availability. Various scaffolds are currently used, whereas polyglycolic acid (PGA), which is currently used in absorbable sutures and orthopedic pins, provides an excellent support for tissue development. Unfortunately, PGA can induce a local inflammatory response following implantation. Therefore, we investigated the molecular mechanism of inflammation in vitro and in vivo. Degraded PGA induced an acute peritonitis, characterized by neutrophil (PMN) infiltration

A custom-designed polyglycolic acid (PGA) bioabsorbable nerve conduit was used to reconstruct a 25-mm defect in the right inferior alveolar nerve. The initial nerve injury, following a dental extraction, resulted in loss of lower lip sensation and severe facial pain. Sixteen months after tooth extraction, with no improvement in symptomatology, the alveolar canal was enlarged in diameter by means of mandibular osteotomy to accommodate a 2-mm-diameter polyglycolic acid tube. The proximal end of the inferior alveolar nerve was sutured into the polyglycolic acid tube. The mental nerve was sutured
