The xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity of aqueous and organic extracts of 27 selected species belonging in five genera (Fallopia, Oxyria, Persicaria, Polygonum and Rumex) of the family Polygonaceae occurring in the Carpathian Basin were tested in vitro. From different plant parts (aerial parts, leaves, flowers, fruits and roots), a total of 196 extracts were prepared by subsequent extraction with methanol and hot H2O and solvent-solvent partition of the MeOH extract yielding n-hexane, chloroform and 50% MeOH subextracts. It was found that the chloroform subextracts and/or the remaining

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Taxonomic groups have often been recognized on the basis of geographic distinctions rather than accurately representing evolutionary relationships. This has been particularly true for temperate and tropical members from the same family. Polygonaceae exemplifies this problem, wherein the woody tropical genera were segregated from temperate members of the family and placed in the subfamily Polygonoideae as two tribes: Triplarideae and Coccolobeae. Modern phylogenetic studies, especially when inferred from many lines of evidence, can elucidate more probable hypotheses of rel

The methanol extract of ripe Rumex crispus L. fruits was evaluated for its antioxidant potential by assays for ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), DPPH-free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and the influence on lipid peroxidation in liposomes (LP). Considerable activity was observed in all test systems (FRAP: 9.9 mmol Fe(2+) /g; DPPH IC(50) : 3.7 μg/mL; LP IC(50) : 4.9 μg/mL), comparable to that of BHT (FRAP: 8.0 μg/mL; DPPH IC(50) : 19.4 μg/mL; LP IC(50) : 3.5 μg/mL), but lower than the activity of ascorbic acid, rutin and quercetin, used as positive control substances. Rumex is one of about 50 genera in the knotweed family, Polygonaceae. The genus comprises about 200 species with bisexual, or more commonly, unisexual flowers, with the species displaying monoecious, dioecious, synoecious (hermaphroditic) or polygamous reproductive systems. Some of the dioecious species have heteromorphic sex chromosomes, which is rare amongst angiosperms. We here present a plastid phylogeny of 67 species, representing all four subgenera. For this study, we used three chloroplast markers, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnL-F and dense taxon sampling to reconstruct the most comprehensive mo

Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) is an invasive plant whose ecological dominance in its invasive range may partly rely on allelopathic interactions mediated by root exudates and especially secondary metabolites of wide polarity range. To elucidate the chemical diversity of these exudates, a metabolomic strategy combining liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) was employed. After optimization of EcoRoot methodology with design of experiment (DoE), root exudates were sampled with 3 d

The chemical complexity of medicinal plants poses a significant challenge for metabolomic profiling and chemotaxonomic discrimination. In this study, we applied an integrated pipeline combining Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) platform with SIRIUS-based in silico annotation to systematically profile and compare the metabolomes of three medicinal Polygonaceae plants: Rheum palmatum, Polygonum cuspidatum, and Polygonum multiflorum. Beyond routine library matching, we implemented a data-mining strategy combining spectral networking and in silico structure annotation to e

Medicinal plants are being used as an alternative source of health management to cure various human ailments. The healing role is attributed to the hidden dynamic groups of various phytoconstituents, most of which have been recorded from plants and their derivatives. Nowadays, medicinal plants have gained more attention due to their pharmacological and industrial potential. Aromatic compounds are one of the dynamic groups of secondary metabolites (SM) naturally present in plants; and anthraquinones of this group are found to be attractive due to their high bioactivity and low toxicity. They ha

Hot water extracts of Rheum plamatum and Rheum dentatus (from China) showed molluscicidal activity against the snails Oncomelania hupensis, Biomphalaria glabrata and Bulinus globosus, which are vectors of Schistosoma japonicum, S. mansoni and S. haematobium, respectively. Activity was correlated with antraquinones which were identified by HPLC: rhein and chrysophanol-anthron were most active (> 50% dead snails after 2 days in a 0.03% solution). Molluscicidal activity was intermediate with Rheum-emodin and physcion and was not detectable with cinnamic acid or Aloe-emodin. The snail O. hupensis

A short total synthesis of natural isocarbostyril ruprechstyril (3-n-pentyl-6-methoxy-8-hydroxy-1(2H)-isoquinolinone) isolated from Ruprechtia tangarana is reported. 6,8-Dimethoxy-3-pentylisocoumarin obtained by condensation of 3,5-dimethoxyhomophthalic anhydride with hexanoyl chloride was smoothly converted to O-methylruprechstyril by refluxing with methanamide. Regioselective demethylation of the latter using anhydrous aluminium chloride in dichloromethane furnished the ruprechstyril. Complete demethylation to give (6-desmethoxyruprechstyril) was achieved using same reagent in ethanethiol.

Three metallophyte species, Persicaria capitata, P. puncata (Polygonaceae), Conyza cordata (Asteraceae) from mineral wastes in the Zambian copper-cobalt belt were studied. This study focused on the elemental distribution in the roots, stems and leaves, using a range of techniques: micro-PIXE, SEM-EDS synchrotron XFM and XAS. The species differed in their responses to growing on Co-Cu-enriched soils: Persicaria puncata is a Co hyperaccumulator (up to 1060 μg g-1 in leaves), while Persicaria capitata and Conyza cordata are Co-excluders. All three species are Cu-accumulators. The highest concentr

Persicaria maculosa (Polygonaceae) (known as lady's thumb) is an annual morphologically variable weed that is widely distributed in Chile. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antifeedant potential of methanolic (MeOH), ethanolic (EtOH), and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts from the aerial parts of this plant collected in the Valparaíso and Curicó provinces (Chile) and relate this activity to the antioxidant capacity and the presence of phenolic compounds in the extracts. A phenolic profile based on HPLC-ESI-MS/MS allowed the identification of 26 phenolic compounds, most of them glyc

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the complex inflorescence architecture and developmental morphology of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is crucial for crop yield. However, most published descriptions of early flower and inflorescence development in Polygonaceae are based on light microscopy and often documented by line drawings. In Fagopyrum and many other Polygonaceae, an important inflorescence module is the thyrse, in which the primary axis never terminates in a flower and lateral cymes (monochasia) produce successively developing flowers of several orders. Each flower of a cyme is enclo

Emodin, an active component contained in the root and rhizome of Rheum palmatum L. (Polygonaceae), was found to have an inhibitory effect on the pathogenicity of Trichomonas vaginalis in mice. Emodin delayed the development of subcutaneous abscesses due to infection of this parasite. Also, it cures the intravaginal infection of trichomonads through oral administration. In cell cultures, it reduced the cytotoxic effect of this parasite towards mammalian cells. This inhibition was markedly reversed by the coexistence of free radical scavengers, indicating the possible mediation of free radicals.

In the course of our pharmacological screening of Polygonaceae species occurring in the Carpathian Basin the extracts prepared from the roots of Rumex thyrsiflorus showed promising antiproliferative, xanthine oxidase inhibitory and antibacterial activities. The present work deals with the isolation of compounds from the root of the plant. After multistep separation process, four compounds were obtained from the n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate soluble fractions of the methanol extract of the root. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined as 1-palmitoylglycerol, β-sitoster
