The esophageal pouches of Chaetopleura angulata and Acanthochitona fascicularis were investigated using light and transmission electron microscopy. These pouches linked to the posterior region of the esophagus are known as sugar glands as they contain a fluid rich in polysaccharide digesting enzymes. They are the second largest glands in the digestive system of chitons, just after the digestive gland. In both species, the pouches contain a dense array of finger-shaped villi. The villi epithelium includes absorptive cells, basophilic secretory cells, mucus-secreting cells, and basal cells. Some

The examination of chitons (Polyplacophora) associated with sandy bioclastic sediments collected in the southwestern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Basin) revealed the presence of three previously undescribed species: Leptochiton elisabettaesp. nov., L. gaiaesp. nov., and Ischnochiton falkorisp. nov. The latter two species preserve dried soft parts, allowing preliminary anatomical observations, particularly of the girdle. In addition, the studied sediments yielded valves of rare and recently described taxa (Leptochiton antondhorni, L. salicensis and Ischnochiton sigwartae), enabling refinement of

The major lateral teeth of the chiton Acanthopleura echinata are composite structures composed of three distinct mineral zones: a posterior layer of magnetite; a thin band of lepidocrocite just anterior to this; and apatite throughout the core and anterior regions of the cusp. Biomineralization in these teeth is a matrix-mediated process, in which the minerals are deposited around fibers, with the different biominerals described as occupying architecturally discrete compartments. In this study, a range of scanning electron microscopes was utilized to undertake a detailed in situ investigation

Elemental composition and distribution in individual teeth of the whole radula of the chiton Cryptoplax striata were analyzed using energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Both the element deposited and its position within the tooth vary according to the stage of mineralization. The initial site of mineralization is the junction zone, the region between the tooth cusp and base. In this region, the first element to be deposited is iron, followed by phosphorus and then calcium. Iron deposition next commences in the tooth cusp cap, where it proceeds rapidly, being virtually complete within 12 tooth rows.

Chitons possess the most elaborate system of shell pores found in any hard-shelled invertebrate. Although chitons possess some anteriorly located sense organs, they lack true cephalization, as their major sensory systems are not concentrated in a distinct head region. Instead, the aesthete system within their shells forms a dense sensory network that overcomes the barrier of their hard dorsal armour. The basic arrangement of neural structures embedded within a solid, opaque matrix, has confounded understanding of the overall network. In this study, we use synchrotron X-ray μCT to visualise the

The molluscan phylum is the second specious animal group with its taxa feeding on a variety of food sources. This is enabled by the radula, a chitinous membrane with embedded teeth, one important autapomorphy. Between species, radulae can vary in their morphology, mechanical, and chemical properties. With regard to chemical composition, some taxa (Polyplacophora and Patellogastropoda) were studied extensively in the past decades, due to their specificity to incorporate high proportions of iron, calcium, and silicon. There is, however, a huge lack of knowledge about radular composition in other

BACKGROUND: The radula, a chitinous membrane with embedded teeth, is one important molluscan autapomorphy. In some taxa (Polyplacophora and Patellogastropoda) one tooth type (the dominant lateral tooth) was studied intensively in the last decades with regard to its mechanical properties, chemical and structural composition, and the relationship between these parameters. As the dominant lateral tooth is probably one of the best studied biological materials, it is surprising, that data on elements and mechanical properties of the other tooth types, present on a chiton radula, is lacking.

Solenogastres and Caudofoveata are vermiform, shell-less molluscs, with the mantle covered by calcareous scales or spines (sclerites) embedded in a cuticle secreted by the mantle epithelium. Molecular studies recover them as a single clade (Aplacophora), sister of Polyplacophora, and together, they form the sister group to all other molluscs. Within this phylogenetic framework, sclerites emerge as potentially informative characters for reconstructing early molluscan evolution. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying sclerite formation in Aplacophora remain poorly resolved. Previous work ha

Most molluscan taxa forage with their radula, a chitinous membrane with embedded teeth. The teeth are the actual interfaces between the animal and its ingesta and serve as load-transmitting regions. During foraging, these structures have to withstand high stresses without structural failure and without a high degree of wear. Mechanisms contributing to this failure- and wear-resistance were well studied in the heavily mineralized teeth of Polyplacophora and Patellogastropoda, but for the rather chitinous teeth of non-limpet snails, we are confronted with a large gap in data. The work presented

Chitons are herbivorous invertebrates that use rows of ultrahard magnetite-based teeth connected to a flexible belt (radula) to rasp away algal deposits growing on and within rocky outcrops along coastlines around the world. Each tooth is attached to the radula by an organic structure (stylus) that provides mechanical support during feeding. However, the underlying structures within the stylus, and their subsequent function within the chiton have yet to be investigated. Here, we investigate the macrostructural architecture, the regional material and elemental distribution and subsequent nano-m

Nature builds multiscale mineral structures with impressive mechanical properties through spatially and temporally orchestrated organic-mineral assembly. One example of regulated mineralization is found in hypermineralized and ultrahard magnetic teeth of chiton, which grind on rock to feed on algae. At early stages of tooth formation, iron oxide deposition is controlled using a chiton-specific radular teeth matrix protein 1 (RTMP1), which is transported into teeth through microvilli. RTMP1 spatially and temporally guides and enhances mineralization on chitinous fibers within the tooth, providi

The cusp epithelium is a specialized branch of the superior epithelium that surrounds the developing teeth of chitons and is responsible for delivering the elements required for the formation of biominerals within the major lateral teeth. These biominerals are deposited within specific regions of the tooth in sequence, making it possible to conduct a row by row examination of cell development in the cusp epithelium as the teeth progress from the unmineralized to the mineralized state. Cusp epithelium from the chiton Acanthopleura hirtosa was prepared using conventional chemical and microwave a

Many species of chiton are known to deposit magnetite (Fe3O4) within the cusps of their heavily mineralized and ultrahard radular teeth. Recently, much attention has been paid to the ultrastructural design and superior mechanical properties of these radular teeth, providing a promising model for the development of novel abrasion resistant materials. Here, we constructed de novo assembled transcripts from the radular tissue of C. stelleri that were used for transcriptome and proteome analysis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the top 20 most highly expressed transcripts in the non-minerali

The radula in a group of molluscan invertebrates, the chitons (Polyplacophora), is a ribbon-like apparatus used for feeding and which bears a series of distinctive mineralized teeth called the major lateral teeth. While some chiton species deposit only iron biominerals in these teeth, many others deposit both iron and calcium. In this study, the calcium biomineral in the teeth of one of the latter types of species, the Australian east-coast chiton, Chiton pelliserpentis, has been isolated and examined for the first time. Spectroscopic and crystallographic techniques have identified the biomine

Jaws of various kinds occur in virtually all groups of Mollusca, except for Polyplacophora and Bivalvia. Molluscan jaws are formed by the buccal epithelium and either constitute a single plate, a paired formation or a serial structure. Buccal ectodermal structures in gastropods are rather different. They can be nonrenewable or having final growth, like the hooks in Clione (Gastropoda, Gymnosomata). In this case, they are formed by a single cell. Conversely, they can be renewable during the entire life span and in this case they are formed by a set of cells, like the formation of the radula. Th

Spicules are mineral-based biocomposites skeletal structures that are widely distributed among phylogenetically distant groups of invertebrates (Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Echinodermata). Subepidermal spicules are formed under the ectodermal epithelium and are characterized for all groups except mollusks (Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Bivalvia), their spicules are located on the surface of the body. However, one group of mollusks (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) have unique subepidermal spicules that have never been detected above the ectodermal epithelium and similarly to those characterized fo
