Vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is an important plastic resin for construction, pipe and tubing, siding, and other uses. Exposures to vinyl chloride monomer during the early years of production resulted in an important sentinel health event: the recognition of an excess of a rare liver cancer, hepatic angiosarcoma, at facilities throughout the world. Several other syndromes, including acro-osteolysis, also have been associated with PVC, but less clearly with vinyl chloride. Extensive research ranging from large-scale epidemiologic studies to biomarker research into molecular mechanisms continues to p

A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel group study comparing polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride-free catheter materials.

PURPOSE: In this study we compared a polyvinyl chloride catheter with a new polyvinyl chloride-free catheter with the same hydrophilic coating, and determined whether patient perception of ease and comfort of clean intermittent catheterization was independent of the catheter material. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This investigation was designed as a randomized, double-blind, parallel group, multicenter study. Eligible patients were experienced users of clean intermittent catheterization with a polyvinyl chloride catheter for a minimum of 1 month before randomization. They were randomized to continu

Upcycling of polyvinyl chloride into polyalphaolefin lubricants.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic used ubiquitously in households and industry owing to its light weight, mechanical strength, durability, low cost and ultraviolet and fire resistance1,2. With a production volume of about 60 million tonnes annually2, post-consumer and post-industrial PVC waste pose marked environmental challenges, such as leaching chlorohydrocarbons and additives, which contaminate groundwater and soil1-4. To address the formidable challenge of recycling PVC and achieving carbon circularity, valorization into high-value products is essential to mitigate the associate

Polyvinyl chloride dermatitis not caused by phthalates.

Seven cases of contact dermatitis in children due to identification bracelets made of polyvinyl chloride plastic are reported. Patch tests with the bracelets were negative in the five cases tested. It is concluded that the reactions were irritant due to some unknown chemical in the bracelets. The most widely used plasticizers in PVC, phthalates, must have very low sensitizing properties, as only one positive patch test was found in 1532 patch tests with phthalate mix, performed as a joint study by the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group.

Liver fibrosis in asymptomatic polyvinyl chloride workers.

This study was designed to determine whether vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) exposure is associated with liver fibrosis. A total of 347 workers with occupational exposure to VCM were systemically examined using liver ultrasonography and routine liver function tests. Vinyl chloride monomer cumulative dose (ppm-month) was estimated by summing the products of air VCM concentration levels and months of employment. Liver fibrosis was defined in subjects with precirrhosis and cirrhosis of liver diagnosed using ultrasonography. Significantly increased risks of developing liver fibrosis were found in wor

Liver disease among polyvinyl chloride production workers.

A protocol for systematic testing of all employees of a chemical plant is presented. This factory manufactures polyvinyl chloride compounds and resins, ABS compounds and resins, and synthetic rubber. The results were reviewed, which led to the discovery of 2 additional cases of angiosarcoma and 11 cases of portal fibrosis. Two of the 11 cases were found to have developed in employees other than polyvinyl chloride production workers.

Toxicity of vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride as seen through epidemiologic observations.

In 1974, vinyl chloride (VC) was first reported in the scientific literature to induce angiosarcoma of the liver in animals and humans. Further research has now demonstrated the carcinogenicity of this agent to other organs. Target organs for VC now include the liver, brain, and lung, and probably the lymphohematopoietic system. The carcinogenic risk has been extended to jobs associated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exposure. This is evidenced by cases of liver angiosarcoma reported among individuals employed in or residing near PVC fabrication facilities and by epidemiologic study demonstrati

Urinary thiodiglycolic acid levels for vinyl chloride monomer-exposed polyvinyl chloride workers.

Thiodiglycolic acid (TdGA) is the major metabolite of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) detected in human urine. Although urinary TdGA has been reported to be associated with ambient VCM exposure, the relationship between urinary TdGA and a low level of air VCM is not clear. Questionnaires were administered to 16 polyvinyl chloride manufacturing workers to obtain a detailed history of occupation and lifestyle. For each worker, personal air monitoring for VCM was performed and a time-weighted average for VCM exposure was calculated. The urinary TdGA levels at the end of a work shift, and at the comm

Growth characteristics of selected fungi on polyvinyl chloride film.

The objective of this study was to determine if plasticized polyvinyl chloride film would support the growth of any of nine species of fungi. The film was suspended in distilled water with no nutrients or with glucose or ammonium sulfate. Spores of each of the test species were inoculated into the suspension medium, and the mixture was incubated at 30 degrees C for up to 18 weeks. Most species were found to be capable of utilizing the film for carbon or nitrogen when the other nutrient was supplied. Only two species, Aspergillus fischeri and Paecilomyces sp., were found to be capable of utiliz

Bis-Pyrene-Appended Polyvinyl Chloride: Mechanosynthesis and Nitro-Explosive Detection.

The remote detection of nitro compounds typically requires complex analytical procedures and expensive instrumentation, often resulting in prolonged analysis times. Fluorescence-based methods, which exploit the quenching of organic fluorophores in the presence of nitro analytes, offer a more practical and efficient alternative. Particularly promising is the use of excimer emission generated by bis-pyrene species (bis-Pyr), formed either through supramolecular interactions or covalent linkages. Regarding the latter, the integration of covalently linked bis-Pyr sensors onto polymer backbones, su

Polyvinyl Chloride-Derived Organosulfur Cathodes for Durable Li-S Battery.

The properties of sulfur host materials are critical for mitigating the lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle effect and prolonging the Li-S battery lifetime. Herein, we have developed a unique polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-derived polymeric host material (named as XC); results show that XC host is capable of achieving strong chemical/physical confinement to the encapsulated sulfur and lithium polysulfide (LiPS) intermediates, thus significantly reducing the shuttling effect and improving the battery cycle life to above 500 cycles with only 9.3% capacity loss (74.4% after 1000 cycles).
