OBJECTIVES: As a predominantly arboreal animal in the wild, the terrestrial positional behavior of Pongo pygmaeus is poorly understood, having been studied almost exclusively in captive settings. This study uses camera-trap footage to provide the first assessment of wild orangutan terrestrial locomotor and postural behavior on natural substrates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Video footage of orangutans from motion-activated cameras in the Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia was collected over a five-year period. The resulting 100 instances of orangutan terrestriality were analyz

Cardiac diseases in great apes are frequently diagnosed late in their life or at postmortem. Echocardiography allows early detection and diagnosis of heart diseases in great apes. Between January 2018 and October 2019, Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) conducted health evaluations on 22 captive orangutans, including 10 Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), eight Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii), and four hybrid orangutans (Pongo spp.). Fourteen male and eight female orangutans were evaluated. Cardiac assessment was conducted in partnership with the Great Ape Heart Project (GAHP). Subjects were anes

BACKGROUND: A 38-year-old male Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) developed progressive hind leg paresis. A computed tomography scan of the vertebral column revealed soft tissue type densities within vertebral bones.
METHODS AND RESULTS: At necropsy infiltrating tumor masses were found in the vertebral bodies, protruding into the spinal canal and compressing the spinal cord. Microscopically neoplastic plasma cells infiltrated the vertebral bodies and adjacent soft tissues. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells tested positive for B cell markers (CD38, CD79alpha), kappa, and lambda light

The primary objective of this project was to study the life cycle and ecology of Plasmodium pitheci, a malaria parasite of the orang-utan. The field work was based on the orang-utan rehabilitation centre in the Sepilok Forest Reserve of eastern Sabah. Two visits were made to Sepilok, the first in February and March, 1972, and the second (by W.P.) in January 1974. On the first visit two species of "surrogate host" were taken to Sabah, i.e. chimpanzees and Aotus monkeys for experimental work. The arboreal habitat of the orang-utan in the dipterocarp forests of eastern Sabah is described. In the

A 9-yr-old female Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) presented with a 48-hr history of depression, lethargy, anorexia, and mucoid discharge from the rectum. Clinical, radiographic, and ultrasonographic examination demonstrated the presence of multiple distended loops of intestine, intestinal adhesions, and free gas within the abdomen. During exploratory laparotomy, fibrinopurulent diffuse peritonitis as a result of a ruptured intrapelvic abscess with associated large bowel adhesions was evident. The abdomen was thoroughly lavaged, necrotic debris and abscess wall removed, and fibrinou

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in humans is most commonly caused by disruption of thyroid gland development (dysgenesis) or an inherited defect in thyroid hormone biosynthesis (dyshormonogenesis). CH has not been previously documented in great apes. This report describes the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of CH in a 9-mo-old male Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and a 6-wk-old female Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). Primary CH due to thyroid dysgenesis was confirmed in the Bornean orangutan using sonography and radioisotope scintigraphy. Although commercial thyroid immunoa

A 48-year-old, multiparous, female hybrid orang-utan (Pongo abelii/pygmaeus) was investigated after a 3-year history of irregular and excessively heavy menstrual bleeding. Opportunistic pelvic examinations over a 2.5-year period were non-diagnostic. Medical therapy was not effective. A subtotal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-ovariectomy was performed. A pedunculated mass spanning 90% of the uterine lumen was seen grossly, and histopathology confirmed uterine adenomyosis. Adenomyosis is defined as the ectopic occurrence or diffuse implantation of endometrial tissue, including glands and s

Baseline data on health of free-ranging wildlife is essential to evaluate impacts of habitat transformation and wildlife translocation, rehabilitation, and reintroduction programs. Health information on many species, especially great apes, is extremely limited. Between 1996 and 1998, 84 free-ranging orangutans captured for translocation, underwent a complete health evaluation. Analogous data were gathered from 60 semi-captive orangutans in Malaysia. Baseline hematology and serology; vitamin, mineral and pesticide levels; and results of health evaluations, including physical examination, provid

BACKGROUND: Some wild animals have been recognized as potential reservoirs of Leishmania infantum infection (e.g. carnivores, lagomorphs, rodents, etc.). Leishmania infantum was also identified infecting humans and lagomorphs (i.e. hares and rabbits) over the period of 2009-2016, with the latter acting as the main reservoirs involved in the human leishmaniosis outbreak in Madrid.
RESULTS: Two cases of clinical leishmaniosis are reported in orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) housed at two different centres in Madrid. The first is the case of a 36-year-old male orangutan with severe weight lo

A serological survey of confiscated orangutans was conducted to determine the prevalence of specific viral infections cross reacting with human viruses. Antibodies specific for human hepatitis A (HAV) and B (HBV) viruses, herpes simplex viruses (HSV), and human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV types I and II), as well as for the simian type D retroviruses (SRV types 1 to 3) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) were tested in samples from 143 orangutans. Results revealed a high prevalence of potential pathogens. The most prevalent viral infection found was HBV (59.4% prevalence) of which 89.4% of

An 18-yr-old female orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) developed opisthotonus after sustaining conspecific bite wounds 3 wk earlier. The orangutan developed progressive tetraparesis and dysphagia, despite normal mentation, suggestive of tetanus. A tetanus vaccine had been administered at 2 yr of age, but none since. Brain magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, cerebral spinal fluid tap, and bloodwork were unremarkable. Viral, Baylisascaris, and tetanus toxin testing were negative. A femoral central venous catheter (CVC) was placed to provide medications, fluids, and parenteral nutri

Naturally acquired immunity to the different types of malaria in humans occurs in areas of endemic transmission and results in asymptomatic infection of peripheral blood. The current study examined the possibility of naturally acquired immunity in Bornean orangutans, Pongo pygmaeus, exposed to endemic Plasmodium pitheci malaria. A total of 2140 peripheral blood samples were collected between January 2017 and December 2022 from a cohort of 135 orangutans housed at a natural forested Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Each individual was observed for an average of 4.

A 34-year-old female orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) developed renal failure and became uremic. At necropsy, large gastric masses were present around the cardia and in the corpus. Abdominal metastases occurred in the liver, pancreas, and right ovary. Light microscopic examination of the tumor revealed polygonal cells with vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. The growth pattern was predominantly solid. Focal areas contained excentric cytoplasmic intermediate filament inclusions, as identified by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Immunohistochemical procedures demonstrated mainly the

Environmental enrichment provides captive orangutans with opportunities to express species-typical behaviors. One behavior seen in captive orangutans is covering with flexible materials, but its function is not well understood. This study provides a quantitative description of covering behavior in a captive Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). Behavioral observations were used 5-min scan sampling with continuous recording of material-related bouts across eight sessions. Covering behavior was observed using cloth and natural vegetation, indicating flexibility in use. Covering behavior was not si

Systemic amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis is an infrequent disease in which amyloid fibrils derived from the immunoglobulin light chain are deposited in systemic organs, resulting in functional impairment. This disease has been notably uncommon in animals, and nonhuman primates have not been reported to develop it. In this study, we identified the systemic AL kappa chain amyloidosis in a captive Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and analyzed its pathogenesis. Amyloid deposits were found severely in the submucosa of the large intestine, lung, mandibular lymph nodes, and mediastinal lymph n

A female Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) raised in a zoo died at 60 years of age. The animal showed no clinical signs besides decreased gait speed. Pathological examination revealed small hemorrhagic foci in the cerebral cortex and liver fibrosis with fatty degeneration of the hepatocytes. To evaluate aging lesions, the brain was examined histologically and immunohistochemically. Severe amyloid β (Aβ) deposition was observed in the cerebral cortex and vascular walls. Parenchymal Aβ deposits in the cerebral cortex appeared as diffuse plaques. Loss of smooth muscle was observed in the vascula
