Ruptured popliteal artery aneurysm.

Popliteal artery aneurysms rarely rupture. We treated a 91-year-old man who presented with a deep venous thrombosis and anemia; rupture of a popliteal artery aneurysm was suspected only after compartment syndrome isolated to the thigh developed as the result of bleeding. Although fasciotomy was required on the basis of the clinical examination alone, the cause of the problem, operative strategy, and definitive treatment (i.e., resection and bypass) were clarified by the preoperative computed tomography scan. Ruptured popliteal aneurysm can manifest as a massively swollen leg with anemia and sh

Ruptured popliteal artery aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) are generally complicated by thrombosis and distal embolization, whereas rupture is rare. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and outcome in a cohort of patients who had surgery for ruptured PAA (rPAA). METHODS: Operations for rPAA were identified from the Swedish Vascular Registry, Swedvasc, 1987-2012. Medical records and imaging were reviewed. Comparison was made with patients treated for PAA without rupture. RESULTS: Forty-five patients with rPAA were identified. The proportion with rupture among those operated o

Popliteal artery aneurysms and popliteal phymas.

For the differential diagnosis of popliteal phymas, popliteal artery aneurysms are evaluated. They are frequent among peripheral aneurysms. However, diagnosis is difficult in some patients because clinical symptoms vary. We report 2 patients who consulted our hospital for popliteal phymas. In these patients, surgery was performed via a posterior approach. In 1 patient, reconstruction was conducted using a great saphenous vein graft (SVG). Even when employing the posterior approach, SVG collection and reconstruction are possible without changing the posture for short-distance reconstruction. Th

Popliteal vein compression due to popliteal artery aneurysm: effects of aneurysm size.

Unlike the venous compression associated with larger popliteal artery aneurysms, which frequently is associated with deep vein thrombosis, the venous compression caused by the moderate sized (greater than 2 cm and less than 3 cm) aneurysms in the reported cases is not associated with thrombosis. The extrinsic compressive effect of these moderate sized popliteal artery aneurysms on the adjacent vein is shown to vary with the patient's leg position. Three of the four patients with unilateral leg swelling discussed here had bilateral popliteal artery aneurysms. In these cases, the contralateral l

Popliteal artery aneurysms.

Altogether 59 patients with 76 popliteal artery aneurysms were treated during the last 36 years. There were 50 (85%) male and 9 (15%) female patients with an average age of 61 years. Nineteen (32%) patients had bilateral aneurysms. The clinical manifestations of the aneurysms included ruptures 4 (5.3%); deep venous thrombosis 4 (5.3%); sciatic nerve compression 1 (1.3%); leg ischemia 52 (68.4%), and asymptomatic pulsatile masses 15 (19.7%). Seventy (92%) aneurysms were atherosclerotic, one (1.3%) mycotic, and four (5.3%) traumatic; one (1.3%) developed owing to fibromuscular displasia. Seven (

Aneurysms of the popliteal artery.

Thirty-one aneurysms of the popliteal artery in 23 patients have been studied. Twenty-nine aneurysms were secondary to atherosclerosis, while one was secondary to trauma and one was associated with a coagulopathy. The lesions were bilateral in eight patients and were associated with extra-popliteal aneurysms in ten patients; the abdominal aorta was the most frequent extrapopliteal site. All except two of the 23 patients were over 50 years of age, and many exhibited atherosclerosis and related symptoms in other vessels. Ischemic rest pain was the most common presenting symptom in patients with

Aneurysms: popliteal and visceral artery aneurysms.

Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) occur in approximately 1 of every 100 men ages 65 to 80 years. They can occur bilaterally, and abdominal aortic aneurysm is simultaneously present in 50% of cases. Therefore, patients with PAAs should undergo ultrasonography to exclude abdominal aortic aneurysms and contralateral PAAs. The main risk of PAAs is thrombus/embolus formation causing lower limb ischemia. Any symptomatic PAA or PAA containing a thrombus should be repaired regardless of size. Asymptomatic PAAs should be considered for repair if the diameter is 2 cm or greater. Visceral artery aneurysm

Angiosarcoma masquerading as popliteal artery aneurysm.

Background: This research was carried out to identify relevant steps to diagnosis and possible treatment regimens regarding angiosarcomas of the popliteal artery associated with true popliteal aneurysms, as they are very rare. Materials and methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in accordance with the Prisma Guidelines. Only publications regarding true popliteal aneurysms in association with true angiosarcomas were taken into account. Furthermore, three well-documented not yet published cases are depicted. Results: 13 case reports could be identified. Besides two initially diagn

Comparison of popliteal artery aneurysm therapies.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical treatment of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) has advanced over time. Constant development of new endovascular techniques has converted these into the most attractive methods available today. However, results for each endovascular procedure are still limited, and available data have emerged from studies examining only a small number of cases. The present retrospective review was designed to examine early and late results for PAA treatment and to identify possible factors associated with graft patency. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all PAAs treated from Janua

Popliteal artery aneurysm with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is a rare anatomical anomaly that may rarely lead to secondary popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA). We present a case in which chronic extrinsic compression culminated in a giant PAA, highlighting the diagnostic workflow and surgical strategy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of exercise-induced pain and numbness in the right lower limb. On examination, popliteal and distal pulses were absent. Duplex ultrasound showed a 4.1 cm saccular popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) containing a 15 mm mural thrombus; CT a

[Popliteal artery aneurysm: surgical and endovascular therapy].

Aneurysms of the popliteal artery are the most common form of peripheral aneurysm with an incidence of 70-80 %. An enlargement of the popliteal artery of more than 50% of the original diameter is defined as a popliteal artery aneurysm and is found mainly in male patients older than 65 years of age. The incidence is 1%, in 50% of cases is bilateral and in up to 50% in association with other large vessel aneurysms (e.g. abdominal aorta). Differential diagnoses are Baker's cyst, cystic adventitial disease, entrapment syndrome and epitheloid hemangioma. One third of all diagnosed popliteal artery

Outcomes of Popliteal Stent-Graft Placement at the Artery Hinge Point for Popliteal Artery Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: To assess whether stent-grafts crossing the hinge point (HP) in the popliteal artery are associated with increased complications and decreased patency rates, after endovascular treatment of the popliteal artery aneurysm. METHODS: This was a single-center, case-control study. Patients were allocated to either the HP group (subjects with stent-grafts crossing the HP) or the control group (subjects with stent-grafts above and/or below the HP) based on stent-graft location in the femoropopliteal artery. HP was defined as the main curve in the popliteal artery in the most acute angle t

Popliteal artery aneurysm ultrasound criteria for reporting characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Duplex ultrasound (DUS) is the modality of choice for surveillance of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs). However, noninvasive vascular laboratories have no standard guidelines for reporting results. This study assessed reports of PAA DUS for inclusion of information pertinent to operative decision-making and timing of surveillance. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of a multi-institutional repository that was queried for all patients with a PAA from 2008 to 2022 and confirmed via manual chart review. DUS reports were abstracted and images were individually annotated

Endovascular Treatment of Chronic Occluded Popliteal Artery Aneurysm.

Critical limb ischemia may be the consequence of chronic occlusion of an aneurysm of popliteal artery. Endovascular repairs have the potential to be less invasive than open surgery and to allow the treatment, during the same procedure, of occlusive infrapopliteal diseases achieving a better distal outflow. Eleven patients with occluded popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) underwent an endovascular repair of PAA using a new technique, by positioning of a Viabahn graft inside a bare nitinol stent, deployed at the level of aneurysm with the intent to avoid distal embolization and to assure an external

Endovascular management of ruptured infected popliteal artery aneurysm.

Infected popliteal aneurysm is a rare high-risk condition that can present as an emergency with acute rupture and sepsis. Management of acute ischemia in the presence of local and systemic sepsis is challenging. Open surgery is not always possible and carries a high risk of morbidity and death. An endovascular approach has been advocated in infected aneurysms elsewhere in the body, with good short-term and medium-term outcomes encouraging such approach in the popliteal artery. We report a case of successful endovascular treatment of an infected ruptured popliteal aneurysm with favorable outcom
