Interspecific Aggressions between Crested Porcupines and Roe Deer.

Despite being common amongst carnivore mammals, behavioral interference between wild herbivore species is poorly documented. Particularly, in temperate areas, where the ungulate guild is composed of a few species, and large-sized rodents are scarce, most cases of interspecific interactions involve at least one alien species. In this work, we report the first data on behavioral interactions between roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, and crested porcupine, Hystrix cristata. Aggressions by crested porcupines toward roe deer were observed in 34 out of 202 observations of both species feeding at the sa

Trophoblast-like cells in the tissues of porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum).

During development and subsequent field evaluation of an oral vaccinia-rabies glycoprotein (V-RG) recombinant virus vaccine, 53 adult porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum; 38 females and 15 males) were examined. Microscopic examinations revealed the presence of giant epitheloid cells in various tissues (adrenal glands, spleen, liver, and lungs) of 4 (11%) female animals. These giant cells were approximately 20 times the size of the surrounding cells of the parenchyma. The cells were found singly and were not associated with any inflammatory cellular infiltrate and appeared to be located within vascu

Emergence of Group B Streptococcus Disease in Pigs and Porcupines, Italy.

We describe group B Streptococcus linked to disease in farmed pigs and wild porcupines in Italy. Occurrence in pigs was attributed to transmission from nonpasteurized bovine milk whey. Antimicrobial-resistance profiles in isolates from porcupines suggest no common source of infection. Our findings expand the known host range for group B Streptococcus disease.

Porcupine inhibition enhances hypertrophic cartilage differentiation.

Porcupine (PORCN) is a membrane-bound protein of the endoplasmic reticulum, which modifies Wnt proteins by adding palmitoleic acid. This modification is essential for Wnt ligand secretion. Patients with mutated PORCN display various skeletal abnormalities likely stemming from disrupted Wnt signaling pathways during the chondrocyte differentiation. To uncover the mechanism of PORCN action during chondrogenesis, we used 2 different PORCN inhibitors, C59 and LGK974, in several model systems, including micromasses, 3D cell cultures, long bone tissue cultures, and zebrafish animal model. PORCN inhi

SARCOPTIC MANGE IN FREE-RANGING NORTH AMERICAN PORCUPINES (ERETHIZON DORSATUM) IN NEW YORK STATE.

Sarcoptic mange causes pruritic and crusting dermatitis in a large number of mammalian species with varying population impacts. Between 2016 and 2022, 15 North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) were diagnosed with sarcoptic mange at Cornell University's Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital in Ithaca, New York. Disease severity varied among individuals but all shared a similar unique presentation with thick, pale tan to yellow crusts limited in distribution to the ventral, nonquilled areas of the body, including the ventral abdomen and thorax, distal limbs, and face. The thick, hard nature

Toxoplasma gondii in an African crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata).

An adult female crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) was evaluated for acute onset of neurologic signs including head tilt, circling, and ataxia. She was found dead in her holding area 2 days after initially exhibiting clinical signs. Necropsy was unremarkable. Histopathology of brain tissue revealed the presence of protozoal cysts associated with inflammation as the underlying cause of clinical signs and death. Immunohistochemical staining of brain tissue for Toxoplasma gondii was strongly positive. PCR on fresh brain confirmed T. gondii as the causative organism. An adult male in the same en

DETECTION OF SKUNK ADENOVIRUS 1 IN TWO NORTH AMERICAN PORCUPINES (ERETHIZON DORSATUM) WITH RESPIRATORY DISEASE.

Adenoviruses have been reported to affect a broad range of host species, tend to be species specific, and often affect the respiratory system. This report describes the isolation of an adenovirus from deep nasal swabs of two wild North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) with respiratory diseases that presented to a wildlife hospital. Partial sequences of the deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase gene of the isolated virus were identical to skunk adenovirus (SkAdV-1), also known as pygmy marmoset adenovirus. Both porcupines survived and were released back to the wild after successful medical t

Histological and Immunohistochemical Investigation of the Cerebellum in Porcupine and Guinea Pig.

The present study was designed to investigate the cerebellum histology and immunohistochemistry in porcupine (Hystrix cristata) and guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). Two adult porcupines and two adult guinea pigs were used. For general histology, crystal violet and Luxol fast blue stains were applied. For immunohistochemistry, myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), neurofilament 200 (NF200), calbindin D-28K, and glial fibrillary-associated protein (GFAP) were investigated. The cerebellar cortex in both species was composed of three cellular layers: molecular, granular, and Purkinje cell (PC) layers

Porcupine Quill Migration Into the Temporomandibular Joint Causing Trismus in a Dog.

Porcupine quill injuries have been reported in the veterinary literature as the source of a wide range of complications affecting separate body regions and organ systems, particularly in dogs from specific geographic locations. However, migration of porcupine quills involving the temporomandibular joint and its clinical consequences have not been previously reported. This report describes the first documented case of a dog presenting with trismus and a draining tract in the area of the left zygomatic arch several weeks following a porcupine encounter. The dog was referred as a consequence of t

Anatomical and histological study of the penis of the Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica).

Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are one reproductive strategy to support conservation efforts for species with decreasing populations. To develop these techniques, the variation of reproductive traits among animals must be considered for successful implementation. In artificial insemination (AI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), semen collection using penile vibratory stimulation requires basic anatomical data of the penis. In the Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica), however, there is no such information. Therefore, in this study, anatomical and histological examinations of the penis o

Porcupine inhibition is a promising pharmacological treatment for severe sclerosteosis pathologies.

Sclerosteosis, an ultra-rare disorder characterised by high bone mass (HBM) and skeletal overgrowth, leads to facial paralysis, hearing loss and raised intracranial pressure, which is currently managed only through high-risk surgery. Sclerosteosis is caused by SOST mutations and loss of functional sclerostin, a protein that suppresses osteogenesis by antagonising Wnt/β-catenin signalling. Herein, using in vitro and in vivo approaches, we explore whether LGK974, another potent Wnt inhibitor that targets porcupine (PORCN, Wnt-specific acyltransferase), is a promising sclerosteosis therapeutic. Precise regulation of porcupine activity is required for physiological Wnt signaling.

Gradients of diverse Wnt proteins regulate development, renewal, and differentiation. Porcupine (PORCN) is a membrane-bound O-acyltransferase that is required for post-translational modification of all Wnts to enable their transport, secretion, and activity. Mutations in PORCN are associated with focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH), whereas gene deletion causes embryonic lethality in mice. To study the protein in more detail, zinc finger nucleases were used to edit the PORCN genomic locus, establishing two HT1080 fibrosarcoma clones null for PORCN activity that facilitate the study of PORCN structur

Ocular and orbital porcupine quills in the dog: a review and case series.

A retrospective evaluation of 5 cases of orbital or intraocular porcupine quills in the dog and a literature review from MEDLINE (1983-1995) is presented. This paper reviews the diagnosis, therapy, and visual prognosis of ocular and orbital quills in the dog. Distinguishing penetration and perforation of the eye and intraocular structures is paramount in establishing a visual prognosis and appropriate therapy. Perforation of the cornea or sclera, lens, or the uvea and retina necessitates prompt specialized surgical therapy to save vision. The diagnosis of orbital quills can be readily confirme

Porcupine-Quill-Inspired Shape-Morphing Biointerfaces Disassemble Biofilms.

Mature biofilms are difficult to eradicate because the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix shields embedded bacteria from chemical and mechanical attack. Here, we report a porcupine-spine-inspired photo-responsive dynamic offensive bio-interface that dismantles mature biofilms through electrically actuated mechanical penetration and light-driven oxidative stress. A high-aspect-ratio nano-dagger array undergoes reversible nanoscale deformation (∼110 nm) under an alternating electric field, while a photo-responsive heterostructure generates a surface photovoltage (∼364 mV) that enhanc
