Sponges are known to possess remarkable reconstitutive and regenerative abilities ranging from common wounding or body part regeneration to more impressive re-building of a functional body from dissociated cells. Among the four sponge classes, Homoscleromorpha is notably the only sponge group to possess morphologically distinct basement membrane and specialized cell-junctions, and is therefore considered to possess true epithelia. The consequence of this peculiar organization is the predominance of epithelial morphogenesis during ontogenesis of these sponges. In this work we reveal the underly

Psoriasis is a chronic, auto-inflammatory disease affecting millions of individuals worldwide. In addition to classic cutaneous manifestations, the condition is linked to significant co-morbidities including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, and psychiatric disease. Therefore, more aggressive treatment and multi-disciplinary care is critical. Measures of disease burden (quantified by anatomic location, body surface area (BSA) of involvement, and impact on daily life) assist in determining the severity of disease and have been integral in objecti

Previous ecological studies show higher sponge diversity in the Spermonde Archipelago, SW Sulawesi, Indonesia, compared to the World Porifera Database. This study aims to provide an updated checklist of sponges of the Spermonde Archipelago, focusing particularly on the littoral area. Systematic sampling was executed through several observations, with roving techniques, e.g., snorkeling and SCUBA diving. In situ photographs of living sponges were taken using an underwater digital camera. Some specimens were collected and stored at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden. Fragments of samples

Manzamine alkaloids are a structurally diverse class of marine-derived alkaloids that have attracted considerable interest because of their complex polycyclic architectures, diverse biological activities, and distinctive biosynthetic features. The Indonesian marine sponge Acanthostrongylophora ingens is a particularly rich source of these alkaloids, providing an opportunity to further explore their chemical diversity, biosynthetic relationships, and biological properties. Detailed analyses of LC-HR-ESI-MS/MS and molecular networking were performed on EtOAc layers obtained from H2O/EtOAc partit

Demosponge classification is notoriously challenged by the paucity of informative morphological characters with sufficient complexity to discriminate between apomorphies and convergences. Molecular data, preferably from type material, helps shed light on phylogenetic relationships. In the following, we review, based on the results of DNA barcoding of type (and other) material, the classification of several demosponge species and genera with either eminent or previously uncertain classification. We report that the aster-bearing genus Leptosastra Topsent, 1904, is a poecilosclerid, unlike Clathr

Amorphinopsis atlantica (Halichondriidae) is the only known species of its genus in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a brittle, massive sponge with variable projections and coloration ranging from yellow to dark green, characterized by oxeas and accessory styles. Originally described from Brazil's southwestern coast, it has since been reported in several Caribbean sites, typically inhabiting submerged mangrove stilt-roots in coastal lagoons. Although shallow-water sponges in the Colombian Caribbean have been studied, this conspicuous species had not been previously documented in lagoonal systems of t

In the present study, we describe a new species belonging to the genus Chalinula from Ilha Grande Bay, Rio de Janeiro state, off Southeast Brazil. Chalinula tamoiensis sp. nov. is thinly to thickly encrusting, purple or pink coloured in life, with oscules raised in volcano shaped projections or more commonly flush with the surface, in thinly encrusting specimens. Skeleton typically anisotropic, with variable amounts of spongin and oxeas ranging from 59 to 90 m long. Maximum likelihood analyses of large ribosomal subunit DNA (28S rRNA) recovered Chalinula polyphyletic. Chalinula tamoiensis sp.

The genus Biemna currently includes fifty-eight valid species distributed worldwide with a wide depth range. In this paper, we describe a new species of this genus, Biemna begonae sp. nov., collected by scuba diving in two different locations on the Galician coast (NW Spain). The typical skeleton of this group is composed by megascleres arranged in a plumose or plumoreticulate fashion, with ectosomal skeleton constituted by brushes of choanosomal tracts and microscleres, including sigmata, commata and raphides. The habitus of the new species is a hemispherical cushion-shaped with numerous tubu

Sponges (Porifera) represent the lowest metazoan phylum, characterized by a pronounced plasticity in the determination of cell lineages. In a first approach to elucidate the molecular mechanisms controlling the switch from the cell lineage with a putative indefinite growth capacity to senescent, somatic cells, the activity of the telomerase as an indicator for immortality has been determined. The studies were performed with the marine demosponges Suberites domuncula and Geodia cydonium. It was found that the activity for the telomerase in the tissue of both sponges is high; a quantitative anal

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol (MeSH), and dimethylsulfide (DMS) are abundant sulfur gases with crucial roles in global sulfur cycling, chemotaxis, and climate regulation. Microorganisms can S-methylate H2S and MeSH, which can be cytotoxic, to yield non-toxic DMS via MddA or MddH enzymes in largely terrestrial or marine environments, respectively. However, the potential of many important and abundant bacteria like Actinomycetota is underestimated due to unknown Mdd enzymes. Here, two novel S-adenosine-methionine-dependent H2S and MeSH S-methyltransferases, MddM1 and MddM2 are identified,

Mediterranean marine biota suffers from various anthropogenic threats. Among them, pollutants such as mercury (Hg) represent important environmental issues that are exacerbated by bioaccumulation and bioamplification along food webs via its organic form, monomethylmercury (MMHg). To date, very little is known regarding the impact of mercury on Porifera and the few available studies have been exclusively focused on Demospongiae. This work studies the effect of MMHgCl at different biological levels of Oscarella lobularis (Porifera, Homoscleromorpha). Bioaccumulation assays show that MMHgCl signi

Twenty candidate fossils with claim to be the oldest representative of the Phylum Porifera have been re-analysed. Three criteria are used to assess each candidate: (i) the diagnostic criteria needed to categorize sponges in the fossil record; (ii) the presence, or absence, of such diagnostic features in the putative poriferan fossils; and (iii) the age constraints for the candidate fossils. All three criteria are critical to the correct interpretation of any fossil and its placement within an evolutionary context. Our analysis shows that no Precambrian fossil candidate yet satisfies all three

Marine invertebrates are one of the major groups of organisms, which could be diversified under the major taxonomic groups of Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and many other minor phyla. To date, range of medicinal benefits and a significant number of marine natural products (MNPs) have been discovered from marine invertebrates. Seafood diet from edible marine invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans has been linked with various medicinal benefits to improve human health. Among marine invertebrates, spongers from phylum Porifera is the most dominant group responsi

Porifera, one of the earliest diverging metazoans, have shown a surprisingly complex immune repertoire. However, most information to date is based on de novo transcriptome assemblies, limiting our knowledge regarding the presence and evolution of poriferan immune repertoire. Here, we generated the chromosome-level genome of the demosponge Dysidea avara, a target species in studies on symbiosis and differential expression of immune genes. We examined the presence and the number of common immune protein domains in the annotated genome of D. avara, and we further focused on NOD-like Receptors (NL

Sponges from the phylum Porifera exist throughout the world in marine and freshwater environments. Although many encounters with humans are benign, some may lead to local dermatologic manifestations and in rare cases can cause more severe systemic reactions. Initial decontamination is of utmost importance to diminish the severity of the reaction. As contact between humans and coastal environments increases, it is important for physicians to know how to recognize and treat sponge dermatitis.

The Porifera (sponges) is one of the earliest phyletic lineages to branch off the metazoan tree. Although the body-plan of sponges is among the simplest in the animal kingdom and sponges lack nervous systems that communicate environmental signals to other cells, their larvae have sensory systems that generate coordinated responses to environmental cues. In eumetazoans (Cnidaria and Bilateria), the nervous systems of larvae often regulate metamorphosis through Ca(2+)-dependent signal transduction. In sponges, neither the identity of the receptor system that detects an inductive environmental cu

Spicules are mineral-based biocomposites skeletal structures that are widely distributed among phylogenetically distant groups of invertebrates (Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Echinodermata). Subepidermal spicules are formed under the ectodermal epithelium and are characterized for all groups except mollusks (Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Bivalvia), their spicules are located on the surface of the body. However, one group of mollusks (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) have unique subepidermal spicules that have never been detected above the ectodermal epithelium and similarly to those characterized fo

Contact with sponges (Phylum Porifera) usually results in minimal effects or abrasions, except for species that produce crinitoxins and can cause irritation and dermatitis. There are few reports of sponge stings, mainly in divers or collectors. We report a group of sponge stings from handling flame red/orange sponges on the beach, confirmed to be Tedania anhelans in five cases. All seven patients suffered immediate effects ranging from mild to severe pain, and local inflammation. A 38-year-old female and three children had delayed skin involvement including itchiness, pain, swelling and rednes

In the reefs off the Colombian coast (Caribbean Sea) and around Lizard Island, Australia (Pacific), palytoxin (PTX), which has been detected in zoanthid species of the genus Palythoa, also occurred in various other marine organisms living in close association with zoanthid colonies, e.g. sponges (Porifera), soft corals (Alcyonaria), gorgonians (Gorgonaria), mussels, and crustaceans. Predators, e.g. polychaete worms (Hermodice carunculata), a starfish (Acanthaster planci) and fish (Chaetodon species) feeding on Palythoa colonies, accumulate high toxin concentrations in their organs, where PTX i
