Regulatory role of external calcium on Pythium porphyrae (Oomycota) zoospore release, development and infection in causing red rot disease of Porphyra yezoensis (Rhodophyta).

Formation of zoosporangia and cleavage of zoosporangial cytoplasm to zoospores in Pythium porphyrae is absolutely dependent on extracellular calcium. Calcium ion could be substituted neither by monovalent nor divalent cations tested. Increased concentrations of extracellular calcium did not affect the release of zoospores from zoosporangia but inhibited the zoospore motility. Chelating calcium ion by EGTA has decreased the ability of encysted zoospores to germinate and form appressoria. The increased external calcium-ion concentration has decreased the infectivity of Porphyra yezoensis thalli

Inhibitory Effects of Porphyra tenera Extract on Oxidation and Inflammatory Responses.

Porphyra tenera (laver) has long been a popular and traditional seaweed food in Korea, Japan, and China. Historically, it was known as a marine medicinal herb to treat hemorrhoids and cholera morbus in Donguibogam. We investigated the effects of P. tenera extract (PTE) for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. These activities were measured using assays for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging and its superoxide dismutase- (SOD-) like activity, and through the inhibitory production of inflammatory mediators (prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), NO, tumo

Enzymatic hydrolysate of porphyra enhances the intestinal mucosal functions in obese mice.

Intestinal mucosal immunity is important to human body; however, obesity induced by high-fat diet may bring a series of problems, such as chronic inflammation which may damage intestinal mucosal immunity. In this study, the effects of two different enzymatic hydrolysates of porphyra on the function of intestinal mucosal were explored in obese mice. The results showed that 10 consecutive weeks of high-fat dietary intake resulted in weight gain and intestinal abnormalities in C57BL/6 mice. However, the administration of enzymatic hydrolysate of porphyra effectively protected the intestinal mucos

Enhancing the alkaline tolerance of Pseudoalteromonas porphyrae κ-carrageenase through surface charge engineering.

κ-Carrageenases with good alkaline tolerance are highly desirable for the green resource utilization of κ-carrageenan industrial waste residues. In this study, three mutants D49I, Q100R, and D49I-Q100R with improved alkaline tolerance were identified by optimizing the surface charge distribution of Pseudoalteromonas porphyrae κ-carrageenase KCgCD (WT). After 90 min of incubation at pH 10.0, the residual enzyme activities of D49I, Q100R, and D49I-Q100R increased by 28.4 %, 30.5 %, and 39.2 %, respectively, compared to the wild-type (WT) enzyme. Following 7 days of treatment at pH 10.0, WT lost

Stage-Specific Drivers of Carbon-Sequestration Dynamics in Porphyra Mariculture and Responses to Global Warming.

Seaweed mariculture represents a promising blue-carbon strategy, but its carbon-sequestration dynamics and resilience to warming remain insufficiently constrained. Here, we conducted a comprehensive field assessment at a representative Porphyra (nori) mariculture farm in coastal China, where we monitored multisphere carbon pools across the water-column, sediments, atmosphere, and biomass. Multivariate statistical analysis and machine-learning models were used to identify stage-specific drivers and project carbon-pool responses under multiple warming scenarios. Our results demonstrate that Porp

Taste characteristics of salty peptides from Porphyra haitanensis and the synergistic saltiness enhancement with CaCl2.

The excessive consumption of sodium-containing seasonings has led to an increased burden on individuals' cardiovascular system and adversely affected their health. Recently, an innovative salt-reducing strategy utilizing salty peptides has emerged with promising prospects. In this study, Porphyra haitanensis salty peptides (PHSPs) was obtained through hydrolysis and ultrafiltration. The salty taste of 30 mg/mL PHSPs was comparable to that of about 40 mM NaCl. The higher proportion of umami and sweet amino acids in PHSPs was found, which contributed to the salty and umami taste. Factors affecti

Culturable yeasts associated to different life stages of the farmed red seaweed Porphyra dioica.

Macroalgal-associated microbiomes are increasingly recognized as key determinants of host fitness, biogeochemical cycling, and cultivation stability in industrial aquaculture. While bacterial assemblages of red macroalgae have received considerable attention, the associated mycobiome, and in particular the yeast fraction, remains poorly characterized, despite mounting evidence that fungal taxa contribute to phytohormone signaling, surface colonization dynamics, and host stress tolerance. In this study, we characterized the culturable yeast fraction associated with five life stages of the red m

Potassium drives daily reversible thallus enlargement in the marine red alga Porphyra leucosticta (Rhodophyta).

Growth rate in terms of area expansion per 30 min was measured in the marine red algae Porphyra leucosticta under light/dark cycles of 6:6 h. Thalli grown in artificial seawater (ASW), under controlled ionic concentrations, showed a rapid thallus expansion just after light-on (morning-peak). Dark phase began with a significant thallus contraction (dark-peak) but no growth was observed until the next light phase. The removal of K+ from the medium inhibited the reversible growth peak that this species shows after light-on. On the other hand, the removal of Na+ did not have an apparent effect on

Seaweed Porphyra yezoensis polysaccharides with different molecular weights inhibit hydroxyapatite damage and osteoblast differentiation of A7R5 cells.

Vascular calcification (VC) is a common pathological manifestation in patients with cardiovascular diseases, leading to high mortality in patients with chronic kidney diseases. The deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals on vascular smooth muscle cells leads to cell damage, which promotes osteogenic transformation. In this study, four different molecular weights (MWs ) of Porphyra yezoensis polysaccharides (PYP1, PYP2, PYP3, and PYP4 with MWs of 576, 49.5, 12.6, and 4.02 kDa, respectively) were used to coat HAP, and the differences in toxicity and calcification of HAP on A7R5 cells before

Antioxidant and Anti-Aging Effects of Porphyra-334 Produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae in Human Skin Models.

Porphyra-334 (PPR-334) is one of the species of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), known as biological UV protection ingredients. In this study, we developed a large-scale purification process to extract PPR-334 from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and confirmed the previously identified efficacy of PPR-334, while also demonstrating its efficacy under UV-independent conditions. PPR-334 scavenged reactivity oxygen species (ROS) and increased catalase (CAT) gene expression in human epidermal keratinocyte cells (HEKa). In both HEKa and normal human dermal fibroblast cells (NHDF), PPR-334 suppressed th
