The Cerebellar Response to Visual Portion Size Cues Is Associated with the Portion Size Effect in Children.

The neural mechanisms underlying susceptibility to eating more in response to large portions (i.e., the portion size effect) remain unclear. Thus, the present study examined how neural responses to portion size relate to changes in weight and energy consumed as portions increase. Associations were examined across brain regions traditionally implicated in appetite control (i.e., an appetitive network) as well as the cerebellum, which has recently been implicated in appetite-related processes. Children without obesity (i.e., BMI-for-age-and-sex percentile < 90; N = 63; 55% female) viewed images

Portion distortion: typical portion sizes selected by young adults.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of obesity has increased in parallel with increasing portion sizes of individually packaged and ready-to-eat prepared foods as well as foods served at restaurants. Portion distortion (perceiving large portion sizes as appropriate amounts to eat at a single eating occasion) may contribute to increasing energy intakes and expanding waistlines. The purpose of this study was to determine typical portion sizes that young adults select, how typical portion sizes compare with reference portion sizes (based in this study on the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act's quantities

Research into food portion size: methodological aspects and applications.

Portion sizes for certain foods have been increasing dramatically in recent years alongside obesity rates, concurring with the phenomenon of the portion size effect (more is consumed when more is offered). Portion size may be defined based on different purposes such as for dietary assessment, or therapeutic advice or food labelling, resulting in a variety of measurement methods and specifications. This situation has resulted in disagreements on establishing portion size recommendations by manufacturers, food distributors, restaurants, health professionals and policy makers, contributing to con

An exploratory study on portion size estimation errors: psychological correlates of portion size estimation errors in a non-clinical sample with normal-weight.

PURPOSE: Accurate perception of food portion sizes is implicated in healthy eating, yet little is known about psychological correlates of portion estimation in non-clinical, normal-weight adults. This exploratory study examined whether consumption intent (self vs other) and markers of psychological processes associated with eating (dietary restraint, shape/weight overvaluation, body dissatisfaction) are associated with portion size estimation errors, and whether these errors relate to body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Seventy-one adults (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) without current or past psychiatric

Portion size affects food selection in an immersive virtual reality buffet and is related to measured intake in laboratory meals varying in portion size.

A crucial step for validating the utility of an immersive virtual reality (iVR) buffet to study eating behavior is to determine whether variations in food characteristics such as portion size (PS) are relevant predictors of food selection in an iVR buffet. We tested whether manipulating PS in an iVR buffet affects the weight of food selected, and whether this response to PS is similar to participants' measured intake when PS varies at laboratory meals. In a randomized crossover design, 91 adults (18-71 y; 64 females; BMI = 25.3 ± 5.7) used their iVR remote to select lunch and dinner portions f

Expanding portion sizes in the US marketplace: implications for nutrition counseling.

The greater energy content of larger food portions could be contributing to the increasing prevalence of overweight. Prevention guidelines recommend "sensible" portion sizes but do not define them. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines standard serving sizes for dietary guidance, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines standard servings for food labels. To use these standards in counseling, nutritionists must know the sizes of portions available in the marketplace. We determined marketplace portion sizes, identified changes in these sizes with time, and compared current ma

Development and validation of a photographic food atlas for portion size estimation in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Accurate portion size estimation is essential for dietary assessment, yet existing food atlases have limited applicability in Singapore due to its multi-ethnic culinary heritage and unique dietary patterns. This study describes the development and validation of the first comprehensive photographic food atlas designed specifically for Singapore. METHOD: The atlas was developed using two primary data sources, the 2021 Health Promotion Board Energy and Nutrient Composition of Food database and 24-h dietary recall survey from Singapore's 1st Total Diet Study, to ensure representativen

Food portion size area mediates energy effects on expected anxiety in anorexia nervosa.

A study in which adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa (n = 24) rated their expected food-anxiety in response to images of portions of food (potatoes, rice pizza, and M&Ms) showed that lower energy-dense foods elicited higher expected anxiety per kilocalorie than higher energy-dense foods. However, the area of the portion sizes could be an unmeasured variable driving the anxiety response. To test the hypothesis that area mediates the effects of energy content on expected anxiety, the same images of portions were measured in area (cm2), and standardized values of expected anxiety were regre

Immunochemical quantification and particle size distribution of airborne papain in a meat portioning facility.

The use of enzymes in industry continues to expand. With this increased use comes a concerted need to better understand potential respiratory health hazards to exposed workers and to quantify exposure levels that cause impaired health. To this end, projects were undertaken by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Health Hazard Evaluations Program and Cole Associates whereby this information was collected. Data concerning medical evaluation and aspects of industrial hygiene are the subjects of two separate reports from these respective groups. This method/results rep

Demographic Groups Likely Affected by Regulating Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Portion Sizes.

INTRODUCTION: Sugar-sweetened beverages are a key driver of obesity. Portion-size regulations typically limit the volume of unsealed sugar-sweetened beverage containers to 16 fluid ounces. These regulations could reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, but whom these policies would affect remains unknown. This study evaluates demographic groups likely affected by hypothetical national portion-size regulations modeled on policy language and scopes from New York City and California. METHODS: Data from adults (aged 18-65 years, n=6,594) in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surve

Portion, package or tableware size for changing selection and consumption of food, alcohol and tobacco.

BACKGROUND: Overeating and harmful alcohol and tobacco use have been linked to the aetiology of various non-communicable diseases, which are among the leading global causes of morbidity and premature mortality. As people are repeatedly exposed to varying sizes and shapes of food, alcohol and tobacco products in environments such as shops, restaurants, bars and homes, this has stimulated public health policy interest in product size and shape as potential targets for intervention. OBJECTIVES: 1) To assess the effects of interventions involving exposure to different sizes or sets of physical di

Psychological factors associated with ratings of portion size: relevance to the risk profile for obesity.

The ability to assess accurately the relative size of food portions is highly variable in the population. This study was designed to identify salient individual differences that correlate with this variation since estimation errors are seen as a barrier to the control of food intake and a detriment to many obesity treatment strategies. Healthy weight and obese adult women were assessed on a self-report measure of food amount ratings. We predicted that a high sensitivity to reward, symptoms of binge eating, and a preference for fat foods would relate positive to scores on this rating scale, and

A brief mindfulness intervention reduces unhealthy eating when hungry, but not the portion size effect.

OBJECTIVE: The present research examined the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention to foster healthy eating. Specifically, we tested whether a brief mindfulness manipulation can prevent the portion size effect, and reduce overeating on unhealthy snacks when hungry. METHODS: 110 undergraduate participants (MAge=20.9±2.3; MBMI=22.3±2.5) were served a small or a large portion of chocolate chip cookies after listening to an audio book or performing a mindfulness exercise (i.e., body scan). Current level of hunger was assessed unobtrusively on a visual analog scale before the eating situatio

Uncertainty in intake due to portion size estimation in 24-hour recalls varies between food groups.

Portion size estimation is expected to be one of the largest sources of uncertainty in dietary assessment of the individual. Therefore, we demonstrated a method to quantify uncertainty due to portion size estimation in the usual intake distributions of vegetables, fruit, bread, protein, and potassium. Dutch participants of the European Food Consumption Validation study completed 2 nonconsecutive 24-h recall interviews. In short, the uncertainty analysis consists of Monte Carlo simulations drawing values for portion size from lognormal uncertainty distributions. The uncertainty of the usual int

Public Health and Legal Arguments in Favor of a Policy to Cap the Portion Sizes of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages.

In 2012, the New York City Board of Health passed a regulation prohibiting the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages in containers above 16 ounces in the city's food service establishments. The beverage industry and various retailers sued the city to prevent enforcement of the law, arguing that the board had overstepped its authority. In June 2014, the state's highest court agreed and struck down the regulation. Here we report the results of a content analysis of the public testimony related to the case submitted to the New York City Department of Mental Health and Hygiene. We identified major arg

Breadth of substance use is associated with the selection of a larger food portion size via elevated impulsivity.

Substance use is associated with altered or elevated food consumption and disordered eating. In the present study we examined whether breadth (variety) of drug use was associated with elevated portion size in a general population sample as it was in persons in recovery from substance use disorder. Furthermore, measures of emotional eating, impulsivity, food misuse, food craving were taken as possible mediators and reward responsiveness was examined as a potential moderator of this association. 444 adults (48.6 % women, mean age of 47.8 years) completed an online study in which they were asked

How do patients with eating disorders perceive and evaluate food portion sizes? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The selection of adequate portion sizes plays a key role in the nutritional treatment of eating disorders (EDs). There is limited knowledge concerning the estimation of portion sizes in individuals with EDs. METHOD: We performed a systematic review according to the PRISMA statement to synthesise current evidence in this field. Of N = 584 hits, four full-texts were included in the qualitative synthesis. RESULTS: While patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) tend to overestimate the size of energy-dense food items and small to medium sized meal portions, they do not show a different est

Implicit satiety goals and food-related expectations predict portion size in older adults: Findings from the BAMMBE cohort.

Portion size selection is an indicator of appetite and within younger adults, is predicted by factors such as expected satiety, liking and motivations to achieve an ideal sensation of fullness (i.e., implicit satiety goals). Currently, there is limited research available on the determinants of portion size selection within older adults. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the relationship between individual differences in implicit satiety goals, food-related expectations, and portion size selection in older adults. Free-living older adult Singaporeans (N = 115; Nmales = 62; age: M =

The ecology of eating: smaller portion sizes in France Than in the United States help explain the French paradox.

Part of the "French paradox" can be explained by the fact that the French eat less than Americans. We document that French portion sizes are smaller in comparable restaurants, in the sizes of individual portions of foods (but not other items) in supermarkets, in portions specified in cookbooks, and in the prominence of "all you can eat" restaurants in dining guides. We also present data, from observations at McDonald's, that the French take longer to eat than Americans. Our results suggest that in the domain of eating, and more generally, more attention should be paid to ecological factors, ev
