To investigate further the hormonal and metabolic adaptations occurring when carbohydrates are ingested after prolonged exercise, we have compared the fate of a 100-g oral glucose load (using 'naturally labelled' 13C-glucose) in healthy volunteers after an overnight fast at rest either without previous exercise or after a 3-h exercise performed on a treadmill at about 50% of the individual VO2 max. In comparison to the control conditions, the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) performed in the post-exercise recovery period was characterized by a greater rise in peripheral blood glucose levels

The aim of this study was to investigate whether post-exercise vitamin C supplementation influences recovery from an unaccustomed bout of exercise. Sixteen male subjects were allocated to either a placebo (P; n=8) or vitamin C (VC) group ( n=8). Subjects performed a prolonged (90-min) intermittent shuttle-running test, and supplementation began after the cessation of exercise. Immediately after exercise the VC group consumed 200 mg of VC dissolved in a 500 ml drink, whereas the subjects in the P group consumed the drink alone. Later on the same day and then in the morning and evening of the fo

Ketogenic diet has been introduced in therapeutic areas for more than a century, but the role of ketones in exercise performance has only been explored in the past decade. One of the main reasons that allows the investigation of the role of ketones in exercise performance is the emergence of exogenous ketones, allowing athletes to achieve the state of ketosis acutely, and independent of their metabolic states. While there are mixed results showing either exogenous ketones improve exercise performance or no effect, the mechanisms of action are still being heavily researched. Moreover, these ear

It is important to use short breaks to accelerate post-exercise recovery in sports. Previous studies have revealed that vibration can reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. However, there is still high heterogeneity in the effects of vibration on cardiovascular autonomic activities, and most studies to date have focused on high-frequency vibration. This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-frequency lower-body vibration (LBV) on post-exercise changes in heart rate variability and peripheral arterial tone. Ten men and 9 women aged 20 to 25 were recruited for this study. Each subject visi

We present the case of a 45-year-old healthy man who successfully completed three stages of the Bruce protocol but developed inferolateral ST segment elevation in the recovery phase. The ECG change was associated with a marked drop in blood pressure. He underwent emergency coronary angiography which revealed normal coronary arteries. It is likely that post-exercise hypotension triggered coronary spasm which caused the ST segment elevation. Alternatively, coronary spasm may have been the primary event, inducing sufficient myocardial ischaemia to cause a marked drop in blood pressure. Exercise t

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective comparison of spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects and ambulatory subjects.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of the presence and level of SCI on heart rate recovery (HRR).
SETTING: Outpatient SCI center.
METHODS: HRR was determined in 63 SCI subjects (26 with tetraplegia, 22 with high-level paraplegia, 15 with low-level paraplegia) and 26 ambulatory subjects. To adjust for differences in heart rate reserve between groups (HR peak minus HR rest), HRR was also 'normalized' to a range of 1 at peak heart rate and to 0 at 8 min, and the shapes of HRR curves were compa

The functional significance of pomegranate (POM) supplementation on physiological responses during and following exercise is currently unclear. This systematic review aimed (i) to evaluate the existing literature assessing the effects of POM supplementation on exercise performance and recovery; exercise-induced muscle damage, oxidative stress, inflammation; and cardiovascular function in healthy adults and (ii) to outline the experimental conditions in which POM supplementation is more or less likely to benefit exercise performance and/or recovery. Multiple electronic databases were used to se

PURPOSE: To investigate sports compression garment (CG)-induced recovery hemodynamics and their potential impact on subsequent cycling performance.
METHODS: In a randomized crossover design, 13 physically active men (20.9 ± 1.4 years; 65.9 ± 7.8 kg; 173.3 ± 4.8 cm; peak power output 254.2 ± 27.2 W) underwent 2 experimental trials. During each experimental trial, the subjects performed 20-min fatiguing preload cycling followed by 60-min passive recovery wearing either a sports CG (28.6 ± 9.4 mmHg) or gymnastic pants (CON). A 5-min all-out cycling performance test was subsequently conducted and

The effects of protein supplementation on the ratings of energy/fatigue, muscle soreness [ascending (A) and descending (D) stairs], and serum creatine kinase levels following a marathon run were examined. Variables were compared between recreational male and female runners ingesting carbohydrate + protein (CP) during the run (CPDuring, n = 8) versus those that were consuming carbohydrate (CHODuring,n = 8). In a second study, outcomes were compared between subjects who consumed CP or CHO immediately following exercise [CPPost (n = 4) versus CHOPost (n = 4)]. Magnitude-based inferences revealed

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), in particular sports-related concussions (SRCs), are a significant health concern for young athletes in the United States. Historically, treatment has consisted of prolonged physical and cognitive rest, requiring athletes to abstain from activity until symptoms resolve and physician clearance is obtained. However, emerging evidence suggests that the early introduction of light aerobic exercise during the post-concussive period may shorten symptom duration. While several individual studies have explored this approach, no recent comprehensive literature reviews h

Post-exercise recovery is a multi-facetted process that will vary depending on the nature of the exercise, the time between exercise sessions and the goals of the exerciser. From a nutritional perspective, the main considerations are: (1) optimisation of muscle protein turnover; (2) glycogen resynthesis; (3) rehydration; (4) management of muscle soreness; (5) appropriate management of energy balance. Milk is approximately isotonic (osmolality of 280-290 mosmol/kg), and the mixture of high quality protein, carbohydrate, water and micronutrients (particularly sodium) make it uniquely suitable as

Purpose: This study examined the effect of whey protein consumption following high-intensity interval swimming (HIIS) on muscle damage, inflammatory cytokines and performance in adolescent swimmers. Methods: Fifty-four swimmers (11-17 years-old) were stratified by age, sex and body mass to a whey protein (PRO), isoenergetic carbohydrate (CHO) or a water/placebo (H2O) group. Following baseline blood samples (06:00 h) and a standardised breakfast, participants performed a maximal 200 m swim, followed by HIIS. A total of two post-exercise boluses were consumed following HIIS and ~5 h post-baselin

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, partly mediated by autonomic dysfunction. Heart rate recovery (HRR), particularly during the first minute after exercise (HRR1), reflects early parasympathetic reactivation and provides an integrative measure of cardiovascular autonomic regulation. However, data across non-dialysis CKD stages remain limited. In this prospective observational study, 120 patients with CKD stages 1-4 and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent symptom-limited treadmill exercise testing. HRR was calculated

INTRODUCTION: Physiological and psychological recovery, i.e., the balance between fatigue/stress and recovery and evaluated through heart rate variability (HRV), is essential for the good performance of athletes in all their activities. Cold water immersion (CWI) has been shown to reduce the negative effects of fatigue/stress by inducing physiological and biochemical changes that promote faster recovery. This study aims to analyze the scientific literature on the effects of CWI on post-exercise recovery, as measured by HRV in athletes.
METHODS: A systematic review of randomized clinical trial

The present study examined the influence of ingesting a moderate dose of alcohol on the main determinants of blood rheology namely: plasma viscosity, plasma fibrinogen concentration, plasma total protein concentration, and haematocrit. Eleven moderately active young men were studied immediately after a standardised cycle ergometer test and during the 24 h period of recovery. Alcohol (0.7 g/kg body mass) was given 1 h after exercise on one test occasion, while an equal volume of alcohol-free solution was administered on the other. Venous blood samples were obtained at baseline, post exercise, a

Our prior results showed that an acute bout of endurance exercise for 6 h, but not 1 h, decreased pancreatic amylase activity, indicating that acute endurance exercise may affect carbohydrate digestive capacity in an exercise duration-dependent manner. Here, we investigated the effects of acute endurance exercise of different intensities on mouse pancreatic amylase activity. Male C57BL/6J mice performed low- or high-intensity running exercise for 60 min at either 10 (Ex-Low group) or 20 m/min (Ex-High group). The control group comprised sedentary mice. Immediately after acute exercise, pancrea

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung disease (CLD) from either airway obstruction or parenchymal affections can lead to secondary pulmonary hypertension. It may be interesting to compare the two types of CLD-PH.
METHODS: Subjects of CLD were first evaluated for the primary category of disease with chest X-ray, HRCT chest, spirometry, and DLCO (diffusion capacity) and then for the presence of PH through exercise of the institutional clinic-radio-echocardiographic algorithm. Those qualifying as either unmixed restrictive (ILD) or COPD (chronic obstructive airway disease) with PH underwent two-chair test fo

The aim of this review and meta-analysis was to critically determine the possible effects of different cooling applications, compared to non-cooling, passive post-exercise strategies, on recovery characteristics after various, exhaustive exercise protocols up to 96 hours (hrs). A total of n = 36 articles were processed in this study. To establish the research question, the PICO-model, according to the PRISMA guidelines was used. The Cochrane's risk of bias tool, which was used for the quality assessment, demonstrated a high risk of performance bias and detection bias. Meta-analyses of subjecti

There has been substantial progress in the knowledge of exercise and type 1 diabetes, with the development of guidelines for optimal glucose management. In addition, an increasing number of people living with type 1 diabetes are pushing their physical limits to compete at the highest level of sport. However, the post-exercise recovery routine, particularly with a focus on sporting performance, has received little attention within the scientific literature, with most of the focus being placed on insulin or nutritional adaptations to manage glycaemia before and during the exercise bout. The post
