Emerging posttraumatic growth: a prospective study with pre- and posttrauma psychological predictors.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is viewed as a positive psychological change resulting from a struggle with trauma. A number of trauma-related factors have been proven effective in predicting PTG; however, the effects of pretrauma psychological factors on PTG have not been adequately evaluated (e.g., using a prospective design). This prospective study examined the effects of pretrauma psychological factors (e.g., coping styles, prior trauma) on PTG. In total, 810 Taiwanese undergraduate students were recruited for a baseline survey (Time 1), among whom 592 completed a survey 2 months later (Time 2)

The impact of receiving an HIV diagnosis and cognitive processing on psychological distress and posttraumatic growth.

This study examined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as a traumatic stressor, intrusive and deliberate cognitive processing, psychological distress, and posttraumatic growth. One-hundred twelve participants completed interviews on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Criterion A, Rumination Scale-Revised, Impact of Event Scale, and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory; relationships were modeled using path analysis. Model 1 attempted to replicate prior empirical research, Model 2 attempted to empirically replicate part of the posttraumatic growth theoretical model, and Model 3 attempted to emp

Posttraumatic growth in clinical psychology - a critical review and introduction of a two component model.

Positive psychological or personal changes in the aftermath of trauma, defined as the result of the struggle with highly stressful events, have recently elicited heightened attention by trauma researchers. This article aims at summarizing the most important theoretical models and conceptualizations of posttraumatic growth (PTG) and addresses the issue of the adaptive significance of this phenomenon. It further renders a thorough empirical review of the relationship between PTG and psychological adjustment. European findings are specifically incorporated. As a conclusion, a two component cognit

Women with Ovarian Cancer: Examining the Role of Social Support and Rumination in Posttraumatic Growth, Psychological Distress, and Psychological Well-being.

The present study examined the role of social support and rumination (deliberate vs. intrusive) in posttraumatic growth (PTG), psychological distress (PD), and psychological well-being (PWB) among women with ovarian cancer. Sixty-seven women who had experienced ovarian cancer were recruited through social media and cancer-related websites, and completed an online survey. Contrary to hypotheses, results indicated that social support was not predictive of PTG, and the mediation of rumination was not significant in the regression of social support on PTG. Social support was, however, positively c

Guilt, shame, and fear in relation to posttraumatic growth through psychological flexibility among adults reporting dating violence exposure.

Dating violence can be experienced as a form of relational trauma, yet comparatively little is known about whether guilt, shame, and fear show differentiated indirect associations with posttraumatic growth when global psychological flexibility is specified as an intervening construct among adults reporting dating violence exposure. This cross-sectional study tested a hypothesized structural equation model in 396 adults (M = 32.15, SD = 9.33) who responded affirmatively to a dichotomous screening item concerning prior dating violence. The item was used solely to determine eligibility, and datin

Exploring the relationship between posttraumatic growth, cognitive processing, psychological distress, and social constraints in a sample of breast cancer patients.

Posttraumatic growth (the perception of positive life changes after an encounter with a trauma) often occurs among breast cancer patients and can be influenced by certain demographic, medical, and psychosocial parameters. Social constraints on disclosure (the deprivation of the opportunity to express feelings and thoughts regarding the trauma) and the cognitive processing of the disease seem to be involved in the development of posttraumatic growth. Through the present study the authors aim to: investigate the levels of posttraumatic growth in a sample of 202 women with breast cancer in Greece

From trauma to transformation: How potentially traumatic military experiences, PTSD symptoms, and psychological strengths shape posttraumatic growth in Israeli female veterans.

OBJECTIVE: While increasing attention has been paid to the negative ramifications of military service on female veterans, little is known about the factors that support positive adaptation and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in this population. This study examined how military-related risk factors (combat exposure, sexist hostility), outcomes (posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms), and psychological strengths (self-efficacy, self-esteem, psychological flexibility, prosocial intentions, gratitude, hope, and meaning-centered coping) contribute to PTG among Israeli female combat and noncombat vetera

Efficacy of combined naikan and morita therapies on psychological distress and posttraumatic growth in Chinese patients with advanced cancer: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Advanced cancer (AC) patients experience serious physical and psychological problems with the disease progression. When approaching the end of life, these patients have to cope with not only the bodily illness, but also the spiritual crisis. Conventional psychological treatments reduce distress to a certain extent, but for patients with AC, especially when they face progressive illness and are approaching death, their psychological problems are complex, and no simple solutions are in sight. Therefore, we designed this study to evaluate the efficacy of the combined Naikan therapy (N

The contribution of combat exposure; depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms; and psychological strengths to posttraumatic growth in the Israel-Hamas War among reserve veterans.

OBJECTIVE: While extensive research has documented the negative psychological consequences of military service, less is known about the factors that support posttraumatic growth (PTG) among reserve combatants during active war. This study examined the relative contribution of combat exposure, psychological distress (posttraumatic stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms), and psychological resources (self-compassion, psychological flexibility, unit support, sense of purpose, hope, meaning prioritizing, and nature-self connection) to PTG among Israeli reserve combatants during the "Iron Swords"

Personal and work-related factors associated with post-traumatic growth in nurses: A mixed studies systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses, assuming a wide range of clinical and patient care responsibilities in a healthcare team, are highly susceptible to direct and indirect exposure to traumatic experiences. However, literature has shown that nurses with certain traits developed a new sense of personal strength in the face of adversity, known as post-traumatic growth (PTG). This review aimed to synthesize the best available evidence to evaluate personal and work-related factors associated with PTG among nurses. DESIGN: Mixed studies systematic review. METHODS: Studies examining factors influencing PTG on c
