[Potentially inappropriate medications in the elderly: a list adapted to French medical practice].

Drug induced adverse effects are frequently encountered in geriatrics. Their occurrence can be limited by an adapted prescription. Potentially inappropriate medications are drugs with an unfavourable benefit to risk ratio when other safer or more efficient therapeutic alternatives are available. An expert consensus allowed us to establish a new list of potentially inappropriate medications for people aged 75 or over, taking into account French prescribing habits. The drugs or the drug-classes proposed in this list are, generally speaking, and when possible, to be avoided in the elderly, but ca

Development of a Consensus List of Potentially Inappropriate Medications for Korean Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Korea has recently attained the aged society status and the growth rate of the aging population will be among the most rapid worldwide. The objective of this study was to develop a credible list of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) for Korean older adults. METHODS: A new Korean PIMs list was produced through a comprehensive structured expert survey (modified Delphi method). To generate an expert panel, we invited the nomination of experts in geriatric medication from the Korean Geriatric Society, the Korean Academy of Clinical Geriatrics, the Korean Academy of Family Me

Prescription of Potentially Inappropriate Medication in Older Inpatients of an Internal Medicine Ward: Concordance and Overlap Among the EU(7)-PIM List and Beers and STOPP Criteria.

Background: Age-related comorbidities prone older adults to polypharmacy and to an increased risk of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use. This work aims to analyze the concordance and overlap among the EU(7)-PIM list, 2019 Beers criteria, and Screening Tool of Older Person's Prescriptions (STOPP) version 2 criteria and also to analyze the prevalence of PIM. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on older inpatients of an internal medicine ward. Demographic, clinical, and pharmacological data were collected, during March 2020. After PIM identification by the EU(7)-PIM li

Potentially inappropriate medications according to PRISCUS list and FORTA (Fit fOR The Aged) classification in geriatric psychiatry: a cross-sectional study.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) constitute a frequent cause of hospitalization in older people. The risk of ADRs is increased by the prescription of potentially inappropriate medications for older people (PIMs). The PRISCUS list and the FORTA classification represent established tools to detect PIMs. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of PIM prescriptions on the gerontopsychiatric ward of a university hospital in Germany. To this aim, medication charts of 92 patients (mean age 75.9 ± 7.7 years; 66.3% female) were analyzed on a weekly basis until patien

The frequency of prescription of immediate-release nifedipine for elderly patients in Germany: utilization analysis of a substance on the PRISCUS list of potentially inappropriate medications.

BACKGROUND: Immediate-release nifedipine is on the PRISCUS list of drugs that should not be given to elderly patients. We studied the use of this calcium-channel blocker under real-life conditions. METHODS: In 2009, we carried out a cross-sectional study based on the Statutory Health Insurance Sample AOK Hesse/KV Hesse with a sample size of 260 672 insurees. We used an anatomic-therapeutic-chemical classification (C08) to identify prescriptions for calcium-channel blockers. We determined from brand names and dosage forms whether nifedipine was prescribed in an immediate-release or sustained-r

Assessing the quality of evidence on safety: specifications for application and suggestions for adaptions of the GRADE-criteria in the context of preparing a list of potentially inappropriate medications for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Systematic reviews that synthesize safety outcomes pose challenges (e.g. rare events), which raise questions for grading the strength of the body of evidence. This is maybe one reason why in many potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) lists the recommendations are not based on formalized systems for assessing the quality of the body of evidence such as GRADE. In this contribution, we describe specifications and suggest adaptions of the GRADE system for grading the quality of evidence on safety outcomes, which were developed in the context of preparing a PIM-list, namely PRISCUS

Prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications in people living with HIV: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) are associated with adverse health outcomes. The use of PIM among persons living with HIV (PLHIV) could be more problematic due to peculiarities such as antiretroviral toxicity and drug-disease interactions. However, PIM among PLHIV continues to receive little attention. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review and estimate the prevalence of PIM among PLHIV. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to identify relevant studies from 1 January 2014 to 30 June 2024. Studies included were peer-reviewed article

The Process of Deprescribing in Older Adults With Potentially Inappropriate Medication or Polypharmacy: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Deprescribing is increasingly recognized as an effective strategy for reducing potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use and polypharmacy in older adults. However, existing deprescribing frameworks often lack detailed operational guidance, which may hinder their routine implementation in clinical practice. To systematically map and characterize the reported deprescribing processes in older adults with PIM use or polypharmacy and identify gaps in their operationalization. METHODS: PubMed, Embase (Ovid), and Web of Science were comprehensively searched for studies describing de

[The most common STOPP/START criteria in Spain. A review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: To analyse STOPP/START criteria found most frequently in the studies carried out in Spain, in order to identify the main areas of potentially inappropriate prescribing. METHODS: A literature review was carried out on the original studies performed in Spain that applied the original version of the STOPP/START criteria and that described the most common STOPP and/or START criteria found. In each study, a weighted analysis was performed on the criteria found, by assigning 5 points to the criterion in first position, 4 points to the criterion in second position, and so on to fifth crit

[Polypharmacy in older people].

After the publication of the guidelines about the safe drug therapy for older people in 2015 by the Japan Geriatrics Society, the risk of polypharmacy has become popular. Older people are likely to have multimorbidity, resulting in the use of multiple drugs. This not only increases the frequency of side effects, but also increase confusion and difficulty in medication management and adherence. Polypharmacy is the problem related to these complicated drug therapies and will increase by age. It is necessary to review drugs and resolve polypharmacy without making comorbid conditions worth. Potentially inappropriate medications among elderly people with neurocognitive disorders - A nationwide register-based study using 3 different explicit criteria.

BACKGROUND: The use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) is a problem since it might contribute significantly to adverse drug reactions and hospital admissions among elderly with major neurocognitive disorder (NCD). To assess the appropriateness of drug treatment, different explicit criteria have been developed. OBJECTIVES: To investigate and compare the prevalence of PIM users among elderly with major NCD on a nationwide basis using 3 different explicit criteria. Furthermore, the study aimed to investigate factors associated with the use of PIMs. METHODS: This nationwide register

[Deprescription in old people: It's time to take action].

The use of drugs has undeniable benefits to the elderly, but it is not exempt from undesirable effects. Deprescription is the process of systematic medication review with the target of achieving the best risk-benefit ratio based on the best available evidence. This process is especially important for polymedicated elderly patients as well as those overtreated, frail, terminally ill and at the end of life. The deprescription must be done in stages, establishing a close follow-up in case problems appear after withdrawal. In the decision-making process, it is very important to consider the patien
