Processed animal proteins in poultry nutrition: nutritional value, digestibility, safety, and applications.

Processed animal proteins (PAPs) are concentrated protein ingredients derived from animal by-products through rendering or hydrolytic processes and are increasingly reconsidered in poultry nutrition due to their nutritional and sustainability advantages. This review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the composition, digestibility, functional properties, safety, and practical applications of PAPs in poultry feeding systems. Nutritional value varies considerably depending on raw material origin and processing conditions, with excessive heat treatment reducing amino acid availability through

Localization of S-100 proteins in the testis and epididymis of poultry and rabbits.

The present investigation was conducted to demonstrate S-100 protein in the testis and epididymis of adult chickens, Sudani ducks, pigeons, and rabbits. This study may represent the first indication for the presence of S-100 in the male reproductive organs of these species and might therefore serve as a milestone for further reports. In the testis of chickens, pigeons and rabbits, intense S-100 was seen in Sertoli cells. S-100 was also seen in the endothelial lining of blood vessels in rabbit testis. On the contrary, no S-100 reaction was detected in the Sertoli cells of Sudani ducks. In epidi

Protein fermentation in the gut; implications for intestinal dysfunction in humans, pigs, and poultry.

The amount of dietary protein is associated with intestinal disease in different vertebrate species. In humans, this is exemplified by the association between high-protein intake and fermentation metabolite concentrations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In production animals, dietary protein intake is associated with postweaning diarrhea in piglets and with the occurrence of wet litter in poultry. The underlying mechanisms by which dietary protein contributes to intestinal problems remain largely unknown. Fermentation of undigested protein in the hindgut results in formation of fe

Enzymatic protein hydrolysis of poultry carcasses and soybean okara: comparison of endo- and exoproteases on protein recovery and quality.

Ineffective waste management leads to a loss of resources. Therefore, recovering waste through sustainable technologies is crucial. In this study, enzymatic hydrolysis was used as a recovery strategy to valorize poultry carcasses and soybean okara residues. Several peptidases (endopeptidases and an exopeptidase) were employed, individually and in tandem. Given the high protein content of the substrates, the produced hydrolysates were analyzed focusing on the protein fraction. Among the tested enzymes, alkaline endopeptidases demonstrated a high degree of protein hydrolysis (DH) and yield. When

Serum and acute phase protein changes in laying hens, infested with poultry red mite.

The poultry red mite (PRM) is one of the most economically important ectoparasites of laying hens globally. This mite can have significant deleterious effects on its fowl host including distress, anemia, reduced egg production, and reduced egg quality. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of PRM on the serum protein profile in laying hens and its effect on the acute phase proteins (APPs) to assess their potential as biomarkers for mite infestation. Three APPs: alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (AGP), serum amyloid-A (SAA), and ceruloplasmin (CP) were measured in serum samples collected f

Differentiating commensal and disease-associated Enterococcus cecorum isolates in poultry using protein sequences.

Enterococcus cecorum (EC) is an avian enteric commensal, but around the year 2000, it emerged as a frequent causative agent of bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) in older broilers. More recently, around 2020, EC has also been isolated from cases of sepsis (SS) in young birds. Differentiating pathogenic from commensal isolates has therefore become critical for surveillance and control efforts. In this study, we applied amino acid k-mer profiling (k = 5) along with supervised learning algorithms, including Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron approaches, to identify minimal se

Carbohydrate and protein adaptation in low-protein diets for livestock and poultry: a nutritional revolution from static balance to dynamic synergy.

Low-protein diet is a pivotal strategy for alleviating protein feed shortage and promoting the sustainable development of the livestock industry. However, the utilization efficiency of carbohydrate and protein nutrients in livestock and poultry remains relatively low, and carbohydrate-protein metabolism asynchrony is the core bottleneck limiting their efficient utilization. Carbohydrate and protein adaptation, based on low-protein diets, makes a shift from traditional static energy and nitrogen balance theories. By precisely aligning the digestive release patterns of carbohydrates and proteins

Gut microbial signatures in poultry under low-protein diets and lysine restriction: implications for precision nutrition.

Three key signatures - microbial, nutritional, and epigenetic - are pivotal in nutrigenomics, mediating poultry responses to nutritional signals, such as low-protein diets (LPDs) and lysine restriction (LR). These multidimensional signatures - encompassing bacterial, archaeal, and fungal taxonomy, functional genes, and metabolomic profiles (short-chain fatty acids; SCFAs) - orchestrate host metabolism, immunity, and feed conversion ratio (FCR). This PRISMA-ScR scoping review synthesizes multi-omics evidence showing that LPDs shift cecal fermentation toward saccharolytic pathways, enriching but

Protein nanoparticle-based vaccine candidate produced in Nicotiana benthamiana against non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica in poultry.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica serovars are enteric pathogens in humans that can be acquired from poultry products. Salmonella colonisation in poultry is an important cause of economic losses. Due to challenges in controlling Salmonella in poultry and the emergence of well-adapted, antibiotic-resistant serovars, there is a need for innovative control strategies, such as vaccines. In this work, plants were used to produce conserved antigenic epitopes of Salmonella FepA, an outer membrane protein involved in iron uptake, genetically fused in tandem to self-assembling lumazine synthase from Br

Protein-L-Isoaspartyl Methyltransferase (PIMT) Is Required for Survival of Salmonella Typhimurium at 42°C and Contributes to the Virulence in Poultry.

Poultry birds are asymptomatic reservoir of Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) but act as source of human infection for this bacterium. Inside the poultry, S. Typhimurium experiences several stresses, 42°C body temperature of birds is one of them. Proteins are highly susceptible to temperature mediated damage. Conversion of protein bound aspartate (Asp) residues to iso-aspartate (iso-Asp) is one of such modifications that occur at elevated temperature. Iso-Asp formation has been linked to protein inactivation and compromised cellular survival. Protein-L-isoaspartyl methyltransferase (PIMT

Cell invasion of poultry-associated Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis isolates is associated with pathogenicity, motility and proteins secreted by the type III secretion system.

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a major cause of food-borne gastroenteritis in humans worldwide. Poultry and poultry products are considered the major vehicles of transmission to humans. Using cell invasiveness as a surrogate marker for pathogenicity, we tested the invasiveness of 53 poultry-associated isolates of S. Enteritidis in a well-differentiated intestinal epithelial cell model (Caco-2). The method allowed classification of the isolates into low (n = 7), medium (n = 18) and high (n = 30) invasiveness categories. Cell invasiveness of the isolates did not corr

Systematic Analysis of Peptide Mapping and Structural and Functional Identification of Protein Hydrolysates Derived from Six Kinds of Livestock/Poultry Meats Based on Peptidomics.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cooking treatment on the structural properties and potential bioactive peptide release of six meat protein hydrolysates using a cooking-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis model. FTIR showed that cooking reduced the contents of α-helix and β-sheet structures and promoted the formation of β-turn and random helix structures. The enzymatic hydrolysates demonstrated evident antioxidant activity in vitro, both before and after cooking, which was affected by species differences. LC-MS/MS combined with bioinformatics analysis indicated that cookin
