Since April 2025, the new Dental Trauma guideline has been available. It consists of two interrelated components: the Dutch-language online Dental Trauma Guide, which supports oral healthcare professionals step by step in diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, and the KIMO Dental Trauma guideline, which describes the organization of dental emergency care. The KIMO guideline is supplemented by additional documents, such as splinting instructions, a patient s medical history form, and a dental trauma telephone card. This guideline replaces the 2010 KNMT guideline and includes clear agreements on a

More than 1 billion people worldwide have hypertension. Since the guidelines for classification and treatment of hypertension were updated in 2017 by American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association, it is now estimated that nearly half of the US adult population has hypertension. Hypertension may not show any sign or symptom apart from an elevated blood pressure reading until signs and symptoms of complications occur. Hence, dentists can play a unique role in identifying undiagnosed patients or those with uncontrolled blood pressure levels. This article is intended to provide dental

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur in the dental practice. There are a number of dental-related causes including mouthwashes, local anaesthetics, latex and antibiotics. The dental team must be able to respond effectively and manage the life-threatening situation appropriately following Resuscitation Council UK guidelines. The timely administration of adrenaline is life-saving; any delays can lead to a poor outcome. With the current national supply issues with adrenaline auto-injector devices, there is an expectation that GDPs should be com

Breakage of a dental needle is a rare but significant complication of local anaesthetic injections, which causes great anxiety for the patient and dental surgeon, and necessitates investigations and further treatment. It may have important medico-legal considerations. We describe a case where a dental needle broke during the routine administration of an inferior alveolar nerve block for a dental procedure. This broken needle subsequently migrated to the lateral aspect of the neck, confirming that these 'migrations' do occur. We discuss the various causes, and clinical and dentolegal implicatio

Reputation is one of the most significant aspects of an organization. It plays a crucial role in Dentistry and Ophthalmology, significantly influencing the relationship between doctors and patients. Reputation management in these two fields is viewed as a strategic process through which dentists and ophthalmologists can establish patients' trust, thereby ensuring high-quality services and patient satisfaction. The study conducted in this paper aimed to analyze patients' opinions on how the reputation of medical offices and trust in ophthalmologists and dentists influence their decision to choo

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review aimed to give an overview of the current evidence surrounding the aetiology and management in terms of treatment and prevention of syncope in dental practices. Alongside the occurrence, the practitioner's competence, and the association between syncope and local anaesthetics were discussed.
METHODS: An electronic search in EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane databases and a hand search were performed by 2 independent reviewers to identify studies up to November 2019. Eligibility criteria were applied and relevant data was extracted. Inclusion criteria

Acute dislocation of the temporomandibular joint is a situation that, although rare, may present to the dentist in practice at any time. A number of activities, such as removal of a tooth, may cause dislocation. The event is painful and distressing for the patient, their family and the dental team. Prompt management minimises discomfort, distress and long-term morbidity to the patient. We describe the aetiology of acute dislocation and outline a number of techniques that will aid the clinican in dealing with this event.

Smoking and smokeless tobacco can cause significant damage to the oral cavity, including life-threatening cancers. Consequently, dentists and their office staffs should and can play an influential role in advising their patients to quit using tobacco. The National Cancer Institute has developed the "Four A's" approach to tobacco-cessation counseling: (1) ask about tobacco use; (2) advise to quit; (3) assist with quitting; and (4) arrange for follow-up. With minimal expenditures of treatment time, the dentist and office staff can encourage patients to quit using tobacco through nonconfrontation

UNLABELLED: Dento-alveolar trauma presents commonly in general dental practice, but may prove difficult to manage for those unfamiliar with it. Timely and well-informed intervention can significantly improve the clinical outcome for the patient. This article aims to inform the clinician on best current practice for the assessment and initial management of dental traumatic injuries, incorporating current international guidelines and practical arrangements for follow-up care.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The dental trauma patient often presents to the general dental practitioner and the appropriate emer

UNLABELLED: In the second of two papers on the diagnosis and management of medical emergencies, the measures needed to manage specific medical emergencies are discussed. Each emergency requires a correct diagnosis for effective and safe management. Signs and symptoms are highlighted at the beginning of each section describing patient management. The basis of management in contemporary dental practice avoids the intravenous route of drug administration, where drugs are required.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: All dental practitioners require a knowledge of the management of specific medical emergencies.

Temporomandibular disorder is a broad term encompassing pain and/or dysfunction of the masticatory musculature and the temporomandibular joints. Pain arising from a temporomandibular disorder is a common reason for seeking dental care. It is essential that dental practitioners are able to accurately diagnose and manage this condition. Identifying people at highest risk of developing a temporomandibular disorder and knowing which procedures are more likely to initiate or exacerbate a temporomandibular disorder, are important to reduce the likelihood of its acute and chronic presentation. The ai

Cleft lip and palate is a severe birth defect occurring approximately one in 800-1000 newborn infants. The incidence varies widely among races. Cleft lip and palate together account for approximately 50% of all cases whereas isolated cleft lip and isolated cleft palate occur in about 25% of cases. Many of these congenital anomalies appear to be genetically determined though the majority are of unknown causes or teratogenic influences. Presented here is a 3 day old infant with bilateral cleft lip and palate and phocomelia for whom a feeding obturator was made and delivered to facilitate feeding

OBJECTIVE: In the United States, on average, every 15 s, someone visits a hospital emergency department (ED) for a dental condition. This commentary summarizes the recommendations from a 2024 clinical practice guideline for the pharmacological management of acute dental pain associated with tooth extractions and toothache applicable to ED settings, hospitals, and urgent care clinics where definitive dental treatment is not immediately available.
METHODS: A guideline panel convened by the American Dental Association, the ADA Science & Research Institute, the University of Pittsburgh School of

OBJECTIVE: Foreign body aspiration is a possible complication of dental treatment that may result in a life-threatening situation. The foreign body is often spontaneously ejected from the airway, but in other cases, surgical intervention is needed. Prevention, diagnostic procedures, treatment and complications are discussed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three cases of aspiration of dental instruments are described: the piece was localised in the right main bronchus in two cases and in the left main bronchus in one case.
RESULTS: All three cases underwent surgery (resection and bronchoscopy); in on

BACKGROUND: Salivary dysfunction in Sjögren disease can lead to serious and costly oral health complications. Clinical practice guidelines for caries prevention in Sjögren disease were developed to improve quality and consistency of care.
METHODS: A national panel of experts devised clinical questions in a Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes format and included use of fluoride, salivary stimulants, antimicrobial agents, and nonfluoride remineralizing agents. The panel conducted a systematic search of the literature according to pre-established parameters. At least 2 members extract
