Physician's practice patterns for chronic prostatitis.

Chronic prostatitis (CP) is one of the most prevalent conditions in urology, yet the most poorly understood. Although there is little controversy regarding the therapy for documented acute bacterial infections, most symptomatic men do not have bacterial prostatitis, for which treatment and management are usually successful. Throughout the past century, the diagnostic entity of CP has been recognised and its clinical characteristics have been well described. However, no hard and fast guidelines have been developed. To date, several surveys of physicians have been undertaken in order to examine

Practice Patterns of Physicians who Perform Caudal Epidural Steroid Injections.

INTRODUCTION: Caudal epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly employed in the management of low back pain and radiculopathy. Despite their widespread use, practice patterns among physicians performing caudal ESIs can vary significantly. This study aims to identify variability in injection techniques utilized by physicians during caudal ESIs, focusing on steroid use, needle selection, and catheter use. This study also looks at major permanent neurological injuries related to caudal ESIs. METHODS: A survey was distributed to a cohort of physicians who regularly perform ESIs. The survey c

Practice Patterns of Physicians Who Perform Lumbar Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TFESIs) are a widely used interventional procedure for managing lumbosacral radicular pain and other spinal conditions. TFESIs help reduce inflammation and enhance function by delivering corticosteroids into the nerve root and epidural space. The transforaminal approach is commonly utilized for its precise targeting, offering both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits. Furthermore, this technique can be performed in patients with a history of laminectomy or contraindications to performing an interlaminar approach at the target

Practice patterns of infectious disease physicians for management of meningococcal disease.

BACKGROUND: Although empiric treatment regimens for acute bacterial meningitis are well established, there are many uncertainties regarding management of meningococcal disease. A survey was conducted among infectious disease specialists to assess meningococcal disease practice patterns and availability of antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Neisseria menigitidis. METHODS: An online survey was distributed to 1342 pediatric and adult infectious disease specialists to assess common practices and opinions regarding the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of meningococcal disease. Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians' practice patterns for 22-week delivery management.

OBJECTIVE: To describe Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians' practice patterns for 22-week delivery management. MEHODS: Surveyed 750 randomly-sampled members of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, querying MFMs' practices and policies guiding 22-week delivery management. RESULTS: Three hundred and twenty-five (43%) MFMs responded. Nearly all (87%) would offer induction. Twenty-eight percent would order steroids, and 12% would perform cesarean for a patient desiring resuscitation. Offering induction differed significantly based on the provider's practice setting, region, religious ser

Practice Patterns and Perspectives on Epidural Steroid Injections by Interventional Pain Physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used to manage chronic spinal pain. However, variations in ESI practices remain prevalent among interventional pain physicians. This study evaluates current practice patterns and perceptions of ESI efficacy to identify areas for potential standardization in clinical application. METHODS: A structured survey was distributed to interventional pain physicians via email and social media outlets, collecting data on several aspects of ESI practice: (1) the importance of precise injectate placement, (2) perceived effectiveness for axial v

Practice Patterns of Family Physicians With and Without Addiction Medicine Board Certification.

BACKGROUND: The American Board of Medical Specialties recognized addiction medicine (ADM) as a subspecialty in 2016, which was timely given the recent rise in substance use disorder (SUD). The impact of this dual board opportunity on Family Medicine has not been described. Our study enumerates and characterizes physicians dually certified in Family Medicine and ADM. METHODS: We linked American Board of Medical Specialties data from March 2020 on physicians dually boarded in Family Medicine and ADM to responses on demographic and scope of practice questions in the American Board of Family Medi

Practice patterns for expanded carrier screening among reproductive endocrinology and infertility physicians.

PURPOSE: Expanded carrier screening (ECS) is a commonly used preconception screening test, especially in fertility practices given available interventions to mitigate risks of genetic disease among offspring. However, little is known about the implementation of ECS by Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) physicians. This study assessed ECS practices among REI physicians in the United States (U.S.) and physician or clinic factors associated with requiring patients' ECS to result prior to initiating any fertility treatment (in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination). Practice patterns of screening for sleep apnea in physicians treating PCOS patients.

Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have been shown to have a very high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Screening for OSA is recommended for PCOS patients. How far this is carried out in actual practice is unknown. To study practice patterns with regard to screening for OSA in physicians-both obstetrician/gynecologists (ObGyn) and endocrinologist-who manage PCOS. A secondary aim of this study was to identify practice differences, if any. Two hundred ObGyn and 140 endocrine academic institutions were contacted and mailed with questionnaires, if willing to participate. Res

Carotid endarterectomy in a community hospital: a change in physicians' practice patterns.

A total of 243 consecutive carotid endarterectomies (CEA) performed at Providence Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, were retrospectively reviewed over a 22-month period. Of these, 137 patients (56%) underwent CEA for asymptomatic disease, 52 (37%) of whom had stenotic lesions of 79% or less. There were 6 deaths (3%) and 12 strokes (5%). Four strokes were in asymptomatic patients. These data prompted development of criteria for CEA: (1) hemisphere-specific transient ischemic attacks, reversible ischemic neurologic deficits, or amaurosis fugax with an appropriate carotid lesion; (2) completed

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to compare the use of the Iowa Expanded Serum Screening program (maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin, and unconjugated estriol) by obstetricians and family physicians. STUDY DESIGN: A registry was used to identify all obstetricians (160) and family physicians (404) who practice obstetrics in Iowa. A questionnaire exploring attitudes and practice patterns related to serum screening was mailed to these physicians. RESULTS: The response rate was 80.3% overall. There were significant differences in the offering of serum screening (p < 0.001)

Practice patterns among primary care physicians in benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although patients with prostate disorders are frequently referred to urologists for diagnosis and management, primary care physicians (PCPs) are beginning to take a more active role. However, there is concern that PCPs are not optimally educated in the diagnosis and management of these disorders. This survey determined PCP practice patterns in evaluating and treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and screening for prostate cancer. METHODS: A 10-question survey was completed by 344 physicians attending various scientific meetings in 1995. RESULTS: Most PCPs (89
