Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a highly variable genetic disorder affecting multiple body systems whose most consistent major manifestations include hypotonia with poor suck and poor weight gain in infancy; mild mental retardation, hypogonadism, growth hormone insufficiency causing short stature for the family, early childhood-onset hyperphagia and obesity, characteristic appearance, and behavioral and sometimes psychiatric disturbance. Many more minor characteristics can be helpful in diagnosis and important in management. PWS is an example of a genetic condition involving genomic imprinting.

BACKGROUND: First described in 1956, Prader-Willi syndrome is a neurogenetic condition characterized by infantile hypotonia, hypogonadism and obesity. Mental deficiency, behavioral abnormalities, and obvious dysmorphic features are frequently found as well. It is a relatively common condition, with an incidence estimated to be between 1 in 10,000 to 25,000 live births. Few studies have been published that investigated the ocular defects associated with this syndrome.
METHODS: This case report discusses the systemic and oculo-visual abnormalities of a 34-year-old white male enrolled in the Eas

Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, affecting 1 out of 25,000 births, in which a critical region of chromosome 15, the 15q11-q13 region, is affected. At birth, PWS infants exhibit severe hypotonia that partially improves, explaining in part suckling and swallowing troubles and the delay in psychomotor development. Characteristic facial features (dysmorphic syndrome) and very small hands and feet are frequently observed at this age. After this initial phase, the most striking signs appear: hyperphagia and absence of satiety often leading to severe obesity in affected children as y

Five cases of Prader-Willi syndrome were found in an inbred south Louisiana family. Pedigree data strongly support autosomal recessive inheritance of the syndrome in this family.

Prader-Labhart-Willi Syndrome is a complex, multisystem sporadic disorder which presents during childhood and proceeds into adulthood. The major features include infantile hypotonia, developmental delay, hypogonadism with abnormal sexual maturation, mental retardation and behavior abnormalities, short stature with small hands and feet, massive obesity with diabetes mellitus, dysmorphic facial features, and marked dental caries and enamel hypoplasia. Recently, a deletion of chromosome 15 has been found in a large percentage of these patients, but the exact cause and genetic transmission has not

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 1 in 20,000 individuals worldwide. Symptom progression in PWS is classically characterized by two nutritional stages. Stage 1 is hypotonia characterized by poor muscle tone that leads to poor feeding behavior causing failure to thrive in early neonatal life. Stage 2 is followed by the development of extreme hyperphagia, also known as insatiable eating and fixation on food that often leads to obesity in early childhood. Other major features of PWS include obsessive-compulsive and hoarding behaviors, int

Prader-Willi syndrome is characterized by eating abnormalities, infantile hypotonia, obesity, mental retardation, and hypogonadism. The causation of hypogonadism varies. We describe a patient with Prader-Willi syndrome whose hypogonadism is secondary to a hypothalamic defect. Individualization of patients with this syndrome is suggested. Based on the particular hormonal abnormality identified, a treatment plan can be constructed. Cryptorchidism should be approached in the usual fashion.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder linked to the lack of expression of specific maternally imprinted genes located in the chromosomal region 15q11-q13. Impaired hypothalamic development and function explain most of the phenotype that is characterized by a specific trajectory from anorexia at birth to excessive weight gain at later ages, which is accompanied by hyperphagia and early severe obesity, as well as by other hormonal deficiencies, behavioral deficits, and dysautonomia. In almost all patients, their endocrine dysfunction involves growth hormone de

A review of a case series of sixteen anaesthetics in eight cases was undertaken to determine whether children with Prader-Willi syndrome present particular problems to the anaesthetist. Children in an early stage of the condition who are below their centile for weight present no specific problems. Children who are heavier than 97th centile weight have problems associated with their obesity: difficult intravenous access and sleep apnoea. Scoliosis was noted in both groups and was not associated with problems after minor surgery.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is associated with an insatiable appetite and (often) other maladaptive behaviours (self-injury, sleep disorders, insistence on routines, and temper tantrums). Psychoses are not a recognised feature. Most affected people have a chromosome 15 abnormality (deletion, disomy, structural rearrangement, etc.). Three people with PWS who developed psychotic disorders in early adult life are described. The nature of the psychoses and the significance of the association are discussed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper reviews how sleep is impacted in patients with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), focusing on sleep-related breathing disturbances and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).
RECENT FINDINGS: Hypothalamic dysfunction may underlie several aspects of the PWS phenotype. Central sleep apnea (CSA) can persist beyond infancy. Nocturnal hypoventilation is common and may occur without central or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Adenotonsillectomy, a mainstay of OSA treatment, may cause velopharyngeal insufficiency. Growth hormone (GH) is considered safe, but close surveillance for O

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by hypotonia and poor feeding in infancy which progresses to hyperphagia in early-mid childhood, as well as developmental delays, a spectrum of behavioral and psychiatric concerns, endocrinopathies, orthopedic issues, and less commonly, seizures, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy with or without cataplexy. This study used data in the Global PWS Registry (N = 893) to explore the onset and severity over time of the neuropsychiatric features reported in individuals with PWS and explored its associations with sleep disorders, seizures, and

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is the most common cause of genetic obesity. Hyperphagia and obe sity are the most associated concepts with this condition. However, undernutrition secondary to severe hypotonia and feeding difficulties is the predominant initial feature.
OBJECTIVE: to reprodu ce and communicate the nutritional phases on a series of Chilean cases with PWS.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Cross-sectional study in which clinical records of PWS individuals under nutritional con trol at the Clínica Santa María in Santiago, Chile between 2017 and 2018 were analyzed. The anthro pomet

Prader-Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by chromosomal changes in segment 15q11-q13 including cognitive, mental, and behavioral symptoms, as well as a specific physical phenotype. Both the most common psychopathological changes (intellectual disability, obsessions, impulsivity, autism spectrum disorders, self-injuries) and the main psychiatric comorbidities (affective disorders, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorder) are characterized by a great heterogeneity, which warrants the need for better identification of their frequency and clinical signs. Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a multisystemic genetic disease associated with structural, behavioral, and intellectual disorders. The clinical appearance of PWS includes dysmorphic facial features with almond-shaped eyes, a narrow bifrontal diameter, and a thin upper lip; short stature; central obesity; and small hands and feet. We present a case of a 27-year-old woman with PWS and describe the typical clinical features and cutaneous manifestations of PWS.

Prader-Willi syndrome is a neurologic disorder caused by a mutation on chromosome 15. It is characterized by short stature, obesity, mild-to-moderate mental retardation, and multiple behavior problems including mood, self-abusive behavior, and compulsive-eating disorder. These behaviors have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of patients with Prader-Willi syndrome. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a new antiepileptic medication, topiramate, on behavior, mood, and compulsive-eating disorder associated with Prader-Willi syndrome. Recent studies have indicated that top

We report an infant with severe hypotonia, feeding problems and failure to thrive in the neonatal period, followed by developmental delay. In addition, pale skin, eyelid and pedal edema, cryptorchidism and micrognathia were present. The tentative diagnosis of Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome was made and confirmed by specific molecular testing at the age of 5 months. The Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome is usually diagnosed in older infants when the main clinical features such as obesity, short stature, hypogonadism and developmental delay become obvious, in most of the patients typical clinical fea
