Predictive deep learning models for cognitive risk using accessible data.

The early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is crucial to preventing the progression of dementia. However, it necessitates that patients voluntarily undergo cognitive function tests, which may be too late if symptoms are only recognized once they become apparent. Recent advances in deep learning have improved model performance, leading to applied research in various predictive problems. Studies attempting to estimate dementia and the risk of MCI based on readily available data are being conducted, with the hope of facilitating the early detection of MCI. The data used for these pred

Explainable Machine Learning Predictive Models for Surgical Site Infections: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a major cause of health care-associated infections, and early prediction is essential for improving patient outcomes. Machine learning (ML) has shown potential for SSI prediction; however, clinical implementation requires models that are both accurate and explainable. Despite recent progress in explainable ML, its clinical application to SSI prediction remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to map explainable ML models for SSI prediction from a clinical perspective and examine their use of structured and unstructured data across the dim

Machine learning models in predictive factors for megaloblastic character of macrocytic anemia.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating megaloblastic from non-megaloblastic macrocytic anemia usually relies on vitamin B12 and/or B9 assessment and bone marrow examination. In resource-limited regions, these diagnostic tools are not readily available. This study aims to develop a machine learning model to distinguish between these two forms of macrocytic anemia using commonly accessible clinical and laboratory parameters. METHODS: A logistic regression model was developed using a dataset containing clinical features and routine laboratory data. Key predictive variables were identified through the Seque

Comparison of Machine Learning Models for Colon Cancer Survival: Predictive Modeling Approach.

BACKGROUND: Colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with survival influenced by risk factors, treatment type, and patient characteristics. Traditional statistical models, such as Kaplan-Meier curves, have been widely used to estimate survival probabilities. However, these models often have difficulty handling complex interactions, covariates, and nonlinear relationships between risk factors. Recently, machine learning (ML) techniques have emerged as promising tools for improving survival prediction by handling large covariates and capturing complex patterns. OBJECT

Identifying predictive hematological biomarkers for radiation exposure by machine learning in mouse models.

BACKGROUND: Population-scale radiation exposure assessment during radiological emergencies is hindered by the slow and costly nature of current methods, creating a need for rapid, affordable screening tools. Radiation biodosimetry using peripheral blood counts is a promising approach, but estimating low-dose exposures and exposure at extended time points remains challenging, especially when accounting for inter-individual differences in radiation sensitivity. METHODS: We analyze complete blood count (CBC) profiles from a retrospective cohort of 1151 male and female BALB/cJ and C57BL/6 J mice

Integrating radiomics into predictive models for low nuclear grade DCIS using machine learning.

Predicting low nuclear grade DCIS before surgery can improve treatment choices and patient care, thereby reducing unnecessary treatment. Due to the high heterogeneity of DCIS and the limitations of biopsies in fully characterizing tumors, current diagnostic methods relying on invasive biopsies face challenges. Here, we developed an ensemble machine learning model to assist in the preoperative diagnosis of low nuclear grade DCIS. We integrated preoperative clinical data, ultrasound images, mammography images, and Radiomic scores from 241 DCIS cases. The ensemble model, based on Elastic Net, Gen

Separating predictive accuracy from functional behaviour in machine-learning surrogate models for geoengineering applications.

Machine-learning regression models are increasingly used as surrogate parameterisations in geoengineering workflows, where they function as continuous mappings across predictor domains rather than as pointwise predictors. However, model evaluation remains dominated by predictive accuracy metrics, which provide limited insight into surrogate behaviour between observations. This study demonstrates that predictive accuracy and functional behaviour represent distinct and complementary dimensions of surrogate adequacy. Using a controlled laboratory dataset describing thermal conductivity as a funct

HIV-integrase is an important drug target because it catalyzes chromosomal integration of proviral DNA towards establishing latent infection. Computer-aided drug design has immensely contributed to identifying and developing novel antiviral drugs. We have developed various machine learning-based predictive models for identifying high activity compounds against HIV-integrase. Multiclass models were built using support vector machine with reasonable accuracy on the test and evaluation sets. The developed models were evaluated by rigorous validation approaches and the best features were selected
