Neoplasms during the progression of pregnancy.

Restricting this review to dealing with pregnancy and its interaction with neoplasms limits us to the child-bearing years. Neoplasms may appear at all stages of species with true tissues and the incidence of malignancy in pregnancy is estimated to be 1:1,000. Almost 50% of these tumors are cervical cancers, followed by breast cancer, with an incidence of approximately 0.03%. The pregnant woman, in the same person, exhibits controlled growth (the pregnancy) and uncontrolled growth (the malignancy). In younger women, the neoplasms represent early stages of biological development and seem to aris

The defunctionalized bladder.

Supravesical urinary diversion without cystectomy is a common procedure performed to manage a variety of lower urinary tract pathologies. The purpose of this article is to review the complications associated with the bladder left in situ and to relate this to the female patient. Complications related to the defunctionalized bladder include pyocystis, hemorrhage, pain/spasm and neoplastic transformation. The defunctionalized bladder also has implications for sexual function, pregnancy and undiversion. The risk factors for complications are chronic infection, inadequate drainage, interstitial cy

Bilateral Pregnancy Luteoma Presenting as Acute Abdomen in a Young Female: A Case Report.

Pregnancy luteoma (PL) is a rare, non-neoplastic ovarian lesion that can mimic malignant ovarian tumors, posing significant diagnostic challenges. PL typically presents as asymptomatic, unilateral, or bilateral ovarian masses and is often discovered incidentally. Its development is linked to hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, particularly elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels. While PL generally resolves postpartum, complications such as torsion may necessitate surgical intervention. We report the case of a 23-year-old primigravida presenting with acute abdominal pain, vomiti

Cancer During Pregnancy: Navigating Clinical and Research Challenges.

The incidence of cancer during pregnancy is rising, yet scientific understanding and clinical management remain underdeveloped. Delayed diagnoses, limited therapeutic options, and lack of safety data exacerbate the clinical challenges of treating cancer during pregnancy. Further, the biology of gestational cancers is poorly understood due to the scarcity of model systems and mechanistic studies. This manuscript presents a multidisciplinary perspective from a group of researchers and clinicians to evaluate the current state of pregnancy-associated cancers, identify unmet clinical and biological

Pituitary disorders and pregnancy.

In conclusion, the physiologic changes that occur in the pituitary during pregnancy make women harboring pituitary tumors more vulnerable to tumor complications, namely tumor expansion resulting in either visual defects or hormone deficiencies. Fortunately, vast experience with the most common of these tumors (prolactinomas) allows us to make specific recommendations to women with such tumor embarking upon pregnancy. These recommendations have been outlined. In addition to tumors, the anterior lobe of the pituitary may be the seat of two rare conditions (Sheehan's syndrome and lymphocytic hypo

Lymphoma Occurring During Pregnancy: Current Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pregnancy-associated lymphoma (PAL) is an uncommon entity that lacks detailed prospective data. It poses significant management challenges that incorporate maternal and fetal risks associated with treatment or delayed intervention. Herein, we review the current literature for the diagnosis, management, and supportive care strategies for PAL. RECENT FINDINGS: Establishment of a multidisciplinary team, including hematology-oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, and neonatology, is critical in the management of PAL. For staging, ultrasound and MRI are preferred modalities with use

Comprehensive review of pregnancy associated breast cancer: Clinical features, molecular characteristics and novel therapies.

Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer (PABC) accounts for pregnancy-related breast cancer (PrBC), occurring during pregnancy and the first postpartum year, and postpartum breast cancer (PPBC), arising up to 5-10 years after childbirth. It represents an increasingly oncological challenge as delayed childbearing trends extend maternal reproductive age. Occurring in approximately 1:3000 pregnancies, PABC accounts for 0.2-3.8 % of all breast cancer cases. PABC is often associated with aggressive clinic-biological characteristics, including higher prevalence of triple-negative subtypes, increased lymp

The prognostic impact of pregnancy-associated melanoma on overall and melanoma-specific survival: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated melanoma (PAM) - melanoma diagnosed during pregnancy or within 12 months postpartum - raises concern that physiological immune adaptations may worsen tumour outcomes, yet whether PAM independently confers worse survival remains unresolved. METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov for observational studies comparing survival in PAM versus non-PAM women reporting adjusted hazard ratios. Risk of bias was assessed with ROBINS-E. Four pre-specified random-effects meta-analyses (REML; Hartung-Knapp adjustment) were strati

Diagnosis and Treatment of Gestational Non-Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ovarian cancer is categorized into epithelial ovarian cancer and non-epithelial ovarian cancer (NEOC), with NEOC accounting for approximately 10% of cases, predominantly affecting young women and adolescents. The incidence of gestational ovarian cancer is expected to rise in developed nations due to delayed childbearing. NEOC in pregnancy presents various risks, including spontaneous abortion, ventriculomegaly, respiratory distress, and maternal-fetal mortality. This review aims to evaluate the diagnostic tools and management strategies for early NEOC detection during pregnancy

Oral cancer in pregnancy: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Oral cancers in pregnancy (OCiP) are rare, however when diagnosed it complicates both the treatment of cancer and the outcome of pregnancy. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the factors impacting the foetal and maternal outcome in OCiP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was performed on the following electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. Only histopathologically diagnosed cases of oral cancer in pregnant patients were included. The Joanna Briggs Institute questionnaire for case reports was used to assess the risk of bias. Logis

Obstetrical prevention of human cancers. Review article.

Cancer appears in the new form of cell life as a direct consequence of self-organising pre-cancer cells (dissipathogenic systems), whose further existence is disabled by extreme impairment of their metabolism. Life itself is the highest value, since instead of necrosis or apoptosis, the cellular system in an unfavourable environment can change its genetic identity provided that the improvement in its own metabolism leads to increased chaos by higher dissipation of matter and energy in its environment. Prolongation of human life has resulted by a longer period of old age which is favourable for

Prevention and management of infectious diseases in pregnant women with haematological malignancies.

The incidence of haematological malignancies during pregnancy ranges from 4·0 to 15·8 cases per 100 000 pregnancies, with Hodgkin lymphoma, acute leukaemia, and aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma being the most frequent subtypes. Although survival rates are similar to those in patients who are not pregnant with similar disease profiles, pregnant women face higher risks of maternal morbidity, along with adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Their management, therefore, requires a carefully balanced approach that minimises obstetric risks and ensures effective oncological control. Physiol

Haematological malignancies in pregnancy: An overview with an emphasis on thrombotic risks.

With increase of maternal age, the incidence of haematological malignancies during pregnancy is rising and posing diagnostic and treatment challenges. Lymphoma is the fourth most common malignancy diagnosed in pregnancy; Hodgkin lymphoma is more frequent in pregnant women than non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The proportion of highly aggressive lymphomas in pregnant women is significantly higher than in non-pregnant women of reproductive age. Reproductive organ involvement is observed in almost half of pregnant women with NHL. The association of acute leukaemia and pregnancy is infrequent and it is

Expert Opinion on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hematologic Malignancies During Pregnancy.

The diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies has undergone significant advancements over the past few decades, resulting in enhanced outcomes. For hematologic malignancies diagnosed during pregnancy, this poses new questions. As possibilities continue to expand and the rising global incidence results in an increasing number of diagnoses within the pregnant population, there is a pressing need to gain a deeper understanding of the potential options for pregnant women and the impact on the newborn. As knowledge of the effects of cancer treatment increases, more women are receiving ade

Imaging of Headache in Pregnancy.

Pregnant women are most likely to have primary headaches, such as migraine and tension-type headaches, which can be diagnosed and treated without brain imaging. Primary headaches may even start de novo during pregnancy, especially in the first few months. However, when the headache occurs late in pregnancy or in the peripartum period, secondary causes of headaches need to be considered and evaluated by brain and/or vascular imaging, generally using magnetic resonance techniques. There is considerable overlap between the cerebrovascular complications of pregnancy, including preeclampsia/eclamps

Postpartum Acute Liver Dysfunction: A Case of Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy Developing Massive Intrahepatic Calcification.

The function of the liver is particularly affected by the unique physiologic milieu of the pregnancy. Pregnancy-related liver diseases encompass a spectrum of different etiologies that are related to gestation or one of its complications. Hepatic calcification, a rare entity, is usually associated with infectious, vascular, or neoplastic lesions in the liver. To the best of our knowledge, only one case of rapidly occurring pregnancy-related intrahepatic calcification has been documented in a patient with severe eclampsia or hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count (HELLP) syndr
