Prenatal education for congenital toxoplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital toxoplasmosis is considered a rare but potentially severe infection. Prenatal education about congenital toxoplasmosis could be the most efficient and least harmful intervention, yet its effectiveness is uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of prenatal education for preventing congenital toxoplasmosis. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (31 May 2015), and reference lists of relevant papers, reviews and websites. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials of all types of prenatal

Impact of Prenatal Group Healthy Relationship Education on Postpartum Contraception.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the impact of an antenatal group healthy relationship education program on the postpartum use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a planned subgroup analysis of a larger randomized controlled trial. Pregnant and newly parenting women were randomized to either group healthy relationship education, "MotherWise," or no additional services. An evidence-based healthy relationship education program and individual case management sessions were provided. The program did not include any prenatal care or contraception counseling

The effectiveness of a prenatal education programme for the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis.

A 10 min education programme was developed which, if effective in changing the behaviour of pregnant women, would eliminate or greatly reduce the risk of congenital toxoplasmosis. It was taught in 26 randomly selected (case) prenatal classes offered to women early in their pregnancy. The remaining 26 (control) classes received routine class material which did not mention toxoplasmosis. A questionnaire was administered to all women prior to this early class (pre-test) and again after the last prenatal class, held just prior to delivery (post-test). Changes in pet, food and personal hygiene beha

Psychopathology and special education enrollment in children with prenatal cocaine exposure.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated how enrollment in special education services in 11-year-old children relates to prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE), psychopathology, and other risk factors. METHODS: Participants were 498 children enrolled in The Maternal Lifestyle Study, a prospective, longitudinal, multisite study examining outcomes of children with PCE. Logistic regression was used to examine the effect of PCE and psychopathology on enrollment in an individualized education plan (IEP; a designation specific to children with special education needs), with environmental, maternal, and infant medi

The Role of Resiliency Education in Prenatal Classes on Maternal Mental Health.

PURPOSE: Pregnant women with low incomes and racial/ethnic minorities experience higher rates of maternal depression and anxiety, which negatively impact maternal and infant well-being. Racial minorities experience increased stress due to social factors and ongoing systemic inequalities in the United States. To address these disparities, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LACDHS) developed a novel prenatal education and support curriculum that incorporated resilience-building to deliver in-person, interactive prenatal education content. METHODS: An evidence-based resilience

Incorporating HIV education and counseling into routine prenatal care: a program model.

This article reports how a prenatal clinic in a major urban teaching hospital has developed and integrated an HIV education and counseling program into routine prenatal care. The patient population served are predominantly minority women living in an inner-city community that has been disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic. Implementation of the patient program has required training and support for all professional staff. Staff training served as a foundation for this comprehensive patient program, which has reached all prenatal patients regardless of risk behavior. The program has s

Prenatal education outcomes for pregnant adolescents and their infants using trained volunteers.

This study evaluated the effects of lessons taught by trained nonprofessional volunteers in community prenatal clinics. Project participants (n = 210) and comparison subjects (n = 189) were pregnant women, aged 18 years or younger. Participants were divided according to those who attended eight or more lessons (high treatment, n = 94) and those who attended fewer lessons (n = 116). A system of rewards for attendance was used. The number of prenatal visits was significantly different between the three groups (p less than 0.001), with the high-treatment participants having a significantly greate

Prenatal exposure to antihypertensive medication: A systematic review of neurodevelopmental and educational outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Where possible, medication is avoided during pregnancy as it can cross the placenta and potentially cause congenital malformations, impair growth and have longer-term functional or cognitive sequelae. However, medication is sometimes required for pre-existing or new-onset conditions such as hypertension disorders during pregnancy; the longer-term outcomes of which remain unclear. This systematic review aimed to synthesise the evidence on prenatal exposure to antihypertensive medication and longer-term neurodevelopmental and educational outcomes up to 18 years of age. METHODS: We s

Virtual, Augmented, Mixed, and Immersive Technologies for Prenatal and Childbirth Education: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Virtual, augmented, mixed, and other immersive technologies, collectively referred to as extended reality (XR), are increasingly used to enhance experiential learning in health education. By creating interactive 3-dimensional or 360° environments, these technologies allow expectant parents to engage in realistic prenatal and childbirth scenarios, promoting emotional preparedness, knowledge acquisition, and confidence. Although XR has been widely studied in clinical training, its application in prenatal and childbirth education for parents remains less systematically explored. OBJE

Influence of patient-centered prenatal education on the birth experience: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is a complex, subjective phenomenon, the significance of which is influenced by sociocultural and individual factors. Anxieties surrounding childbirth, often stemming from gaps in knowledge about the physiological process, can negatively affect maternal expectations. Prenatal health education has been proposed as a key intervention to mitigate these anxieties by enhancing self-efficacy, promoting patient autonomy, and encouraging active participation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate women's perceptions of their labor and childbirth experience following partic

Innovative Prenatal Care for Diabetes in Pregnancy: Integrating Technology, Education, and Care Models.

Over the past few decades, the prevalence of diabetes in pregnancy has increased significantly necessitating innovative methods to optimize care for patients. Group prenatal care has emerged as a promising model in response to rising health care costs and declining patient satisfaction with traditional care approaches. Although traditionally used for low-risk patients, group prenatal care has expanded to pregnant patients with diabetes. The role of technology for diabetes in pregnancy has also expanded to include continuous glucose monitors, electronic data repositories, and remote glycemic mo
