OBJECTIVES: Although older adult prescription drug misuse (PDM) is associated with concerning consequences, stimulant PDM and poly- PDM involving multiple medication classes each remain understudied. Our objectives were to examine PDM and poly-PDM prevalence by medication class in US older adults and to identify the mental health, SUD, and health-related quality-of-life correlates of poly-PDM.
METHOD: Data were from adults 50 and older completing the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III, (N = 14,667). Prevalence of PDM and poly-PDM by medication class was estima

Few studies of prescription-drug misuse have taken into account the numbers of prescriptions dispensed for specific drugs. Using data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) and the National Prescription Audit, we calculated indices of drug misuse for specific prescription drugs that are used mainly in outpatient settings and are either benzodiazepines, barbiturates, other sedative-hypnotics, analgesics, or CNS stimulants. In 1983-1985 the drugs associated with the highest numbers of DAWN medical examiner-reported drug-misuse deaths were codeine, diazepam, propoxyphene, phenobarbital, and s

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse is widely acknowledged as a major public health issue in the United States. Surprisingly little research examines the association between prescription drug misuse and history of arrest among adults.
METHODS: We use data from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to examine this association. Arrest was self-reported and separated into three categories: any, property crime, or violent crime. Prescription drug misuse was defined as use without a prescription or solely for the feeling or experience caused by the drug. We looked at the misuse of any p

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse (PDM) is highly prevalent among youth in the U.S., and can have serious health consequences. Homeless youth are a particularly vulnerable population with high rates of substance use. However, PDM has not been studied in a sample comprised exclusively of homeless youth.
METHODS: A sample of 451 homeless youth recruited from drop-in centers in Los Angeles, CA, provided information on substance use, mental health, service utilization, trauma, and sexual risk behavior. Multivariable logistic regression assessed correlates of past month PDM.
RESULTS: Nearly 50

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and correlates of nonmedical prescription drug misuse (PDM) in a state population of youths in residential care for antisocial behavior.
METHOD: Interviews assessing substance use, psychiatric symptoms, antisocial traits/behavior, and traumatic life experiences were conducted with 723 Missouri youths. Participants were predominantly male (87.0%), averaged 15.5 (SD = 1.2) years of age, and constituted 97.7% of the service population sampled.
RESULTS: Overall, 314 youths (43.4%) reported lifetime PDM; 33.7%, 32.0%, and 11.2% had m

This study used three characteristics (i.e., motive, route of administration, and co-ingestion with alcohol) of nonmedical prescription drug misuse across four separate classes (i.e., pain, sedative/anxiety, sleeping, and stimulant medications) to examine subtypes and drug related problems. A Web survey was self-administered by a randomly selected sample of 3639 undergraduate students attending a large midwestern 4-year U.S. university. Self-treatment subtypes were characterized by motives consistent with the prescription drug's pharmaceutical main indication, oral only routes of administratio

Misuse of prescription drugs has been a growing problem in the United States affecting all age groups, including adolescents. Recent years have produced many advances in medical management of chronic pain, depression and anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Many of the medications used to treat these disorders, such as the opioids, benzodiazepines, and psychostimulants, also have potential for abuse and dependence. The challenge for the clinician today is to maximize safe and effective treatment with available medication, while preventing the diversion of prescribed medicatio

Misuse of prescription drugs and injection drug use has increased among young adults in the USA. Despite these upward trends, few studies have examined prescription drug misuse among young injection drug users (IDUs). A qualitative study was undertaken to describe current patterns of prescription drug misuse among young IDUs. Young IDUs aged 16-25 years who had misused a prescription drug, e.g., opioids, tranquilizers, or stimulants, at least three times in the past 3 months were recruited in 2008 and 2009 in Los Angeles (n = 25) and New York (n = 25). Informed by an ethno-epidemiological appr

AIM: To survey new patients, presenting to three drug clinics, on the patterns, usage and costs of prescription pharmaceuticals.
METHOD: Consecutive patients seen by the medical staff for assessment had a 7-day history recorded for prescription drug (PD) usage, and the associated costs of these from street sources.
RESULTS: There were 37 patients (26 males) with a mean age of 34 years (21-51). Ten reported using only intravenous (IV) morphine, at a median dose of 105 mg/day (40-600), at a mean cost of 56 cents/mg. Another 12 reported methadone as their sole opioid at a median dose of 50 mg/d

BACKGROUND: Based on 2018 national estimates, approximately 5-10% of youth between the ages of 12-17 report past year prescription drug misuse (PDM) in the United States. PDM among adolescents is associated with negative health outcomes and risk behaviors. The current study examined both the prevalence of PDM among diverse groups of adolescents and the association of alcohol and cigarette use with early PDM.
METHODS: Data came from the cross-sectional state-based 2018 Indiana Youth Survey of students from grades 6-12, ranging in age from 10 to 17 years (n = 80,926). Lifetime PDM, alcohol, and

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent controlled prescription drug misuse (PDM) co-occurs with significant consequences, including lower educational achievement, substance use disorder (SUD) symptoms, and psychopathology. Nonetheless, adolescent PDM sources and the prevalence of other substance use, SUD, and mental health outcomes associated with sources remain poorly understood.
METHOD: Data were from the 2009 to 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, including 103,920 adolescents (12-17 years of age). Six mutually exclusive sources were used: physician source only, theft/fake prescription only, frien

BACKGROUND: The U.S. is in the midst of a public health crisis related to drug overdose deaths. Largely responsible for the dramatic increase in overdose deaths is the misuse of prescription drugs such as opioids and benzodiazepines. While much research attention has focused on correlates of prescription drug misuse in recent years, notable gaps in the literature remain. The current research addresses one of these gaps by examining the relationship between disability status and prescription drug misuse.
METHOD: We examine data from the 2015 National Survey on Drug use and Health, a leading so

BACKGROUND: Among prescribers, bupropion is considered a substance of low misuse potential, with some studies showing lesser misuse potential than caffeine. However, several case reports exist of recreational bupropion misuse and diversion. Our goal is to understand at-risk populations, clinical courses, interventions, and outcomes after acute ingestion of bupropion via oral, intravenous route, and insufflation.
METHODS: The systematic review was registered with PROSPERO on August 5, 2023. We conducted a systematic literature search on July 30, 2023, utilizing 8 databases with the help of the

Background: Prescription drug misuse and its related risks are considered a worldwide public health issue. Current trends show that the extent of such phenomenon may not be limited to subjects with psychiatric disorders, as it also spreads to dance party and nightclub attendees, who often consume prescription drugs in combination with alcohol and psychoactive substances. This study aims to report the sociodemographic data and the psychiatric and clinical features of a sample of clubbers reporting prescription drugs use. Methods: Patients admitted to the psychiatry ward of the Can Misses Hospit

Prescription drug misuse is increasingly common in the United States. To date, little is known about how prescription drug misuse relates to negative parenting behaviors like child maltreatment, even though use of illicit drugs increases rates of both child neglect and physical abuse. This study used secondary data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS), a clustered national sample of families at high risk for both prescription drug misuse and child maltreatment (n = 2,917). Data from mothers who participated in the 9-year follow-up of this study were used to create logis

BACKGROUND: Prescription opioids are the most frequently misused class of prescription drugs amongst young adults. Initiation into prescription opioid misuse is an important public health concern since opioids are increasingly associated with drug dependence and fatal overdose. Descriptive data about initiation into prescription opioid misuse amongst young injection drug users (IDUs) are scarce.
METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken to describe patterns of initiation into prescription opioid misuse amongst IDUs aged 16-25 years. Those young IDUs who had misused a prescripti

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) are state-level databases that track and inform prescribing practices to reduce prescription drug diversion and misuse. To our knowledge, only three studies have examined the impact of PDMPs on opioid-related outcomes among adolescents, and none have focused on prescription pain medication misuse among adolescents.
METHODS: This study leveraged data from the 2019 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to explore the associations between five categories of PDMP dimensions and the prevalence of self-reported prescription pain medicat

Prescription drug misuse (PDM) has been on the rise since early 2000 and is now an international epidemic. Prescription drugs are easily accessible and perceived as less harmful, yet can lead to addiction and death. Women represent half of the world's population and pose a unique risk for PDM, including a greater burden of addiction and relapse. Despite this, no identified studies have methodically reviewed the literature exploring PDM among adult women. The authors searched four EBSCOhost and World Health Organization (WHO) Global Index Medicus databases and identified 93 articles (88 vs. fiv
