The purpose of this current paper is to give a simple update and overview about vaccinations for dental health care workers considering the new guidelines published in February 2014 by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. It is recommended to have at least a valid protection against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, varicella, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis. Dental health care workers are highly exposed and high risk carriers for inoculable diseases, therefore regular refreshment of vaccinations is necessary for public health and their own health.

As a result of 25--30 years of caries research practiced in Switzerland, a level for an effective caries prevention has been reached. The results are conclusive and show that at present the caries rate has been considerably reduced. An adequate and regular application of fluoride is the basis for an effective caries prevention. Other important measures are an optimal oral hygiene and a proper nutritional diet. In Switzerland, we are coming very near to the two aims set by WHO for the year 2000 in respect of healthy teeth, namely: a) half of the 5 years olds should be caries-free, b) 12 year ol

A preventive dentistry delivery system was developed for maximum effectiveness in private practice. Four new pit or fissure carious lesions developed in 20 patients who were 10 to 20 years old at the start of a two-year exploratory test; there were no new lesions of smooth surfaces. Of the incipient lesions that were under observation, no increase was observed in 23 of 26 pit or fissure lesions, 24 to 25 proximal and all of 26 buccal or lingual smooth surface lesions. In 33 patients 21 to 30 years old at the start of the test, no new lesions appeared and growth of the 142 incipient lesions app

Halitosis or bad breath is a problem that affects many people and its source is generally found in the oral cavity (intra-oral halitosis). Bacteria in the oral cavity produce volatile sulphur compounds such as hydrogen sulphide and methyl mercaptan that not only emit an unpleasant odour, but may also have toxic effects on the periodontal tissues. Good oral hygiene, a healthy periodontium and healthy teeth are the basis for the prevention of intra-oral halitosis and dentists and dental hygienists therefore play an essential role in its prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of (1) the risk perception of work-related infections in dentistry, (2) the vaccination status, (3) knowledge of the blood-borne pathogens and HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) as well as (4) use of personal protective equipment (PPE) (gloves, goggles, mask) among the staff and students of the Center of Dentistry and Oral Medicine (ZZMK [Carolinum]) of the Goethe University Frankfurt/Main.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All staff (dentists, dental assistants) and students of the ZZMK with direct contact to patients were asked to anonymously complete a questionnaire. The result

There is an abundance of dental professionals with work-related pain and dysfunction. Dentistry poses a huge challenge because of the ergonomics of dental work. The biggest risk factors are the awkward prolonged seated postures with no back support and the limited range of motion and isometric muscle contraction created by working in a confined area, namely the mouth. The following manuscript offers exercises that constitute a preventive program to target the typical problem areas of the dental professional--the neck, lower back and wrist/hand.

BACKGROUND: Dentists, in the practice of their profession, are exposed to infectious diseases (most commonly hepatitis and HIV), biological accidents involving needles or sharp instruments and chemical intoxication from disinfectants, cements or dental resins. Also, they may suffer musculoskeletal disorders due to bad ergonomic postures, hearing loss and eye splashes or vision loss due to curing light, intense artificial lighting from dental units and constant visual strain in a limited space. Moreover, mental illnesses have been detected such as psychological issues like stress, fatigue, burn

California has issued fish consumption advisories because of mercury in lakes, reservoirs, creeks, rivers, and bays. Mercury in these waterways leads to the formation of methylmercury, which is toxic and bioaccumulative. Dental practices and other health care settings contribute a portion of this mercury. Government agencies are implementing programs to reduce mercury pollution. Dentists can reduce their contributions by implementing best management practices. They may also consider using pretreatment technologies as more information becomes available about their use and effectiveness.

Dental team and dentist's office should not represent an infective risk of transfer of bacterial and viral infections for patients. As the number of such infections is on an increase, we have to take additional measures of precaution besides the standard hygienic ones. We will protect ourselves by continuous use of personal protective means (gloves, masks, glasses, caps) and proper hand hygiene, and our patients by use of disposable facilities (plastic glasses, suction-pumps for saliva, injection needles, syringes, paper napkins). After each patient, all accessories and surfaces that were in c

Dental caries is a disease that recently has undergone, and may still be undergoing, dramatic changes in distribution of incidence and prevalence. The most recent epidemiologic data available have been reviewed in this paper to illustrate that caries is becoming a disease primarily of pits and fissures, with less differentiation than previously acknowledged between fluoridated and fluoride-deficient areas. The present distribution of caries suggests that prevention may be accomplished more effectively through targeted sealant programs than through currently popular mass preventive programs. Ex

The new Dutch clinical practice guideline Oral Care for Children and Young People advises parents to visit the oral care professional before or from the eruption of the first tooth, because oral care starts with the first deciduous tooth. However, this is not yet standard for everyone. Still, almost all parents of newborns (> 95%) visit well-baby clinics with their newborn. This article describes how well-baby clinics and oral care can collaborate and how in the Netherlands, young children and their parents can be contacted earlier for (preventive) dental care. There are a few examples of proj

Propolis is a resinous substance produced naturally by bees, and it consists of the exudates of plants mixed with enzymes, wax, and pollen. Propolis continues to gain considerable scientific interest due to its potential health benefits. The modern-day use of propolis in pharmaceutical preparations, such as toothpastes, mouthwashes, chewable tablets, mucoadhesive gels, and sprays, is increasing. However, the effectiveness of using propolis-containing pharmaceuticals in dentistry is not clear. The present paper aims to review the literature on the dental applications of propolis in preventive d

A caries-preventive regime comprising fluoride supplementation in age-related doses, three monthly acid-phosphate-fluoride applications, fissure sealing of deciduous and first permanent molars and chair-side dental health education, had been proved cost-effective in a single health centre setting. It was therefore expanded to a community-wide project in the Greater Glasgow area. This study describes the coverage achieved by the scheme, the demographic details of the children involved, and measured the dental health benefits accrued by the participants. The children received an annual dental ex

Changing demographics, including the increase in life expectancy and the growing numbers of elderly, has focused attention on the need for dental research activities to be expanded for geriatric dentistry. The elderly are at greater risk for oral disease, since gains in longevity result in more medically compromising conditions or systemic disease with oral manifestations. Also, as edentulism decreases and as more teeth are retained by the elderly, the pattern of oral diseases and the treatment of dental conditions will be altered. Barriers to self-care and professional care must be removed, a
