A review of the primary dysautonomias of domestic animals.

Primary dysautonomias appear to be the result of initial damage to the protein synthetic pathway of a specific neuronal population, but despite detailed morphological study of several species there is, as yet, no indication of the precise lesion or the nature of the causal agent. The very marked similarities between the species with regard to lesion type, distribution, the age group affected and the geographical restrictions of occurrence would suggest a very similar, if not common, aetiology. There is no explanation, however, for the 70 year gap between its appearance in horses and its subseq

Review of published research on primary dysautonomia of domestic animals.

An article published in 1992 by Marion M. Pollin and I.R. Griffiths reviewed the topic of primary dysautonomias of the autonomic nervous system of unidentified origin in multiple domestic species, specifically cats, dogs and horses. Thirty-one years later, we appear no closer to identifying the causal agents of these strikingly similar diseases. This article reviews the similarities and differences in clinical presentation and pathology of dysautonomia in canids, felids, equids, leporids and other less frequently reported species.

[Peripheral neuropathy and dysautonomia in a patient with primary Sjögren's syndrome].

A 46 year-old female presented with dry eyes and a dry mouth which she had been experiencing for about 15 years. She also began to notice dizziness (orthostatic hypotension) during the last 5 years. The symptoms gradually increased whereupon she began to have polyarthralgia, facial flashing, hyper and hyposweating in some areas on the face and trunk. Her sialography showed a damaged parotid gland. Minor salivary gland biopsy revealed chronic sialoadenitis. The Sirmer test was low, and the Rosebengal test indicated keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Her serological tests showed hypocomplementemia and

Predominant Glandular Cholinergic Dysautonomia in Patients With Primary Sjögren's Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulates exocrine gland function. Available data show poor correlation between the degree of function and destruction of the exocrine glands in primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS), suggesting that other mechanisms, such as autonomic dysfunction, may be important in these patients. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive analysis of sympathoneural and sympathetic cholinergic function in well-characterized patients with primary SS. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with primary SS (mean ± SEM age 44.2 ± 2.8 years) and 13 healthy control subject

Enamel development in primary molars from children with familial dysautonomia.

OBJECTIVES: Familial dysautonomia (FD) is an autosomal recessive disorder, classified as a hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III, associated with growth defects affecting postnatal development. This study analysed prenatal and postnatal enamel development and postnatal calcification in upper second primary molars from FD children in comparison with healthy controls. The postnatal enamel of FD was also examined histologically for manifestation of growth insults. DESIGN: The analyses were carried out on two ground sections, connecting buccal and palatinal cusp tips of mesial and

Dysautonomia as a form of presentation of primary Sjögren's disease: a case series of six patients.

We present six patients with dysautonomia secondary to primary Sjögren's disease (pSjD) and analyze the literature regarding this topic. Case series. Patients were retrospectively recruited from a tertiary center in Mexico from 2001 to 2022 and included if they met 2016 ACR/EULAR criteria for SjD. Dysautonomia was diagnosed by the presence of autonomic symptoms and at least one of Ewin's battery tests. We scored the Composite Autonomic Severity Scale (CASS), and the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS-31). Patients (n = 6) were primarily females (83%), with a range of 23 to 60 years at

Hypersensitivity to N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine in fibroblasts from patients with Huntington disease, familial dysautonomia, and other primary neuronal degenerations.

Cells from patients with ataxia telangiectasia, a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by primary neuronal degeneration, are abnormally sensitive to the DNA-damaging chemical N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. We have conducted experiments to determine whether more common primary neuronal degenerations also have a hypersensitivity to this radiomimetic chemical. Fibroblast strains from 13 control donors and from 13 patients with inherited primary neuronal degenerations were treated in vitro with the chemical, and the strains' sensitivity to the chemical was then determined by measu

Scintigraphic differentiation between two forms of primary dysautonomia early after onset of autonomic dysfunction: value of cardiac and pulmonary iodine-123 MIBG uptake.

Primary dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system can be observed in patients with Parkinson's disease and those with multiple system atrophy. However, the fate of the two diseases differs considerably and leads to different strategies for patient management. Differentiation of the two diseases currently requires a combination of several clinical and electrophysiological tests. First studies of myocardial innervation using iodine-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) indicated a possible role of scintigraphy for this purpose. An increase in the pulmonary uptake of 123I-MIBG has been reported in

Dysautonomia: Diagnosis and Management.

Dysautonomias are a heterogenous group of disorders that can cause variable symptoms ranging from isolated impairment of one autonomic function to multisystem failure. The causes are also diverse and can be central or peripheral and primary (owing to an intrinsic neurologic cause) or secondary (owing to a disorder that secondarily causes damage to the autonomic nervous system). This review covers common phenotypes of dysautonomias, primary and secondary causes, initial clinical workups, interpretation of common autonomic tests, and first-line treatments. A brief review of autonomic impairment

[The most common dysautonomias].

AIMS: To review the classification and the clinical and pathological characteristics of the most common dysautonomias. METHOD: Primary dysautonomia includes neurodegenerative diseases of unknown causes that are characterised by the intracytoplasmic accumulations of alpha synuclein that manifest with four different phenotypes: pure autonomic failure, Parkinson s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and multiple system atrophy. Of the secondary dysautonomias, diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of autonomic neuropathy in developed countries. Familiar dysautonomia is a recessive autosomic d

Dysautonomia: a common comorbidity of systemic disease.

Referring to a broad spectrum of the autonomic symptoms, autonomic disorders, and general dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, dysautonomia is one of the common and under-recognized comorbidities of a wide variety of systemic disease, including diabetes, autoimmune disorders, vitamin deficiencies, and hormonal dysregulation. The most common autonomic disorders encountered in clinical practice are postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS), and orthostatic hypotension (OH), which may be undiagnosed or often mislabeled with psychiatric disorders. Treatment Progress of Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity after Acquired Brain Injury.

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is a common complication of various acquired brain injuries such as traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, anoxic brain injury, intracerebral hemorrhage, and others. It is manifested by tachycardia, hypertension, tachypnea, diaphoresis, and dystonic posturing. The development of PSH can prolong hospitalization and lead to secondary brain injury and even death. Despite the awareness of the serious clinical impact, there is no consensus on diagnostic criteria. Thus, misdiagnosis and delayed recognition is very common. Most of the current treat

Dysautonomia in Parkinson disease.

Dysautonomias are conditions in which altered function of one or more components of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) adversely affects health. This review updates knowledge about dysautonomia in Parkinson disease (PD). Most PD patients have symptoms or signs of dysautonomia; occasionally, the abnormalities dominate the clinical picture. Components of the ANS include the sympathetic noradrenergic system (SNS), the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), the sympathetic cholinergic system (SCS), the sympathetic adrenomedullary system (SAS), and the enteric nervous system (ENS). Dysfunction of ea

Dysautonomia and activity in the early stroke recovery period.

Maintaining cerebral perfusion in the early stages of recovery after stroke is paramount. Autoregulatory function may be impaired during this period leaving cerebral perfusion directly reliant on intravascular volume and blood pressure (BP) with increased risk for expanding cerebral infarction during periods of low BP and hemorrhagic transformation during BP elevations. We suspected that dysautonomia is common during the acute period related to both pre-existing vascular risk factors and potentially independent of such conditions. Thus, we sought to understand the state of the science specific

Genetic testing for autonomic dysfunction or dysautonomias.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The autonomic system is made of two divisions called the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and extends from the central to the peripheral nervous system for controlling homeostasis. Autonomic dysfunction, also known as dysautonomia, occurs when the nerves that control involuntary bodily functions do not work properly. The aim of this mini-review is to summarize all the syndromes characterized by dysautonomia and for which the associated gene is known. METHODS: We searched those syndromes in PubMed and OMIM database. RESULTS: We found 36 genetic syndromes cha
