Gambling is legal in most countries. However, despite having some economic benefits, certain characteristics of gambling can have health consequences, rendering it a public health issue. The effects can be summarized according to the following three "laws" of ethical gambling: "Gambling Dynamics Law": companies' economic gains come directly from players' losses; "Expected Loss Law": the more one gambles, the greater the probability of losing; and "Addiction Law": the more one gambles, the greater the need to play again, leading to further losses. Ludens is a gambling addiction prevention progr

For more than a decade, dialysis units have had to contend with an increasing number of difficult or disruptive dialysis patients. These individuals present a spectrum of behaviors, ranging from those that harm only themselves to those that physically endanger dialysis staff. Such behaviors can interfere with the ability of the dialysis staff to care for the patient in question and for other patients; in addition, threats or actual physical abuse jeopardize the health and safety of both patients and staff. In this Review, we discuss how the application of ethical principles can assist dialysis

BACKGROUND: In past years, physicians have, with a certain continuity, reported increasing numbers of burnout, depression and compassion fatigue in their daily practice. These problems were attributed, not only but also, to a loss of public trust and an increase in violent behaviour of patients and family members towards medical professionals in all walks of life. Recently, however, during the breakout of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, there were public expressions of appreciation and respect for health care workers that almost universally have been assessed as indic

Misophonia is a condition involving decreased tolerance and intense responses to specific sounds, often those that are human-generated and repetitive in nature. Misophonia frequently onsets during childhood and is associated with significant distress, impairment, and diminished quality of life. While misophonia research remains nascent and no definitive practice guidelines exist at present, extant studies offer several promising potential avenues in intervention development for adults with misophonia. However, such research is comparatively limited for youth. Before widespread adoption of prom

INTRODUCTION: It is possible in many countries to not only become a living solid organ donor, but to become a serial living solid organ donor, a process in which an individual subsequently donates a liver lobe after donating a kidney, or vice versa. The major ethical issues that surround uncompensated living single solid organ donation (the doctor's duties to respect autonomy, of beneficence, and of non-maleficence) have been well described, and this process is generally considered ethically permissible if the donor has sufficient health, and if their decision is voluntary, fully informed, and

Fertility treatments, which are part of "assisted reproductive technologies" (ART), mainly undertaken through in vitro fertilization (IVF), offer the opportunity to infertile couples to conceive. IVF treatments are undertaken in Israel in significantly higher numbers than in the rest of the world. As such, Israel provides an important case-in-point for examining the validity of the actual claims used to justify the more generous public funding of IVF treatments at the policy level. In this article, we utilize an analytical philosophy approach to conduct this examination. First, we highlight tw

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is disrupting healthcare and health professions education (HPE), creating complex ethical challenges. Despite existing governance frameworks, postgraduate and continuing professional development (CPD) learners require stronger micro-level ethical competence. However, AI-ethics remains insufficiently integrated into postgraduate/CPD curricula with few real-world reflective and interprofessional strategies, raising concerns regarding ethical preparedness. The aim of this study is to map how AI ethics is taught within postgraduate/CPD HPE, drawing on princ

In this paper a plea is made for an unprincipled approach to biomedical ethics, unprincipled of course just in the sense that the four principles are neither the start nor the end of the process of ethical reflection. While the four principles constitute a useful "checklist" approach to bioethics for those new to the field, and possibly for ethics committees without substantial ethical expertise approaching new problems, it is an approach which if followed by the bioethics community as a whole would, the author believes, lead to sterility and uniformity of approach of a quite mindbogglingly bo

BACKGROUND: In 1926, Fritz Jahr described bio-ethics (German: bio-ethik) as "the assumption of moral obligations not only towards humans, but towards all forms of life." Jahr summarized his philosophy by declaring, "Respect every living being on principle as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such!." Bioethics was thus originally an ethical system concerned with the "problems of interference with other living beings… and generally everything related to the balance of the ecosystem" according to the 1978 Encyclopedia of Bioethics. This definition was predicated on the work of Fritz

The age-old maxim of scientists whose work has resulted in deadly or dangerous technologies is: scientists are not to blame, but rather technologists and politicians must be morally culpable for the uses of science. As new technologies threaten not just populations but species and biospheres, scientists should reassess their moral culpability when researching fields whose impact may be catastrophic. Looking at real-world examples such as smallpox research and the Australian "mousepox trick", and considering fictional or future technologies like Kurt Vonnegut's "ice-nine" from Cat's Cradle, and

The aim of this literature review was to determine if there is adequate ethical justification for presymptomatic genetic testing on potential Huntington's disease patients. Huntington's disease is a neurological genetic disorder characterized by midlife onset which consists of cognitive, physical, and emotional deterioration. Although genetic testing has traditionally been guided by the principle of autonomy, severe psychological consequences such as depression, anxiety, survival guilt, and suicide have complicated the ethical issue of providing a presymptomatic yet definitive diagnosis for an

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The labor and delivery unit poses unique challenges for the clinician faced with an ethical dilemma. Ethics training for physicians is heterogeneous and may not include specifics that are relevant to the obstetric anesthesiologist such as the implications of caring for a maternal-fetal dyad.
RECENT FINDINGS: Rapid changes to the reproductive healthcare landscape have impacted healthcare professionals in recent years, who are at risk for moral distress when faced with ethical dilemmas in clinical care.
SUMMARY: Principlism is the most commonly applied ethical theory in clin

A balance needs to be struck between facilitating compassionate access to innovative treatments for those in desperate need, and the duty to protect such vulnerable individuals from the harms of untested/unlicensed treatments. We introduced a principle-based framework (2009) to evaluate such requests and describe its application in the context of recently evolved UK, US and European regulatory processes. 24 referrals (20 individual; four group) were received by our quaternary children's hospital Clinical Ethics Committee (CEC) over the 5-year period (2011-16). The CEC-rapid response group eval

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest that medical students' moral competence decreases throughout medical school. This pilot study gives preliminary insights into the effects of two educational interventions in ethics classes on moral competence among medical students in Munich, Germany.
METHODS: Between 2012 and 2013, medical students were tested using Lind's Moral Competence Test (MCT) prior to and after completing different ethics classes. The experimental group (EG, N = 76) participated in principle-based structured case discussions (PBSCDs) and was compared with a control group with theor

BACKGROUND: Dementia care involves ethically complex situations across diverse clinical, social care, and policy contexts, yet practice-oriented ethical guidance remains limited. Existing ethical frameworks rarely capture the full complexity of practice across European contexts. This article presents the development and pilot external validation of an Ethical Framework for Decision-Making in Dementia Care, designed for professional caregivers.
METHODS: Within COST Action CA21137 (Ethics in Dementia - EDEM), a multidisciplinary European consortium developed the framework through an iterative,

Care theory offers a way to overcome a weakness of liberalism--its reluctance to intervene in the private lives of adults. In caring for the homeless, we must sometimes use a limited form of coercion, but our intervention is always interactive, and the process of finding a solution is one of negotiation between the needs expressed by the homeless and the needs we infer for them.

The chronic worldwide lack of organs for transplantation and the continuing improvement of strategies for in situ organ preservation have led to renewed interest in elective non-therapeutic ventilation of potential organ donors. Two types of situation may be eligible for elective intensive care: patients definitely evolving towards brain death and patients suitable as controlled non-heart beating organ donors after life-supporting therapies have been assessed as futile and withdrawn. Assessment of the ethical acceptability and the risks of these strategies is essential. We here offer such an e

Despite tendencies to compete for a prime place in moral theory, neither virtue ethics nor the four principles approach should claim to be superior to, or logically prior to, the other. Together they provide a more adequate account of the moral life than either can offer on its own. The virtues of principlism are clarity, simplicity and (to some extent) universality. These are well illustrated by Ranaan Gillon's masterly analysis of the cases he has provided. But the vices of this approach are the converse of its virtues: neglect of emotional and personal factors, oversimplification of the iss

During the past fifteen years, the relationship between literature and medical ethics has evolved from the occasional use of stories as a substitute for the traditional case study in medical ethics to the emergence of a narrative approach to ethical analysis and decision making. Thus far, literary theory has been more important to narrative medical ethics than have works of literature themselves. Perri Klass's novel Other Women's Children deserves special scrutiny, however, because an analysis of it demonstrates ways that a narrative approach could enhance traditional philosophical and legal a
