Three-dimensional (3D) printing, or additive manufacturing, revolutionises medicine by creating customised objects from digital models, layer by layer. In hospitals, technologies like Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), stereolithography, and laser powder bed fusion are used, each offering unique advantages. Materials range from biocompatible polymers for orthoses to metal alloys for implants. FDM printers are affordable and suitable for prototyping but lack precision. Stereolithography provides high resolution and biocompatibility, ideal for medical devices, though postprocessing is required. P

Direct sound printing (DSP), an alternative additive manufacturing process driven by sonochemical polymerization, has traditionally been confined to a single acoustic focal region, resulting in a voxel-by-voxel printing approach. To overcome this limitation, we introduce holographic direct sound printing (HDSP), where acoustic holograms, storing cross-sectional images of the desired parts, pattern acoustic waves to induce regional cavitation bubbles and on-demand regional polymerization. HDSP outperforms DSP in terms of printing speed by one order of magnitude and yields layerless printed stru

Inkjet printing (IJP) is an additive manufacturing process that selectively deposits ink materials, layer-by-layer, to create 3D objects or 2D patterns with precise control over their structure and composition. This technology has emerged as an attractive and versatile approach to address the ever-evolving demands of personalized medicine in the healthcare industry. Although originally developed for nonhealthcare applications, IJP harnesses the potential of pharma-inks, which are meticulously formulated inks containing drugs and pharmaceutical excipients. Delving into the formulation and compo

By June 2013, seventeen workers had suffered from intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) in an offset proof-printing company in Osaka and nine of the workers had died. Ages at diagnosis were 25 to 45 years old. Known risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma were not found in the patients. All of the patients were exposed to 1,2-dichloropropane at high level for long-term and were diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma 7 to 20 years after the first exposure. Twelve of the patients were also exposed to dichloromethane. The Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recognized

Methods to make microfluidic chips using 3D printers have attracted much attention because these simple procedures allow rapid fabrication of ready-to-use products from digital 3D designs with minimal human intervention. Printing high-resolution chips that are simultaneously transparent, biocompatible and contain regions of dissimilar materials is an ongoing challenge. Transparency allows for the optical inspection of specimens containing cells and labeled biomolecules inside the chip. Being able to use different materials for different layers in the product increases the number of potential a

Jetting printing is widely used in electronics, biomedicine and other advanced manufacturing fields, yet jetting trajectory divergence severely impairs its printing resolution and deposition efficiency. Here, we propose a non-contact acoustic manipulation strategy for jetting trajectory regulation based on a hemispherical ultrasonic phased array. A dual-focus acoustic field is constructed via phase modulation of the transducer elements within the array, and the acoustic radiation force generated by this field is utilized to suppress the divergent motion of in-flight droplets. The acoustic fiel

Aerosol jet printing, AJP, has emerged as a versatile direct ink writing technology enabling high-resolution, non-contact patterning of diverse biomaterials across a broad viscosity range. This capability facilitates the fabrication of complex micro- and mesoscale architectures on planar and non-planar substrates, advancing applications in biosensing, microfluidics, tissue engineering, and drug delivery fields. Herein, we review the integration of this high-resolution, rapid prototyping method with bioinks, including proteins, DNA, collagen, gelatin, and silk fibroin, and analyze how processin

While 3D printing in hand surgery is still in its infancy, it offers new avenues in research, teaching, and personalized medicine. For these reasons, some surgeons may want to jump on the bandwagon of this trendy technology. But we cannot forget that its superiority over conventional techniques has not been demonstrated. Surgeons who want to work with 3D printed objects must master their use and the entire manufacturing process, otherwise they risk becoming dependent on engineers and/or medical device companies.

During a 2-year period in Toronto, Canada, 21 printing tradesmen with contact dermatitis were evaluated. 67% had allergic contact dermatitis; 29% due to ultraviolet-cured ink components. Irritant contact dermatitis accounted for 37% of the cases. The prognosis in printing tradesmen with contact dermatitis is guarded, except for those with allergic contact dermatitis due to UV-cured components, as the tradesmen who were sensitized to other contactants eventually left the trade. Offset lithography was associated with the problem in 18 of the 21 cases. A brief outline is given of the printing pro

Semi-solid extrusion (SSE) 3D printing, a type of syringe-based direct-ink writing, is increasingly being investigated for pharmaceutical dosage forms because of the possibility of low-temperature processing, multi-material architectures, and patient-specific designs. However, beyond feasibility, translation is limited by high process sensitivity; small changes in ink history, extrusion dynamics, deposition kinematics, and post-print solidification can cause defects that propagate to critical quality attributes (CQAs) such as mass and content uniformity (CU), mechanical integrity, disintegrati

Reducing waste and enabling material reuse are central goals for sustainable advanced manufacturing. In light-based 3D printing, this requires moving beyond permanent networks toward systems that can be easily returned to their original molecular building blocks, while preserving good performance. Here, a shift toward metastable, 3D printable polymers is introduced, which are intrinsically programmed for controlled depolymerization under mild conditions, enabling circular recovery. This concept is realized using self-immolative polymers (SIPs), which undergo triggered, domino-like depolymeriza

Corneal diseases remain a leading cause of blindness, and corneal transplantation is the primary treatment for severe cases. However, the persistent shortage of donor corneas significantly limits this approach. Artificial corneas with engineered biomaterials designed to mimic the structure and function of native corneal tissue offer a promising alternative, and significant progress has been made, including FDA approval and clinical trials. Among emerging technologies, 3D printing enables personalized customization of implants tailored to patient needs, anatomy, and pathology. This method also

Endovascular treatment of aortic disease, including aneurysm or dissection, is expanding at a rapid pace. Often, the specific patient anatomy in these cases is complex. Additive manufacturing, also known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, is especially useful in the treatment of aortic disease, due to its ability to manufacture physical models of complex patient anatomy. Compared to other surgical procedures, endovascular aortic repair can readily exploit the advantages of 3D printing with regard to operative planning and preoperative training. To date, there have been numerous uses of 3D pri

Additive manufacturing promises to revolutionize manufacturing industries. However, 3D printing of novel build materials is currently limited by constraints inherent to printer designs. In this work, a bench-top powder melt extrusion (PME) 3D printer head was designed and fabricated to print parts directly from powder-based materials rather than filament. The final design of the PME printer head evolved from the Rich Rap Universal Pellet Extruder (RRUPE) design and was realized through an iterative approach. The PME printer was made possible by modifications to the funnel shape, pressure appli
