We tested the adaptive hypothesis of psychopathy in human and computer Prisoner Dilemma (PD) matches. From a cohort of 448 male undergraduates who completed the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP), 31 high psychopathic (PP) and 29 low PP students, sampled from upper and lower quartiles of the cohort, played a 40-round PD match in which real money was at stake. The human matches were of three kinds: Low PP versus Low PP, Low PP versus High PP, and High PP versus High PP. In computer simulations, the empirical defection probabilities from High and Low PP human players were entered in a

Reciprocity is central to explanations of cooperation among unrelated individuals in societies of humans and other animals. Most mathematical analyses of the evolution of reciprocity are based on the repeated Prisoner's Dilemma (RPD) and typically assume that new strategies are rarely introduced by mutation or analogous cultural processes, that behavioral errors are absent or infrequent, and that agents are bound to interact with the same partner. Here we analyze a version of the RPD in which new strategies are frequently tested, behavioral errors occur at a non-negligible rate, and actors may

Recent research has analyzed how individual characteristics, like the exposure to different hormones and symmetry, affect decision-making and strategic behaviour. The present article investigates the effect of symmetry, of exposure to testosterone (T) in utero and during puberty and of current T on cooperation in a Prisoners' Dilemma Game (PDG). T is a hormone with well known effect on males' behaviour, and that promotes activities that seek to increase reproductive success. Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) reflects the ability of the organism to maintain a stable development and it is usually emplo

Cooperation is a universal human principle reflecting working with others to achieve common goals. The rational decision-making model contends that cooperation is the best strategy for maximizing benefits in an iterative prisoner's dilemma. However, the motivations for cooperation (or betrayal) are complex and diverse, and often include fairness reflections. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study underlying neural differences in brain regions related to fairness when people interact with an opponent who tend to cooperate or betray, at different decision-making st

To be the fittest is central to proliferation in evolutionary games. Individuals thus adopt the strategies of better performing players in the hope of successful reproduction. In structured populations the array of those that are eligible to act as strategy sources is bounded to the immediate neighbors of each individual. But which one of these strategy sources should potentially be copied? Previous research dealt with this question either by selecting the fittest or by selecting one player uniformly at random. Here we introduce a parameter u that interpolates between these two extreme options

We propose a mathematical model of the N -person prisoner's dilemma game played by a continuous population of agents with a time-dependent aspiration level. The model-a system of differential equations-takes into account the evolution of the aspiration level and of the mean frequency of the cooperators in the population. The dependence of the asymptotic level of cooperation on the individual payoffs and on the transition rates determining the agent's reaction to the received payoffs is studied. In general the existence and the magnitude of the asymptotic level of cooperation depends on N , the

The conflict between individual and collective interests makes fostering cooperation in human societies a challenging task, requiring drastic measures such as the establishment of sanctioning institutions. These institutions are costly because they have to be maintained regardless of the presence or absence of offenders. Here, we revisit some improvements to the standard N-person prisoner's dilemma formulation with institutional punishment in a well-mixed population, namely the elimination of overpunishment, the requirement of a minimum number of contributors to establish the sanctioning insti

Strategy changes are an essential part of evolutionary games. Here, we introduce a simple rule that, depending on the value of a single parameter w , influences the selection of players that are considered as potential sources of the new strategy. For positive w players with high payoffs will be considered more likely, while for negative w the opposite holds. Setting w equal to zero returns the frequently adopted random selection of the opponent. We find that increasing the probability of adopting the strategy from the fittest player within reach, i.e., setting w positive, promotes the evoluti

Burn injuries among incarcerated individuals represent an underexplored intersection of medical ethics, correctional policy, and health equity. Although scholarship increasingly examines vulnerable groups such as refugees and undocumented patients, incarcerated burn patients remain largely absent. Dual loyalty-balancing duty to the patient with obligations to the institution or state-creates distinctive challenges that are intensified in burn care, where timely intervention, pain control, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support are critical but often constrained by security protocols and syst

Given the long history of abuse of prisoners in medical experimentation, it is understandable that additional safeguards have been established to protect this social category. However, the debate between the detractors and the supporters of the medical experimentation in the prison environment is still going on. The present history note, the fourth in a series on medical experimentation on prisoners, intended to relate the main arguments of both sides: ie; the detractors and supporters of medical experimentation on prisoners.

We consider continuous Prisoner's Dilemma games played in a spatial setting by group-structured populations. The evolutionary dynamics is driven by within-group individual-level birth and death events, and by group-level fission and extinction events. Within groups, individuals play well-mixed games, while groups play games on a 1-dimensional spatial grid against their nearest neighbours. Payoffs from individual-level games affect birth rates of individuals, and payoffs from group-level games affect group extinction and fission probabilities. It is well known that the within-group evolution by

Data from self-report and observational studies make it clear that problematic social anxiety confers interpersonal constraint that may contribute to the interpersonal dysfunction reported by individuals with social anxiety disorder. Direct observation of interpersonal behavior in established relationships is rare and difficult to obtain for practical reasons. We tested a flexible iterated prisoner's dilemma computer task to examine whether it might capture interpersonal constraint related to social anxiety. Our first study suggested that, at least for men, the task directly captures social an

Adaptive social behavior often necessitates choosing to cooperate with others for long-term gains at the expense of noncooperative behaviors giving larger immediate gains. Although little is know about the neural substrates that support cooperative over noncooperative behaviors, recent research has shown that mutually cooperative behavior in the context of a mixed-motive game, the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD), is associated with increased neural activity within reinforcement circuitry. Other research attests to a role for serotonin in the modulation of social behavior and in reward processing. In t

BACKGROUND: Biased social decision-making might play a critical role in interpersonal difficulties and relapse among individuals with severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD), but its exploration remains scarce. We measured social decision-making in SAUD through an ecological iterated prisoner's dilemma paradigm, measuring cooperative versus competitive tendencies during social interactions.
METHODS: Forty detoxified patients with SAUD (16 females, mean age = 50.40 years, SD = 9.82) and 40 matched control participants (17 females, mean age = 44.48 years, SD = 12.87) played six iterated prisoner's d

The balancing of benefits is a critical pathway for maintaining cooperative relationships among selfish individuals within a group. Relevant research has confirmed that the ultimate outcomes of altruistic actions essentially revert to the level of self-interest. This study posits that individuals exhibit heterogeneous cooperative behaviors in social interactions due to differences in cognitive abilities and personality traits; accordingly, conservative cooperative strategy and aggressive cooperative strategy are introduced. Conservative cooperators are characterized by incurring additional ide

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to investigate the influences of acute sleep deprivation on cooperation with two classical social dilemmas, the Prisoner's dilemma (PD) and the chicken dilemma (CD).
METHODS: All participants (N=24) were required to come for the experiments twice; one time for normal sleep condition, the other time for sleep deprivation condition, with a counter-balanced sequence. In the following afternoon, participants completed the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) and two social dilemmas tasks, as well as the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), the Risk Orientation Questi

Recent work in neuroeconomics has used game theory paradigms to examine neural systems that subserve human social interaction and decision making. Attempts to modify social interaction through pharmacological manipulation have been less common. Here we show dose-dependent modification of human social behavior in a prisoner's dilemma model after acute administration of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A modulating benzodiazepine alprazolam. Nine healthy adults received doses of placebo, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg alprazolam in a counterbalanced within-subject design, while completing multiple test bloc
