An fMRI study of reward-related probability learning.

The human striatum has been implicated in processing reward-related information. More recently, activity in the striatum, particularly the caudate nucleus, has been observed when a contingency between behavior and reward exists, suggesting a role for the caudate in reinforcement-based learning. Using a gambling paradigm, in which affective feedback (reward and punishment) followed simple, random guesses on a trial by trial basis, we sought to investigate the role of the caudate nucleus as reward-related learning progressed. Participants were instructed to make a guess regarding the value of a

Aversive Learning Increases Release Probability of Olfactory Sensory Neurons.

Predicting danger from previously associated sensory stimuli is essential for survival. Contributions from altered peripheral sensory inputs are implicated in this process, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we use the mammalian olfactory system to investigate such mechanisms. Primary olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) project their axons directly to the olfactory bulb (OB) glomeruli, where their synaptic release is subject to local and cortical influence and neuromodulation. Pairing optogenetic activation of a single glomerulus with foot shock in mice induces freezing to light

Are baboons learning "orthographic" representations? Probably not.

The ability of Baboons (papio papio) to distinguish between English words and nonwords has been modeled using a deep learning convolutional network model that simulates a ventral pathway in which lexical representations of different granularity develop. However, given that pigeons (columba livia), whose brain morphology is drastically different, can also be trained to distinguish between English words and nonwords, it appears that a less species-specific learning algorithm may be required to explain this behavior. Accordingly, we examined whether the learning model of Rescorla and Wagner, whic

Human learning of probability distributions is biased toward moderate structural complexity.

Inferring hidden environmental structures, which commonly involves learning arbitrary probability distributions from limited samples, is essential to optimal and adaptive behaviors across various cognitive domains. However, it remains largely unknown how the internal representations constructed by humans may deviate from actual probabilistic structures, and what computational processes, operated under inherent cognitive limitations, give rise to these representations. We first develop a structured distribution report task to reveal human participants' internal representations, with findings ve

Training variability facilitates the flexibility of goal-specific spatial probability learning.

Selection history is traditionally characterized as a rigid and automated habit that persists regardless of current goals. Although recent research suggests that explicit goals can modulate this process, the mechanisms underlying this flexibility and its acquisition conditions remain poorly understood. Across two experiments using simple geometric shapes, the present study examined the joint modulatory effects of explicit goals and training variability on spatial probability learning. Experiment 1 demonstrated that explicit goals can directly activate the spatial priority map, ruling out confo

Investigation of probability maps in deep-learning-based brain ventricle parcellation.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a brain disorder associated with ventriculomegaly. Accurate segmentation of the ventricle system into its sub-compartments from magnetic resonance images (MRIs) could help evaluate NPH patients for surgical intervention. In this paper, we modify a 3D U-net utilizing probability maps to perform accurate ventricle parcellation, even with grossly enlarged ventricles and post-surgery shunt artifacts, from MRIs. Our method achieves a mean dice similarity coefficient (DSC) on whole ventricles for healthy controls of 0.864 ± 0.047 and 0.961 ± 0.024 for NPH patie

Automatic echocardiographic evaluation of the probability of pulmonary hypertension using machine learning.

Echocardiography, a simple and noninvasive tool, is the first choice for screening pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, accurate assessment of PH, incorporating both the pulmonary artery pressures and additional signs for PH remained unsatisfied. Thus, this study aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model that can automatically evaluate the probability of PH. This cohort included data from 346 (275 for training set and internal validation set and 71 for external validation set) patients with suspected PH patients and receiving right heart catheterization. Echocardiographic images on paras

Synergistic biophysics and machine learning modeling to rapidly predict cardiac growth probability.

Computational models that can predict growth and remodeling of the heart could have important clinical applications. However, the time it takes to calibrate and run current models while considering data uncertainty and variability makes them impractical for routine clinical use. This study aims to address this need by creating a computational framework to efficiently predict cardiac growth probability. We utilized a biophysics model to rapidly simulate cardiac growth following mitral valve regurgitation (MVR). Here we developed a two-tiered Bayesian History Matching approach augmented with Gau

The effect of emotional faces on reward-related probability learning in depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Existing research indicates that individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) exhibit a bias toward salient negative stimuli. However, the impact of such biased stimuli on concurrent cognitive and affective processes in individuals with depression remains inadequately understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of salient environmental stimuli, specifically emotional faces, on reward-associated processes in MDD. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with recurrent MDD and thirty-two healthy controls (HC) matched for age, sex, and education were included in the study. We u

Deep learning-based malignancy probability estimation of pulmonary nodules in PET/CT imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The current BTS guidelines recommend evaluation of suspicious pulmonary nodules using [18F]FDG-PET/CT imaging, followed by Herder model risk stratification. However, it is based on limited imaging features, which may limit diagnostic accuracy. This study aims to develop a PET/CT-based deep learning (DL) model for malignancy probability estimation (AITO-PETCT-MP) and compare its performance to the Herder model and clinician performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a single-center retrospective study, we collected 533 indeterminate pulmonary nodules (268 malignant) with a mean diameter

Probability learning and feedback processing in dyslexia: A performance and heart rate analysis.

Recent studies suggest that individuals with dyslexia may be impaired in probability learning and performance monitoring. These observations are consistent with findings indicating atypical neural activations in frontostriatal circuits in the brain, which are important for associative learning. The current study further examined probability learning and performance monitoring in adult individuals with dyslexia (n = 23) and typical readers (n = 31) using two varieties of a typical probabilistic learning task. In addition to performance measures, we measured heart rate, focusing on cardiac slowi

Machine learning model to estimate probability of remission in patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is a type of nephrotic syndrome and the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. As far as we know, no predictive model for assessing the prognosis of IMN is currently available. This study aims to establish a nomogram to predict remission probability in patients with IMN and assists clinicians to make treatment decisions. METHODS: A total of 266 patients with histopathology-proven IMN were included in this study. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was utilized to identify the most important variables. Subsequently, m

Ensemble learning of inverse probability weights for marginal structural modeling in large observational datasets.

Inverse probability weights used to fit marginal structural models are typically estimated using logistic regression. However, a data-adaptive procedure may be able to better exploit information available in measured covariates. By combining predictions from multiple algorithms, ensemble learning offers an alternative to logistic regression modeling to further reduce bias in estimated marginal structural model parameters. We describe the application of two ensemble learning approaches to estimating stabilized weights: super learning (SL), an ensemble machine learning approach that relies on V-

3D vessel reconstruction from sparse-view dynamic DSA images via vessel probability guided attenuation learning.

Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) is one of the gold standards for vascular disease diagnosis. With the help of a contrast agent, time-resolved 2D DSA images deliver comprehensive blood flow information and can be utilized to reconstruct 3D vessel structures for medical assessment. Current commercial DSA systems typically require hundreds of scanning views to perform reconstruction, resulting in substantial radiation exposure. In this study, we propose a neural rendering-based optimization framework tailored for high-quality sparse-view DSA reconstruction to reduce radiation dosage. Our ap

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in a hyperendemic metropolitan area in Iran: spatial probability modeling by machine-learning.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a parasitic, vector-borne infection with a broad, global distribution is prevalent in Mashhad, a city in north-eastern Iran, which is known as a significant hyperendemic area both for anthroponotic and zoonotic CL. This study evaluates the spatial distribution probability of CL prevalence by examining various factors such as socio-demography, built environment, geology, and climate within Mashhad. Data from 3,033 CL patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed. Sociological, environmental, and climatic variables were assessed using the generalized linear

Machine learning for normal tissue complication probability prediction: Predictive power with versatility and easy implementation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A popular Normal tissue Complication (NTCP) model deployed to predict radiotherapy (RT) toxicity is the Lyman-Burman Kutcher (LKB) model of tissue complication. Despite the LKB model's popularity, it can suffer from numerical instability and considers only the generalized mean dose (GMD) to an organ. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can potentially offer superior predictive power of the LKB model, and with fewer drawbacks. Here we examine the numerical characteristics and predictive power of the LKB model and compare these with those of ML. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both

Chunking Versus Transitional Probabilities: Differentiating Between Theories of Statistical Learning.

There are two main approaches to how statistical patterns are extracted from sequences: The transitional probability approach proposes that statistical learning occurs through the computation of probabilities between items in a sequence. The chunking approach, including models such as PARSER and TRACX, proposes that units are extracted as chunks. Importantly, the chunking approach suggests that the extraction of full units weakens the processing of subunits while the transitional probability approach suggests that both units and subunits should strengthen. Previous findings using sequentially
