LLMs in Problem-Based Learning: The Grounding Issue.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in medical education, including in problem-based learning (PBL). Their ability to summarize cases, generate differential diagnoses, and structure discussion raises the question of whether they might eventually replace PBL rather than merely support it. This paper offers a conceptual analysis of that question, using a renal-tumor PBL case derived from recent ChatGPT-assisted teaching research as an illustrative use case. It distinguishes among semantic support, representational uncertainty, and situated uncertainty. LLMs can contribute substant

Problem-based learning in nurse education: An unexpected problem for students with dyslexia.

This paper is a discussion that examines the difficulties caused by problem-based learning (PBL) in nurse education to students with dyslexia. The discussion is based on the authors' experience of implementing a curriculum based on PBL in one English University. It highlights a significant issue that might easily be overlooked as problem-based learning becomes common in nurse education. In short, this is that people with dyslexia may experience difficulties in understanding parts of the process of the method of learning as well as some of the more well known difficulties with written assessmen

Perioperative Management of Flecainide: A Problem-Based Learning Discussion.

Flecainide is a first-line antiarrhythmic drug used to treat atrial arrhythmias and/or supraventricular tachycardia in those without coronary artery disease or structural heart disease. Even though it is an older antiarrhythmic, flecainide accounted for 1.6 million prescriptions in the United States in 2016, and its utilization is generally increasing. Despite its popularity, flecainide may predispose patients to rapid atrial flutter with resultant hemodynamic compromise, particularly in the physiologically stressful perioperative period. This article reviews the pharmacology of flecainide, de

Learning about Vaccines in Middle School Using Socioscientific Issue Problem Based Learning Modules.

This NIH-funded pilot study took place in spring 2021 to evaluate socioscientific issues (SSI) problem-based learning (PBL) modules to engage middle school students in ill-structured problems in science and health modules as a scientific literacy teachable moment. Data included questionnaires, Zoom interviews, and other correspondence. This pilot case study investigated how two teachers integrated a Covid-19 related SSI into their middle school classrooms, support needed, and their perceptions about the nature of science using a qualitative, multiple case study design. Both teachers chose the

Problem-based learning discussion: Medical treatment of pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis.

This problem-based learning case focused on the approach to evaluation and management of a 5-year old girl who was "always sick" with sinus infections. The discussion unfolds in a "real life" scenario, i.e., based on information available to the clinician initially and after the acquisition of laboratory data, and, ultimately, after sinus surgery. Emphasis is placed on the differential diagnosis of the patient's symptoms, discussion of the initial management strategy for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), evolution from acute rhinosinusitis to CRS, the prevalence of and differential diagnosis of na

Effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning in Dental Education: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centred, self-directed learning approach that has been widely adopted in medical education. Although many studies have investigated the effectiveness of PBL, few have synthesised the existing evidence. The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the characteristics of PBL applied in dental education, particularly comparing its effectiveness with other pedagogical approaches through Kirkpatrick's four-level evaluation model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors applied the Arksey and O'Malley framework to undertake a scoping review. T

Veterinary Students' Perceptions of Online Versus Face-to-Face Problem-Based Learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online learning across higher education, including the use of digital online platforms to support small group teaching. While previous research suggests that online teaching can promote engagement and student interactions, limited evidence exists regarding suitability for problem-based group learning (PBL) centered on clinical case discussions. This study investigated veterinary students' perceptions of online versus face-to-face PBL environments. A two-part questionnaire was distributed to 450 students: part 1 during compulsory online delivery

Application of problem-based learning in EBERs-ISH theoretical and practical teaching.

BACKGROUND: In situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNAs (EBERs-ISH) is a cornerstone of clinical pathology, essential for the diagnosis of EBV-associated diseases. However, traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) in EBERs-ISH instruction often emphasizes unidirectional knowledge transfer, which frequently results in diminished student engagement and inadequate practical troubleshooting skills. While problem-based learning (PBL) has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing clinical competencies within medical education, its application in EBERs-ISH training remains underexplored.

Shaping future leaders: developing an MPH leadership curriculum through problem-based learning.

Leadership is essential to public health practice, yet few MPH programs offer structured, integrated approaches to cultivating leadership competencies. At the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Leadership in Practice (LIP) MPH concentration responds to this gap by embedding problem-based learning (PBL) throughout a multi-course curriculum designed to prepare students for real-world leadership challenges. Drawing on interdisciplinary faculty expertise and a constructivist pedagogical philosophy, the LIP curriculum emphasizes systems thinking, strategic d

A Problem-Based Learning Session on Pregnancy Options, Counseling, and Abortion Care.

INTRODUCTION: Before their clinical rotations, medical students have limited exposure to women's health issues, particularly abortion. METHODS: We piloted a problem-based learning (PBL) module to introduce second-year medical students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine to counseling patients about pregnancy options. Students were divided into groups of 10 and met for two 2-hour sessions. In the first session, learners were presented with a case about a woman diagnosed with Zika virus who was considering pregnancy termination. Students discussed the case and developed learning

The use of problem-based learning in dealing with cultural minority groups.

Minority peoples like the Romanies have divergent cultures. Typical cultural aspects for medical personnel to consider would include greetings and other communication, family and social support, dressing and habits of cleanliness, marriage and sexuality, honor, and other issues of importance to any human being. Some minority cultures have no geographic boundaries but they still may adopt the lifestyles of the country they live in. Physicians have to reckon with these different cultural patterns when dealing with patients. Patients must be treated equally at the same time when their personal ne

A blended problem-based learning/case-based learning/artificial intelligence teaching model for medical laboratory technology interns: a quasi-experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: The 1-year clinical practicum in China's 4-year medical laboratory technology (MLT) program often fails to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice. This study evaluated the effect of a blended learning model that integrated problem-based learning (PBL), case-based learning (CBL), and artificial intelligence (AI) on clinical training outcomes among MLT interns. METHODS: A total of 77 MLT interns (August 2024-April 2026) were assigned to a control group (traditional lecture-based teaching, n = 38) or an intervention group (blended PBL/CBL/AI teaching, n

Perioperative Management of an Implanted Spinal Cord Stimulator: A Problem-Based Learning Discussion.

Spinal cord stimulators (SCS) are increasingly implanted for chronic pain conditions, yet most anesthesiologists lack standardized training in their perioperative management. We present a case of a patient with an implanted SCS presenting for elective surgery, using this clinical scenario to address key decision points: preoperative device identification, electromagnetic interference from surgical energy sources, intraoperative monitoring considerations, and postoperative reactivation and analgesia. This report aims to equip clinicians with a practical framework for the perioperative care of p
