Trididemnum miniatum is a colonial ascidian harboring the photosymbiotic prokaryote Prochloron sp. These bacterial cells are located in the tunic of the host animal. The present study revealed, by ultrastructural analysis, that the Prochloron cells were exclusively distributed and proliferated in the tunic. They were shown to be embedded in the tunic matrix and to have no direct contact with ascidian cells. Some tunic cells of the ascidians, however, did phagocytize and digest the symbiont. Round cell masses were sometimes found in the tunic and appeared to consist of disintegrating cyanobacte

The subtilisin-like macrocyclase PatGmac is produced by the marine cyanobacterium Prochloron didemni. This enzyme is involved in the last step of the biosynthesis of patellamides, a cyanobactin type of ribosomally expressed and post-translationally modified cyclic peptides. PatGmac recognizes, cleaves, and cyclizes precursor peptides after a specific recognition motif comprised of a C-terminal tail with the sequence motif -AYDG. The result is the native macrocyclic patellamide, which has eight amino acid residues. Macrocyclase activity can be exploited by incorporating that motif in other shor

Despite the great diversity of the phylum Chordata, lifelong obligate symbiosis with cyanobacteria is only known in certain species belonging to four genera of didemnid ascidians: Didemnum, Diplosoma, Lissoclinum, and Trididemnum. This photosymbiosis in didemnid ascidians exhibits diversity in photosymbiont taxa, symbiont location in the host ascidian, and modes of vertical transmission of symbionts. While the family Didemnidae comprises over 600 colonial species, approximately 30 symbiotic species are known from tropical waters, alongside many non-symbiotic congeners. This study aimed to eluc

Marine organisms represent a source of unique chemical entities with valuable biomedical potentialities, broad diversity, and complexity. It is essential to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of marine natural products (MNPs) for their translation into commercial drugs and other valuable products. From a structural point of view and with few exceptions, MNPs of pharmaceutical importance derive from the so-called secondary metabolism of marine organisms. When production strategies rely on marine macroorganisms, harvesting or culturing coupled with extraction procedures frequently remain t
