Biocultural Ethnoecology of Nasua narica (Procyonidae, Mammalia) in Northeastern Oaxaca, México.

Oaxaca is one of the most biocultural diverse regions in Mexico. Although the white-nosed coati (Nasua narica L.; Procyonidae, Mammalia) is widely used by Indigenous and rural communities throughout the Neotropics, its role within subsistence hunting, traditional food systems, and local management practices in Oaxaca has remained undocumented. This study analyzes the biocultural significance of N. narica hunting and consumption among four Indigenous groups in northern Oaxaca. Data were collected through ethnographic techniques, i.e., semi-structured interviews with locals, ethnozoological fiel

Molecular evidence of Babesia species in Procyon cancrivorus (Carnivora, Procyonidae) in Uruguay.

The crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) is a carnivore widely distributed from southern Central America to all South American countries except Chile. In the Southern cone of America, P. cancrivorus has been found parasitized by several Amblyomma spp. Particularly, in Uruguay, A. aureolatum is the only tick found in this wild carnivore. Piroplasmid hemoparasites were found in Procyon lotor from North America and Japan. In this work, molecular evidence Babesia sp. DNA was found in blood and tissues from road-killed P. cancrivorus from different locations in Uruguay. PCRs targeting 18S rRNA

Trypanosomatidae (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatida) diversity infecting the South American coati Nasua nasua (Carnivora: Procyonidae) in urban forest fragments in the Brazilian Midwest.

INTRODUCTION: South American coatis are reported as key-hosts of trypanosomatid species in Brazilian Pantanal, presenting high parasitemia and infection rates, long-lasting infections, ability to bioaccumulate Trypanosoma evansi, T. rangeli and different genotypes of T. cruzi, and biological features that favor these parasites' transmission. Moreover, this mammal species was also reported parasitized by the monoxenous trypanosomatid Crithidia mellificae and included in the epidemiological scenario of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Campo Grande (CG), Brazilian Midwest. Within this context, the aim o

Search for antibodies against Trichinella in two synanthropic Procyonidae species from southeast Mexico: white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) and raccoons (Procyon lotor).

Trichinella is a nematode that are spread by the consumption of parasitized meat. Carnivora, a mammalian order, serve as key hosts for this parasite. However, evidence of Trichinella in wildlife from the Neotropics is extremely scarce, with reports documenting its presence only for five carnivore species: two Felidae, one Otariidae and two Mustelidae. Other widely distributed species that are consumed as bushmeat, such as Procyonidae, have not been studied in this context. A long-term study was performed for antibodies against Trichinella in coatis (Nasua narica) and common raccoons (Procyon l

Filarial nematodes with zoonotic potential in ring-tailed coatis (Nasua nasua Linnaeus, 1766, Carnivora: Procyonidae) and domestic dogs from Iguaçu National Park, Brazil.

Iguaçu National Park, which contains the largest remnant of Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil and Iguaçu Falls as one of its main visiting points, is a year-round attraction for thousands of domestic and international tourists. Ring-tailed coatis are generalist, opportunistic carnivores that benefit from human association. These animals are the most abundant carnivores in this park, where they come into close contact with tourists and the resident population around the park. Moreover, as the park is surrounded by human dwellings, free roaming domestic dogs are frequently present, favoring the

Is the Articularis Humeri Muscle Homologous to the Coracobrachialis Muscle in Carnivorans? An Evolutionary and Terminological Answer Based on the Shoulder Myology of the Coati (Nasua nasua, Carnivora, Procyonidae).

South American coati (Nasua nasua) is a carnivoran of the suborder Caniformia and family Procyonidae. Anatomical and functional studies have been performed on the thoracic limb muscles of this species. The topology and innervation are necessary to establish a more suitable anatomical terminology and to infer the muscle evolutionary derivation in anatomical studies. Within the shoulder muscles, the articularis humeri muscle is found caudal to the shoulder joint capsule and is innervated by the axillary nerve. The coracobrachialis muscle is medial and is innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve.

Epidemiological study of sporotrichosis and histoplasmosis in captive Latin American wild mammals, São Paulo, Brazil.

Sporotrichosis and histoplasmosis are deep mycosis with a high incidence in human beings in Brazil. In domestic animals histoplasmosis has been described only in dogs, but the occurrence of sporotrichosis among domestic animals in Brazil has been described in dogs, cats, mules and asses. There is also a case of this disease reported in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodites). The purpose of this research was to perform an epidomiological study of these mycoses using delayed hypersensitivity tests (histoplasmin and sporotrichin) in Latin American wild mammals. This research was assayed using 96 healthy

ENDEMIC ORTHOPOXVIRUS CIRCULATING IN PROCYONIDS IN MEXICO.

Limited serosurveillance studies suggested that orthopoxviruses (OPXV) are widespread in the US (e.g., Raccoonpox virus, Skunkpox virus, Volepox virus) and Brazil (Vaccinia virus); however, their animal reservoir(s) remain unconfirmed. Mexican mammal diversity includes several species related to those in which evidence for OPXV infections has been found (Oryzomys, Peromyscus, Microtus, and Procyonidae). The presence of these groups of mammals in Mexico and the evidence of their possible involvement in the maintenance of OPXV in nature suggest the same or similar OPXV are circulating in Mexico.

Normal sonographic anatomy of the abdomen of coatis (Nasua nasua Linnaeus 1766).

BACKGROUND: The use of ultrasound in veterinary medicine is widespread as a diagnostic supplement in the clinical routine of small animals, but there are few reports in wild animals. The objective of this study was to describe the anatomy, topography and abdominal sonographic features of coatis. RESULTS: The urinary bladder wall measured 0.11 ± 0.03 cm. The symmetrical kidneys were in the left and right cranial quadrant of the abdomen and the cortical, medullary and renal pelvis regions were recognized and in all sections. The medullary rim sign was visualized in the left kidney of two coatis

On the Dental Formulae of Brazilian Terrestrial Carnivora (Mammalia).

Key compendia of Neotropical mammals contain conflicting information regarding the dental formulae of Brazilian carnivores. The objective of the present study was to review the dental formulae of Brazilian Canidae, Felidae, Mephitidae, Mustelidae and Procyonidae. We illustrate the dental morphology of all Brazilian genera, and report intra and interspecific tooth variation, and supernumerary teeth. We examined skulls and mandibles of 710 Brazilian terrestrial carnivores, including juvenile and adult specimens. Adults of all genera have three incisors and one canine in each quadrant. Members of

Obstructive cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in a kinkajou (Potos flavus).

A 14.5-yr-old female kinkajou (Potos flavus) was diagnosed with cholelithiasis after an episode of vomiting; diagnostics included biochemical analysis and abdominal ultrasound exam. Despite antimicrobial treatment, cholelithiasis led to cholecystitis. A cholecystotomy was performed to remove choleliths and inspissated bile. Morphological and spectroscopic properties of the choleliths were similar to those of gallstones from the brown pigment family and Streptococcus sp. and Escherichia coli were isolated from the bile. Biliary tract infection is directly related to pathogenesis of brown pigmen

Gross and microscopic anatomy of the pineal gland in Nasua nasua--coati (Linnaeus, 1766).

Nasua nasua, coati, is a mammal of the Carnivora order and Procyonidae family. It lives in bands composed of females and young males. The pineal gland or epiphysis of brain is endocrine, producing the melatonin. Its function is the control of the cycle of light environment, characteristic of day and night. For this research, five adult coatis were used, originating from CECRIMPAS-UNIfeob (Proc. IBAMA 02027.003731/04-76), Brazil. The animals were killed and perfusion-fixed in 10% formaldehyde. Pineals were measured and a medium size was found to be 2.3-mm-long and 1.3-mm-wide. Pineal gland was
