Patients' and professionals' beliefs about the impact of social stigmatization on treatment of gambling-related disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Studies carried out so far have shown that negative stereotypes concerning people with gambling disorders and, in particular, the belief that these people bear personal responsibility for their illness, can significantly contribute to the stigmatization of these people. Shame and fear of stigmatization significantly hinder the decision to start treatment. This study investigates the beliefs of respondents about the impact of stigmatization of people with gambling disorders on the social perception of treatment of gambling disorders and the beliefs of respondents about the impact of

Health-care professionals' use of cancer-related patient education materials: a pilot study.

While the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute expend much effort designing patient education materials, little is known about how health-care professionals use such materials in everyday practice. We piloted a descriptive study of primary care providers in San Francisco. Using a standardized questionnaire, we conducted face-to-face interviews with 71 health-care professionals who responded to a mailed offer of a free set of American Cancer Society (ACS) materials. Most (72%) said their patients rarely or never requested cancer information, yet most (87%) distributed some type

Assessing professional caregiver burden related to patient agitation in dementia: A systematic review of measurement scales.

BackgroundAgitation is a common behavioral and psychological symptom of dementia that places significant burden on caregivers. While its impact on family caregivers is well-documented, its effect on professional caregivers remains underexplored. Additionally, it is unclear whether existing caregiver burden scales adequately capture the International Psychogeriatric Association's (IPA) definition of agitation. Since agitation requires different treatment approaches than cognitive impairment, its distinct burden warrants further investigation.ObjectiveThis systematic review examined scales used

The Views of Health Care Professionals and Laypersons Concerning the Relevance of Health-Related Behaviors in Prioritizing Patients.

This article aims to investigate to what extent health care professionals in Portugal find health-related behaviors relevant as a criterion to priority setting, to study what type of risk behavior they consider relevant in such decisions and to compare their views with those of laypersons. An online questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 178 health care professionals and 295 laypersons. The statistical analysis was performed through the application of generalized linear models and logistic regressions. Health professionals consider more than laypersons that information about h

Patients' and health care professionals' evaluation of health-related quality of life issues in bone metastases.

The objective of this study was to examine the agreement between health care professionals' (HCPs) and patients' evaluation of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) issues for cancer patients with bone metastases. A total of 413 patients and 152 HCPs were interviewed across five centres worldwide. Mean scores were almost always higher for HCPs than for patients. Patients and HCPs agreed that four issues affect HRQOL of bone metastases patients profoundly: 'long-term (chronic) pain', 'difficulty in carrying out usual daily tasks', 'able to perform self-care' and 'able to perform role functioni

Patent foramen ovale-related complications in left ventricular assist device patients: a reappraisal for cardiovascular professionals.

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is an important treatment option for patients with advanced heart failure. The presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) may elicit undesired consequences in LVAD patients: hypoxemia and paradoxical embolization. The variable physiological status of the patient with heart failure can make pre-LVAD implant identification of a PFO elusive. When identified pre- or intraoperatively, PFO is closed at time of LVAD implantation. In the case of delayed diagnosis, percutaneous PFO closure has proven to be a feasible and safe solution. As mechanical circ

Patient and professional use of the root coverage esthetic score (RES) and how it relates to patient satisfaction following periodontal plastic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Following periodontal plastic surgery in the treatment of recession defects, previous studies have reported that patients rate the esthetic outcomes more favorable than dental professionals. The root coverage esthetic score has been developed and suggested to serve as a comprehensive assessment instrument as it addresses several esthetic outcomes following root coverage procedures. However, no study has yet reported on patient use of this instrument. In the present study clinical, esthetic and patient-reported outcomes following periodontal plastic surgery were assessed. When a patient's choices entail risks for others: third-party risks, relational ethics, and responsibilities of rehabilitation professionals.

PURPOSE: Patients receiving rehabilitation care may act in ways that pose risks to the wellbeing of others. There are numerous situations when patients' actions might pose risks to others, including family members, other patients, or society. For example, such risks arise if patients wish to return home to living in an apartment but risk starting a fire while cooking, or if they insist on driving but their health condition makes doing so unsafe. These situations give rise to ethical challenges, including for health professionals as they seek to promote their patient's autonomy while minimizing

Patients' and health professionals' views on shared decision-making in age-related macular degeneration care: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the principal causes of irreversible visual impairment in the older adult population. Recent evidence indicates that there are signs of undertreatment and overtreatment, underdiagnosis and insufficient information provision in AMD care. Shared decision-making (SDM) can aid information sharing between patients and health professionals and enhances high-quality care. This research aimed to gain insight into patients' and professionals' views on SDM in AMD care. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 patients with A
