BACKGROUND: Prolotherapy (proliferative therapy) is a nonsurgical regenerative injection technique that introduces small amounts of hyperosmolar dextrose to the site of painful or degenerated tendons or their insertions. Under ultrasound guidance, a 25-gauge needle is used to fenestrate and inject hyperosmolar dextrose into the injured area of the Achilles tendon. This is found to induce the proliferation of new cells, allowing the regeneration of healthy tissue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment response to prolotherapy in Achilles tendinitis.
METHODS: We reviewed 132 p

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) hypermobility is commonly associated with symptoms such as joint pain, restricted jaw function, and clicking sounds. While prolotherapy is recognized as a conservative treatment method for TMJ disorders, arthrocentesis is frequently employed to manage intra-articular inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of combining prolotherapy with arthrocentesis compared to prolotherapy alone in patients with TMJ hypermobility. A total of 26 patients (mean age: 33.7 years) were retrospectively analyzed and divided into two treatment groups: comb

PURPOSE: To present the results of dextrose prolotherapy undertaken for chronic non-responding coccygodynia in 37 patients.
METHODS: 14 men and 23 women (mean age, 36 years) with chronic coccygodynia not responding to conservative treatment for more than 6 months were included. 27 of them had received local steroid injections. A visual analogue score (VAS) was recorded for all patients before and after injection of 8 ml of 25% dextrose and 2 ml of 2% lignocaine into the coccyx. In 8 patients with a VAS of more than 4 after the second injection, a third injection was given 4 weeks later.

Prolotherapy has focused on entheses as a key source of chronic low back pain, even without clear diagnosis of enthesopathy. Treatment has traditionally been guided by anatomic knowledge and careful palpation. This article integrates ultrasonographic diagnosis of fascial injury with examination findings taught in traditional prolotherapy technique. Thoracolumbar fascial anatomy and biotensegrity theory are used to explain patient presentation and response to treatment at these pathologic findings. Detailed case reports provide proof of concept for the 60-year history of prolotherapy in the tre

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a degenerative disease of the tendons, spurred by repetitive microtrauma leading to an attempt by the body to heal by upregulating local angiogenesis and fibroblast proliferation. Prolotherapy (PT) is the injection of dextrose around the injured tissues to stimulate their spontaneous regeneration. Herein, we have described a case of lateral epicondylitis, diagnosed with clinical and ultrasound (US) examination, where local steroid injections provided relief only for a limited time. We treated the patient with US-guided PT, following which the pain disappeared and

OBJECTIVE: Current treatments for osteoarthritis do not resolve the underlying cause. Dextrose prolotherapy is an alternative method that has been proposed for treatment of osteoarthritis, due to its ability to aid tissue regeneration, improve clinical manifestations, and repair damaged tissue structures, which are pathological conditions in osteoarthritis. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of dextrose prolotherapy compared with other interventions in the management of osteoarthritis.

Significance: Chronic skin ulcers, including venous, diabetic, and pressure ulcers, constitute a major health care burden, affecting 2-6 million people in the United States alone, with projected increases in incidence owing to the aging population and rising epidemic of diabetes. The ulcers are often accompanied by pain. Standard of care fails to heal ∼50% of diabetic foot ulcers and 25% of venous leg ulcers. Even advanced therapies do not heal >60%. Thus there is an unmet need for novel therapies that promote healing and also address the concomitant pain issue. Recent Advances: Prolotherapy i

PURPOSE: To compare the short-term effect of prolotherapy and conservative terapy for the Tietze syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2013 to 2014, twenty-one patients underwent prolotherapy (group 1) and thirteen underwent conservative therapy with analgesics (group 2). A visual analogue score (VAS) was recorded for measurement of pain intensity in all patients before (Pre VAS) and after injection first day (VAS1), first week (VAS2) and fourth week (VAS3). Group 2 were received systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. VAS score was recorded similarly at the same times (Pre VAS, VAS1, VA

Prolotherapy is a method of treatment of painful musculoskeletal conditions whereby a sclerosing agent is injected into an area of tendinosis or osteoarthritis to strengthen and repair painful connective tissue. It is a safe, effective, and relatively inexpensive nonsurgical treatment modality. This article provides a history of prolotherapy, discusses its proposed mechanisms of action, and provides a review of the existing literature on prolotherapy as a treatment for upper extremity pathologies, specifically, hand osteoarthritis, lateral epicondylitis, and rotator cuff disease.

Conservative interventions with simple procedures and predictable benefits are expected by patients with recurrent dislocation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We have introduced a modified technique of prolotherapy that comprises injection of lignocaine and 50% dextrose at a single site in the posterior periarticular tissues. We studied the effects in 45 younger patients (age range 17-59 years) with non-neurogenic recurrent dislocation of the TMJ, and confirmed the therapeutic effect after more than a year's follow-up. There were appreciable improvements in the number of episodes of disl

A 49-year-old man received prolotherapy in the upper cervical region at a local medical clinic. Immediately after the procedure, he felt a sensation resembling an electric shock in his right upper and lower extremities, and continuously complained of numbness and discomfort in the right hemibody. He visited our clinic a week later. Upon physical examination, there were no significant abnormal findings. The visual analog scale was 60 points. T2-weight magnetic resonance images of the cervical spine showed a 0.7 cm sized bright oval spot on the right side of the spinal cord at the level of C4-C5

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) comprise multifactorial conditions involving pain, joint noises, and restricted mandibular motion. Prolotherapy, involving intra-articular or periarticular injection of proliferative agents such as hypertonic dextrose or polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), has recently gained attention as a regenerative therapy for refractory TMDs. This review summarizes current evidence and biological mechanisms underlying prolotherapy in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Literature searches identified clinical and experimental studies evaluating efficacy, safety, a

INTRODUCTION: Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is one of the most common diseases, accompanied by varying degrees of functional limitation and reduced quality of life, especially in younger individuals. Various conservative and operative options are available for the treatment of this disease.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report a case with ANFH that occurred from long-time and uncontrolled glucocorticoid use. In the treatment of the case, we used prolotherapy injections, whose efficacy and reliability were proved in the treatment of other chronic musculoskeletal problems. After the s
