Propionibacterium acnes, a common skin organism, is most notably recognized for its role in acne vulgaris. It also causes postoperative and device-related infections and has been associated with a number of other conditions such as sarcoidosis and synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis (SAPHO), although its precise role as a causative agent remains to be determined. Propionibacterium acnes produces a number of virulence factors and is well known for its inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Recent publication of the P. acnes genome should provide further insights into t

INTRODUCTION: Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive pleomorphic rod-shaped anaerobic saprophyte of the skin, mouth and upper respiratory tract. Although associated with acne vulgaris, it is otherwise reported as a human pathogen only rarely, in various infections, notably cutaneous and osteoarticular, and in endocarditis. We report here a case of bilateral P. acnes-abscessed adenitis of the inguinal folds.
CASE: A 32 year-old man presented with inguinal lymph nodes that had progressively and bilaterally reddened and become painful, with fistulation of the skin and pus. Culture of a surgi

The involvement of microorganisms in the development of acne has a long and checkered history. Just over 100 years ago, Propionibacterium acnes (then known as Bacillus acnes) was isolated from acne lesions, and it was suggested that P. acnes was involved in the pathology of the disease. The 1960s saw the use of antibiotics to treat acne, and the consequent clinical success combined with reductions in P. acnes gave new impetus to the debate. Over the past two decades, the inevitable emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of P. acnes as a consequence of acne therapy not only has reopened the

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) was isolated in high rates and in high concentrations from lymph nodes in patients with sarcoidosis. However, the precise mechanism of granuloma formation and immunomodulation by P. acnes has not been elucidated yet. In patients with sarcoidosis, it was found that the high levels of interleukin-2 released from alveolar lymphocytes as well as interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-6 released from alveolar macrophages were stimulated by P. acnes. These cytokines (mainly IL-2), released by P. acnes in large quantities, play a major role in the comp

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and Propionibacterium granulosum (P. granulosum) are common skin colonizers that are implicated as possible contributing factors in acne vulgaris development. We have established direct visualization tools for the simultaneous detection of these closely related species with immunofluorescence assay and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). As proof of principle, we were able to distinguish P. acnes and P. granulosum bacteria in multi-species populations in vitro as well as in a mock skin infection model upon labelling with 16S rRNA probes in combinatoria

Eight hundred and sixteen isolates of Propionibacterium species (725 of which were Propionibacterium acnes) were isolated from 3,971 specimens submitted for the identification of anaerobic bacteria over the course of 10 years. A total of 94 Propionibacterium isolates (12%) identified in 92 patients were considered to cause infection. The rest of the isolates were determined to be contaminants or of uncertain pathogenic significance. Significant infections caused by Propionibacterium species were associated with the blood in 15 patients, central nervous system in 11, lymph glands in 10, abscess

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases and can affect a large number of individuals at some point in their lives. Though the disease is multi-factorial, the Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a member of resident skin microflora, is implicated in acne inflammation and associated with acne lesions. Common treatments such as antibiotic or benzoyl peroxide nonspecifically reduce bacteria population on the skin, which may disrupt homeostasis and cause further complications such as promoting growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria strains. The anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium Propionibacterium avidum is a common inhabitant of the skin with low pathogenicity. We report a case of P. avidum sacroilitis, psoas abscess and osteomyelitis in a 67-year-old male who had recently undergone surgical repair of an inguinal hernia. The organism was recovered from blood cultures, a bone biopsy specimen and specimens from the abscess. The spectrum of bone and joint infections caused by Propionibacterium is discussed. Infection by Propionibacterium spp. should be considered in patients with bone and joint infections.

We established growth curves for Propionibacterium acnes isolates recovered from eyes with chronic postoperative endophthalmitis. The growth curve plotted the average of the duplicate bacterial concentration against time. The generation time for P. acnes calculated from the growth curves was approximately 5.1 hours. The growth of P. acnes is slower than other anaerobic bacteria. This may account for its delayed appearance in culture of ocular specimens. It may also explain treatment failure if the concentration of an antibiotic injected into the vitreous does not remain at an effective level d

BACKGROUND: To explore the origin of Propionibacterium in surgical wounds and to suggest an optimized strategy for culturing this organism at the time of revision surgery, we studied the presence of this organism on the skin and in the surgical wounds of patients who underwent revision arthroplasty for reasons other than apparent infection.
METHODS: Specimens were cultured in broth and on aerobic and anaerobic media. The presence and degree of positivity of Propionibacterium cultures were correlated with sex. The results of dermal and deep cultures were correlated. Times to positivity and the

Acne is still a major problem, and treatment options are far from ideal. A number of studies suggest that the species Propionibacterium acnes plays an important role in the pathogenesis, and new data point towards molecular mechanisms by which the organism is able to trigger the host inflammatory response. The current knowledge on P. acnes in relation to acne is reviewed.

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is one of the most common infectious diseases in humans. Older adults retain more teeth than did earlier generations and thus are at high risk of root caries. The root surface is covered by cementum, which facilitates the spread of caries lesions into dentinal tissues. Propionibacterium acidifaciens has been detected in dentinal caries lesions; however, the pathogenetic mechanisms are not known. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms of cariogenic P. acidifaciens.
METHODS: Saliva-induced aggregation of P. acidifaciens cells and adherenc

Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium that forms part of the normal flora of the skin, oral cavity, large intestine, the conjunctiva and the external ear canal. Although primarily recognized for its role in acne, P. acnes is an opportunistic pathogen, causing a range of postoperative and device-related infections. These include infections of the bones and joints, mouth, eye and brain. Device-related infections include those of joint prostheses, shunts and prosthetic heart valves. P. acnes may play a role in other conditions, including inflammation of the prostate leading to canc

PURPOSE: We describe an aphakic patient who developed recurrent Propionibacterium acnes endophthalmitis after Molteno tube revision.
PATIENT AND METHOD: The patient presented with a red painful right eye, decreased vision, and a hypopyon. A moderate anterior chamber reaction and mild vitritis were present. Two weeks earlier, the patient had undergone Molteno tube repositioning. A diagnosis of P. acnes endophthalmitis was made after positive culture of anterior chamber needle aspirate.
RESULTS: Initially the patient was treated with repeated intraocular vancomycin injections, to which the eye

INTRODUCTION: Propionibacterium acnes endocarditis is rare and difficult to diagnose. We report a case of Propioniacterium acnes endocarditis revealed by a lower limb fasciitis.
CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old patient presented with recurrent febrile myalgia of the lower limbs, that appeared three years after an aortic surgery (aortic valve sparing reimplentation and ascending aortic prosthesis implantation). Computer tomography showed fasciitis of both legs. Positron emission tomography showed 18Fluorodeoxyglucose intake of the aortic prosthesis and in muscles of the lower limbs. Ten days after b

Cutibacterium (formerly Propionibacterium) acnes13, 16 is a slow growing, gram-positive bacteria that is naturally found in higher concentrations as skin flora on the chest and back, as well as in other areas with greater numbers of hair follicles.25, 37 Most of the reported cases of C. acnes shoulder girdle infection follow arthroplasty surgery,18, 20, 26, 27, 32, 35 which then often requires debridement, administration of intravenous antibiotics, and surgical revision of the implanted device.12, 15, 21, 28-30 In a recent study, 56% of 193 shoulder revisions had a positive culture, 70% of whi

Propionibacterium species rarely cause infective endocarditis. When identified in blood cultures, they may be inappropriately disregarded as skin flora contaminants. The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinical presentation and management of endocarditis due to Propionibacterium species. All cases of endocarditis due to Propionibacterium species that were treated at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA were retrospectively reviewed, and the English language medical literature was searched for all previously published reports. Seventy cases, which included eight from the Mayo Clinic, w
