Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery1987eng
Proplast was implanted in 15 cases of orbital reconstruction. Seven cases were orbital floor fractures, four cases were phthisical enophthalmos, and four cases were anophthalmic enophthalmos. In orbital floor fracture cases, thin (2-mm) Proplast was placed onto the fractured orbital floor after the incarcerated orbital tissue was released. To correct the enophthalmic socket, Proplast was shaped into small pieces (10 x 5 x 2 mm), then inserted into the subperiosteal space from all directions to fill up the orbital cavity. Facial deformities following fractures of the zygomatic complex are common. Included in this article are the indications, work-up, and surgical technique for placement of Proplast implant material to correct the deformity of the malunited zygomatic complex. Three cases are presented to illustrate this approach.

A synthetic leader has been used in 18 cases of medial one-third patellar tendon substitution for the anterior cruciate ligament and in 10 cases of posterior cruciate substitution using the medial head of the gastrocnemius tendon. The device adds length and facilitates manipulation of the transplanted tissues. A retrospective review of 301 meniscectomies with Proplast-Teflon implants was performed. Factors such as interincisal opening, occlusion, joint sounds, joint degeneration, and patient satisfaction were examined. The overall surgical success rate was 88.7%, with an average follow-up period of 33 months. Although many patients demonstrated significant condylar degeneration at 1-year follow-up, such change did not necessarily result in symptomatology or joint dysfunction. A case of bilateral protracted mandibular dislocation complicated by the presence of unusual degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joints is presented. A synopsis of treatment modalities that have been used previously to treat similar conditions is given. Our treatment consisted of bilateral condylectomies, eminectomies, and insertion of Proplast-coated Vitallium condylar prostheses. These procedures resulted in the re-establishment of normal TMJ anatomy, the maintenance of proper posterior mandibular vertical dimension, correction of malocclusion, and relief of the patient's symptoms.

BACKGROUND: A variety of autogenous and alloplastic materials have been used as subperiosteal implants to correct anophthalmic enophthalmos. Proplast II is a synthetic porous composite of Teflon polymer and alumina. Proplast II offers a number of advantages over other commonly used alloplastic materials such as silicone and polymethyl methacrylate. It is light, porous, resilient, malleable, and easy to shape. It can be readily sterilised after shaping. It has been found to integrate with the surrounding tissues, thereby minimising the risk of subsequent implant migration and extrusion.

BACKGROUND: Mid-term clinical results of uncemented femoral components with a Proplast coating have been unfavorable and the low modulus system was abandoned in the mid-1990s. Proplast II disc implants (Vitek Inc, Houston) were used in nine patients (14 joints) who underwent discectomy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). These patients subsequently underwent removal of the implants from 10 to 28 months postplacement due to pain and occlusal changes or radiographic changes in the joints. Severe bone erosion within the temporomandibular joint reconstructed with polytetrafluoroethylene implants is a well-recognized phenomenon. Although erosion into the middle cranial fossa has been reported, we know of no report of dural disruption with cerebrospinal fluid leakage. We report a case of cerebrospinal fluid leak noted at the time of PTFE implant removal and its subsequent management. Perforation of the contralateral glenoid fossa and its reconstruction is also reported.

After discectomy, interpositional implants (IPIs) are believed to provide temporomandibular joint stability and protect against degenerative joint space remodeling. Alloplastic IPIs gained popularity in the late 1970s because the practice showed early success without donor site morbidity.
