Discrete proportional hazards models for mismeasured outcomes.

Outcome mismeasurement can lead to biased estimation in several contexts. Magder and Hughes (1997, American Journal of Epidemiology 146, 195-203) showed that failure to adjust for imperfect outcome measures in logistic regression analysis can conservatively bias estimation of covariate effects, even when the mismeasurement rate is the same across levels of the covariate. Other authors have addressed the need to account for mismeasurement in survival analysis in selected cases (Snapinn, 1998, Biometrics 54, 209-218; Gelfand and Wang, 2000, Statistics in Medicine 19, 1865-1879; Balasubramanian a

Test for additive interaction in proportional hazards models.

PURPOSE: We describe a method for testing and estimating a two-way additive interaction between two categorical variables, each of which has greater than or equal to two levels. METHODS: We test additive and multiplicative interactions in the same proportional hazards model and measure additivity by relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), proportion of disease attributable to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S). A simulation study was used to compare the performance of these measures of additivity. Data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort study with a total of 15,7

Inference for a family of survival models encompassing the proportional hazards and proportional odds models.

For survival data regression, the Cox proportional hazards model is the most popular model, but in certain situations the Cox model is inappropriate. Various authors have proposed the proportional odds model as an alternative. Yang and Prentice recently presented a number of easily implemented estimators for the proportional odds model. Here we show how to extend the methods of Yang and Prentice to a family of survival models that includes the proportional hazards model and proportional odds model as special cases. The model is defined in terms of a Box-Cox transformation of the survival funct

Proportional hazards frailty models for recurrent methadone maintenance treatment.

The authors' objective in this study was to identify determinants of time to discontinuation of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) across multiple treatment episodes. Population-level data on drug dispensations for all patients receiving methadone for opioid maintenance throughout the tenure of the British Columbia, Canada, methadone program to date (1996-2007) were extracted from an administrative database. Proportional hazards frailty models were developed to assess factors associated with time to discontinuation from recurrent MMT episodes. A total of 17,005 patients experienced 32,656 t

Generating survival times to simulate Cox proportional hazards models.

Simulation studies present an important statistical tool to investigate the performance, properties and adequacy of statistical models in pre-specified situations. One of the most important statistical models in medical research is the proportional hazards model of Cox. In this paper, techniques to generate survival times for simulation studies regarding Cox proportional hazards models are presented. A general formula describing the relation between the hazard and the corresponding survival time of the Cox model is derived, which is useful in simulation studies. It is shown how the exponential

Marginal proportional hazards models for clustered interval-censored data with time-dependent covariates.

The Botswana Combination Prevention Project was a cluster-randomized HIV prevention trial whose follow-up period coincided with Botswana's national adoption of a universal test and treat strategy for HIV management. Of interest is whether, and to what extent, this change in policy modified the preventative effects of the study intervention. To address such questions, we adopt a stratified proportional hazards model for clustered interval-censored data with time-dependent covariates and develop a composite expectation maximization algorithm that facilitates estimation of model parameters withou

Estimation in a Cox proportional hazards cure model.

Some failure time data come from a population that consists of some subjects who are susceptible to and others who are nonsusceptible to the event of interest. The data typically have heavy censoring at the end of the follow-up period, and a standard survival analysis would not always be appropriate. In such situations where there is good scientific or empirical evidence of a nonsusceptible population, the mixture or cure model can be used (Farewell, 1982, Biometrics 38, 1041-1046). It assumes a binary distribution to model the incidence probability and a parametric failure time distribution t

Comparing two crossing hazard rates by Cox proportional hazards modelling.

Motivated by a clinical trial of zinc nasal spray for the treatment of the common cold, we consider the problem of comparing two crossing hazard rates. A comprehensive review of the existing methods for dealing with the crossing hazard rates problem is provided. A new method, based on modelling the crossing hazard rates, is proposed and implemented under the Cox proportional hazards framework. The main advantage of the proposed method is the utilization of the Box-Cox transformation which covers a wide range of hazard crossing patterns. Simulation studies are conducted for comparing the perfor

Functional form diagnostics for Cox's proportional hazards model.

We propose a new type of residual and an easily computed functional form test for the Cox proportional hazards model. The proposed test is a modification of the omnibus test for testing the overall fit of a parametric regression model, developed by Stute, González Manteiga, and Presedo Quindimil (1998, Journal of the American Statistical Association93, 141-149), and is based on what we call censoring consistent residuals. In addition, we develop residual plots that can be used to identify the correct functional forms of covariates. We compare our test with the functional form test of Lin, Wei,

Outcome-Adaptive Lasso for Cox Proportional Hazards Model.

While randomized controlled trials remain the gold standard for estimating causal effects in medical research, they are not always practical. Consequently, observational data become a necessary alternative, though it introduces confounding bias due to the lack of randomization. Propensity score modeling mitigates this bias but is highly sensitive to covariate selection. To address this critical limitation in survival analysis, we propose the outcome-adaptive Lasso (OAL)-Cox model-a novel variable selection framework for causal inference for right-censored data. The proposed method integrates t

Mixture proportional hazards cure model with latent variables.

A mixture proportional hazards cure model with latent variables is proposed. The proposed model assesses the effects of the observed and latent risk factors on the hazards of uncured subjects and the cure rate through a proportional hazards model and a logistic model, respectively. Factor analysis is employed to measure the latent variables through correlated multiple indicators. Maximum likelihood estimation is performed through a Gaussian quadratic technique that approximates the integration over the latent variables. A piecewise constant function is used for the unspecified baseline hazard

Exploring the nature of covariate effects in the proportional hazards model.

We discuss an exploratory technique for investigating the nature of covariate effects in Cox's proportional hazards model. This technique features an additive term sigma p1 fj(chi ij), in place of the usual linear term sigma p1 chi ij beta j, where chi i1, chi i2,...,chi ip are covariate values for the ith individual. The fj(.) are unspecified smooth functions that are estimated using scatterplot smoothers. These functions can be used for descriptive purposes or to suggest transformations of the covariates. The estimation technique is a variation of the local scoring algorithm for generalized

Goftte: A R package for assessing goodness-of-fit in proportional (sub) distributions hazards regression models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we introduce a new R package goftte for goodness-of-fit assessment based on cumulative sums of model residuals useful for checking key assumptions in the Cox regression and Fine and Gray regression models. METHODS: Monte-Carlo methods are used to approximate the null distribution of cumulative sums of model residuals. To limit the computational burden, the main routines used to approximate the null distributions are implemented in a parallel C++ programming environment. Numerical studies are carried out to evaluate the empirical type I error rates of t

A partially linear proportional hazards model for current status data.

For analyzing current status data, a flexible partially linear proportional hazards model is proposed. Modeling flexibility is attained through using monotone splines to approximate the baseline cumulative hazard function, as well as B-splines to accommodate nonlinear covariate effects. To facilitate model fitting, a computationally efficient and easy to implement expectation-maximization algorithm is developed through a two-stage data augmentation process involving carefully structured latent Poisson random variables. Asymptotic normality and the efficiency of the spline estimator of the regr

On the proportional hazards model for occupational and environmental case-control analyses.

BACKGROUND: Case-control studies are generally designed to investigate the effect of exposures on the risk of a disease. Detailed information on past exposures is collected at the time of study. However, only the cumulated value of the exposure at the index date is usually used in logistic regression. A weighted Cox (WC) model has been proposed to estimate the effects of time-dependent exposures. The weights depend on the age conditional probabilities to develop the disease in the source population. While the WC model provided more accurate estimates of the effect of time-dependent covariates

A proportional hazards model taking account of long-term survivors.

A proportional hazards (PH) model is modified to take account of long-term survivors by assuming the cumulative hazard to be bounded but otherwise unspecified to yield an improper survival function. A marginal likelihood is derived under the restriction for type I censoring patterns. For a PH model with cure, the marginal and the partial likelihood are not the same. In the absence of covariate information, the estimate of the cure rate based on the marginal likelihood reduces to the value of the Kaplan-Meier estimate at the end of the study. An example of low asymptotic efficiency of the parti

Adjusting for measurement error in the Cox proportional hazards regression model.

BACKGROUND: The Harvard Six Cities Study (Dockery et al.) was the first large-scale cohort study to demonstrate an association between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and mortality in urban centres in the United States. Because of the pivotal role of this study in the establishment of the first U.S. national ambient air quality objective for PM2.5 in 1997 (Greenbaum et al.), the results of this study were subjected to an independent detailed re-analysis to test the robustness of the findings to alternative analytic methods (Kr

Reinfection hazard of hand-foot-mouth disease in Wuhan, China, using Cox-proportional hazard model.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute infectious disease caused by serotypes of the enterovirus (EV) family. HFMD reinfection occurs commonly in lack of cross-protection between different EV serotypes. In this study, we investigated the hazards of HFMD reinfection using Cox-proportional hazard model. Retrospective data of 95 209 HFMD cases in Wuhan during 2008-2015 was used. Kaplan-Meier survival methods and Cox-proportional hazard model were used to estimate the hazard probabilities. Of the all HFMD cases, about 2% experienced reinfection (1842/95 209). Kaplan-Meier curves revealed the r

A proportional hazards model for multivariate interval-censored failure time data.

This paper focuses on the methodology developed for analyzing a multivariate interval-censored data set from an AIDS observational study. A purpose of the study was to determine the natural history of the opportunistic infection cytomeglovirus (CMV) in an HIV-infected individual. For this observational study, laboratory tests were performed at scheduled clinic visits to test for the presence of the CMV virus in the blood and in the urine (called CMV shedding in the blood and urine). The study investigators were interested in determining whether the stage of HIV disease at study entry was predi

On a non-proportional hazards regression model for repeated medical random counts.

A wholly parametric non-proportional hazards survival model is introduced. The model retains Cox's constant of proportionality as the leading term in the relative risk but permits additional flexibility by modelling the relative risk as a function of time. Covariate effects are modelled on the log odds scale, a choice which is more in keeping with the spirit of the multiple logistic function, rather than on the logarithmic scale, as in the proportional hazards model. Some basic properties of the model are described. A special feature of the model is that, when the proportional hazards model ap
