Percutaneous implant retention of a nasal prosthesis.

This report describes an approach to the simultaneous retention of a nasal prosthesis and an intraoral prosthesis for a patient who had undergone a total rhinectomy with resection of the upper lip and premaxilla. At the time of the nasal resection, 2 dental implants were placed adjacent to the resection margins in the first premolar positions. These were used to anchor an intraoral, milled titanium bar and overdenture to replace the missing anterior teeth and provide support for the upper lip, which had been reconstructed with a vascularized radial forearm free-flap. The titanium bar also inco

A modified technique for retention of orbital prosthesis.

An orbital defect (congenital or acquired) causes severe facial asymmetry and disfigurement, which results in psychological and social disturbances to the patient. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. Success of the prosthesis depends primarily on satisfactory retention of the same. This clinical report illustrates rehabilitation of a patient with an orbital defect by fabricating a hollow orbital prosthesis, utilizing anatomical undercuts for retention using an acrylic resin template relined by

Outcomes of the Dual Mobility Trapeziometacarpal Prosthesis versus Retentive Cup Prosthesis: Review of 118 Cases.

Since its invention, the ball-and-socket prosthesis has played a significant role in treating carpometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb. One of the main postoperative complications remains prosthetic dislocation. To reduce this risk, engineers developed new designs - primarily the retentive cup and the dual-mobility cup. The aim of this study was to compare the stability and outcomes of these two designs, focusing specifically on dislocation as the primary variable. All Maia prostheses (n=118) implanted between 2019 and 2023 at a single institution by two surgeons using the same surgical tec

Retention and fatigue performance of modified polyetheretherketone clasps for removable prosthesis.

PURPOSE: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is considered as an alternative to metal material for removable partial denture (RPD). However, the retentive force is not strong as a metal RPD. This study investigated the retention and fatigue performance of PEEK clasps with different proportions of clasp arm engaging the undercut to verify a new strategy to improve their clinical performance. METHODS: Three groups (n = 10/group) of PEEK clasps with their terminal 1/3, 2/3 and the whole of retentive arms engaging the undercut were fabricated along with a group (n = 10) of conventional cobalt-chrome (CoC

Two-Stage Debridement With Prosthesis Retention for Acute Periprosthetic Joint Infections.

BACKGROUND: Historically, infection control rates with debridement and component retention have been poor in the management of acute prosthetic joint infections. We previously described a 2-stage debridement with prosthesis retention protocol for acute periprosthetic joint infection and reported a 90% success rate in a sample of 20 patients. METHODS: A retrospective review of 83 patients who underwent a 2-stage debridement with implant retention with a minimum 1-year follow-up was performed. Patient data were primarily analyzed to determine infection control rates. Infections were considered

Treatment of acute periprosthetic infections with prosthesis retention: Review of current concepts.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication after total joint arthroplasty, occurring in approximately 1%-2% of all cases. With growing populations and increasing age, PJI will have a growing effect on health care costs. Many risk factors have been identified that increase the risk of developing PJI, including obesity, immune system deficiencies, malignancy, previous surgery of the same joint and longer operating time. Acute PJI occurs either postoperatively (4 wk to 3 mo after initial arthroplasty, depending on the classification system), or via hematogenous spreading a

Factors associated with postoperative urinary retention in patients undergoing penile prosthesis implantation.

Placement of penile prosthesis had been well described in the outpatient setting, however, one barrier to same-day discharge is postoperative urinary retention (POUR). POUR remains a condition encountered during ambulatory surgical procedures and has yet to be characterized in patients undergoing penile prosthesis. We characterized POUR in a cohort of penile prosthesis recipients along with risk factors and management. Patients undergoing penile prosthesis implantation from 2014 through 2020 without pre-existing retention were included. All patients underwent a void trial immediately following

Subdural hematoma--a rare complication of removal of osseointegrated auricular prosthesis retention system.

Periauricular osseointegrated prosthesis retention systems have been proven safe and effective in the management of microtia. Intracranial hemorrhage has been previously reported with implantation but is rare. We report a case of subdural hemorrhage following removal of an auricular prosthesis implant system. This case highlights the role of imaging, surgical technique, and neurosurgical support in prevention and management of intracranial hemorrhage associated with osseointegrated device removal.

A novel non-invasive retentive approach of an interim auricular prosthesis: A case report.

Auricular reconstruction is a challenging issue. It can either be performed surgically or by the use of prosthesis. Definitive auricular prosthesis can be retained by craniofacial implants. Temporary (interim) prosthesis can be retained using adhesives, engaging anatomical undercuts and using mechanical means of retention-like spectacles. This case report proposes a new mechanical means of retention for a temporary auricular prosthesis, which can be suitable for non-eyeglass wearing females or for female patients who refuse to wear eyeglass for retaining their prosthesis.

The use of zygomatic implants for the retention of nasal prosthesis following rhinectomy: the Morriston experience.

Reconstruction and rehabilitation following rhinectomy remains controversial and presents a complex problem. Although reconstruction with local and microvascular flaps is a valid option, the aesthetic results may not always be satisfactory. The aesthetic results achieved with a nasal prosthesis are excellent; however patient acceptance relies on a secure method of retention. The technique used and results obtained in a large series of patients undergoing rhinectomy and receiving zygomatic implants for the retention of a nasal prosthesis are described here. A total of 56 zygomatic implants (28

Outcome of penicillin-susceptible streptococcal prosthetic joint infection treated with debridement and retention of the prosthesis.

Debridement with retention of the prosthesis was the initial treatment modality for 19 cases of penicillin-susceptible streptococcal prosthetic joint infection that occurred in 18 patients who presented to the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) during 1969-1998. All of the cases of prosthetic joint infection occurred >30 days after implantation of the prosthesis, which was well fixed at the time of debridement. The median duration of symptoms before debridement was 4 days (range, 1-10 days). Treatment failure (defined as relapse of infection with the original microorganism) occurred in 2 cases

Good quality of life outcomes after treatment of prosthetic joint infection with debridement and prosthesis retention.

Patients treated for early prosthetic joint infection (PJI) with surgical debridement and prosthesis retention have a rate of successful infection eradication that is similar to patients treated with the traditional approach of prosthesis exchange. It is therefore important to consider other outcomes after prosthetic joint infection treatment that may influence management decisions, such as quality of life (QOL). Our aim was to describe infection cure rates and quality of life for patients with prosthetic joint infection treated with debridement and prosthesis retention and to determine if tre
