Diverse organ-specific localisation of a chemical defence, cyanogenic glycosides, in flowers of eleven species of Proteaceae.

Floral chemical defence strategies remain under-investigated, despite the significance of flowers to plant fitness. We used cyanogenic glycosides (CNglycs)-constitutive secondary metabolites that deter herbivores by releasing hydrogen cyanide, but also play other metabolic roles-to ask whether more apparent floral tissues and those most important for fitness are more defended as predicted by optimal defence theories, and what fine-scale CNglyc localisation reveals about function(s)? Florets of eleven species from the Proteaceae family were dissected to quantitatively compare the distribution o

Unique and highly specific cyanogenic glycoside localization in stigmatic cells and pollen in the genus Lomatia (Proteaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral chemical defence strategies remain understudied despite the significance of flowers to plant fitness, and the fact that many flowers contain secondary metabolites that confer resistance to herbivores. Optimal defence and apparency theories predict that the most apparent plant parts and/or those most important to fitness should be most defended. To test whether within-flower distributions of chemical defence are consistent with these theories we used cyanogenic glycosides (CNglycs), which are constitutive defence metabolites that deter herbivores by releasing hydroge

Spatial genetic structure reflects extensive clonality, low genotypic diversity and habitat fragmentation in Grevillea renwickiana (Proteaceae), a rare, sterile shrub from south-eastern Australia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The association of clonality, polyploidy and reduced fecundity has been identified as an extinction risk for clonal plants. Compromised sexual reproduction limits both their ability to adapt to new conditions and their capacity to disperse to more favourable environments. Grevillea renwickiana is a prostrate, putatively sterile shrub reliant on asexual reproduction. Dispersal is most likely limited by the rate of clonal expansion via rhizomes. The nine localized populations constituting this species provide an opportunity to examine the extent of clonality and spatial geno

Divergent Phosphorus-Mining Strategies in Simple and Compound Cluster Roots in Extremely Phosphorus-Impoverished Soils in Southwest Australia.

Most Proteaceae and some Fabaceae species produce specialised cluster roots (CRs), and are abundant in severely phosphorus (P)-impoverished soils in southwest Australia. Two types of CRs, compound and simple, have been identified. However, the difference in their P-mining strategies remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted glasshouse and field experiments to compare the P-acquisition strategies among 18 CR-producing species in Proteaceae and Fabaceae. Proteaceae produced a significantly larger mass of CRs than Fabaceae. Particularly, Banksia species produced the largest mass of compound CRs an

Eudicots from severely phosphorus-impoverished environments preferentially allocate phosphorus to their mesophyll.

Plants allocate nutrients to specific leaf cell types, with commelinoid monocots preferentially allocating phosphorus (P) to the mesophyll and calcium (Ca) to the epidermis, whereas the opposite is thought to occur in eudicots. However, Proteaceae from severely P-impoverished habitats present the same P-allocation pattern as monocots. This raises the question of whether preferential P allocation to mesophyll cells is a phylogenetically conserved trait, exclusive to commelinoid monocots and a few Proteaceae, or a trait that has evolved multiple times to allow plants to cope with very low soil P

Cluster roots of Embothrium coccineum modify their metabolism and show differential gene expression in response to phosphorus supply.

Embothrium coccineum produces cluster roots (CR) to acquire sparingly soluble phosphorus (P) from the soil through the exudation of organic compounds. However, the physiological mechanisms involved in carbon drainage through its roots, as well as the gene expression involved in the biosynthesis of carboxylates and P uptake, have not been explored. In this work, we evaluated the relationship between carboxylate exudation rate and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity in roots of E. coccineum seedlings grown in a nutrient-poor volcanic substrate. Second, we evaluated CR formation and t

Environmental and genetic differentiation underlies divergence in phosphorus-acquisition strategies of Embothrium coccineum cultivated on volcanic substrates of contrasting age.

Phosphorus (P) limitation in volcanic soils imposes strong selective pressure on root traits that regulate nutrient acquisition, carbon allocation, and rhizosphere biochemical modification. In Proteaceae, P acquisition is often mediated by cluster roots and carboxylate exudation, yet it remains unclear whether environmentally and genetically differentiated populations within a species rely on contrasting structural and biochemical strategies. We tested whether Embothrium coccineum populations from contrasting environments differ genetically and in P-acquisition traits using two complementary a

A genetic evaluation of conservation units and four decades of translocation history for Banksia cuneata, an iconic threatened species in a biodiversity hotspot.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Translocation and genetic data are increasingly used in tandem for threatened species recovery. However, for species managed over many decades, records may be incomplete and have limited genetic data. Modern genetic analysis can assist with understanding the consequences of historical translocations and is key to informing ongoing management. Here, we assess genetic patterns in Banksia cuneata, an iconic species that has been under conservation management since 1980, to clarify conflicting signals from early genetic studies and evaluate the species' translocation history.

Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia secondary to allergic contact dermatitis to Grevillea Robyn Gordon.

We report a case of pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH) in a 55-year-old woman following allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to Grevillea Robyn Gordon. We believe this to be the first reported case of PEH secondary to ACD, and postulate that this was an exaggerated response to severe ACD as a result of a lack of topical treatment.

Exclusion of bird pollinators impacts mating system and reduces offspring fitness in a pollination-generalist tree.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In comparison to pollinating insects and non-flying mammals (NFMs), nectarivorous birds might display behaviours leading to greater pollen carryover. Therefore, plants pollinated by birds might display higher levels of paternal diversity and outcrossing than those pollinated by insects and NFMs, with associated fitness benefits for seeds and seedlings. Here, we test these predictions using a plant where birds, insects and NFMs are all frequent visitors to flowers. METHODS: An experiment manipulating access to flowers of Banksia menziesii (Proteaceae) was conducted. Treatm

Antigenotoxicity of Roupala montana extract in the mouse micronucleus and comet assays.

Roupala montana Aubl. (Proteaceae) is a typical savannah species and native to tropical South America that has a moderate mortality for adult forms of Schistossoma mansoni. Because this species has been little studied, the aim of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of R. montana extract on DNA damage induced by methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in peripheral blood cells and liver of Swiss mice using the micronucleus and comet assay, respectively. R. montana dichloromethane extract was prepared from a stock solution (0.5 mg/mL) in 5% dimethyl sulfoxide in water. Animals received a sing

The fire ephemeral Tersonia cyathiflora (Gyrostemonaceae) germinates in response to smoke but not the butenolide 3-methyl-2H-furo[2,3-c]pyran-2-one.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tersonia cyathiflora (Gyrostemonaceae) is a fire ephemeral with an obligate requirement for smoke to germinate. Whether it is stimulated to germinate by 3-methyl-2H-furo[2,3-c]pyran-2-one (karrikinolide, KAR(1)), the butenolide isolated from smoke that stimulates the germination of many other smoke-responsive species, is tested. METHODS: Seeds of T. cyathiflora were buried in autumn following collection and were exhumed 1 year later, as this alleviates dormancy and enables seeds to germinate in response to smoke-water. Exhumed seeds were tested with smoke-water and KAR(1)

Allergic contact dermatitis from exposure to Grevillea robusta in New Zealand.

There are a number of reports in the literature of allergic contact dermatitis as a result of exposure to the sawdust and plant parts of Grevillea robusta. While this tree is prevalent in New Zealand, there seems to have been no previous published accounts of contact dermatitis, although anecdotal evidence indicates that such cases may be common. Two brief case reports are provided regarding severe phytodermatitis to G. robusta among professional arborists in New Zealand. As with other common plants capable of inducing allergic contact dermatitis, greater awareness among arborists, orchardists

Biochemical phosphorus allocation is linked to photosynthetic phosphorus-use efficiency in a phosphorus-impoverished environment.

Highly efficient phosphorus (P)-use strategies have evolved in plants, allowing them to thrive in severely P-impoverished environments. However, it remains unclear how allocating leaf P to biochemical fractions, including specific P-containing metabolites, contributes to instantaneous photosynthetic P-use efficiency (iPPUE) and the position of species along the leaf economics spectrum (LES). We measured LES-associated traits (leaf mass per area, light-saturated photosynthetic rate, and P and nitrogen concentrations) and iPPUE in 12 coexisting Proteaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae and Ericaceae from

An unusual cause of caustic burns.

Two children in far northern Western Australia tattooed their arms with maangga berries (Grevillea pyramidalis ssp. leucadendron), which resulted in unintentional, caustic, partial thickness skin burns requiring specialist burn care. An understanding of the chemistry of the burn agent (5-n-alkyl resorcinol), appropriate first aid management and referral, and possible physiological sequelae are essential for optimal medical management and preventive community education.

In vivo hepatoprotective and nephroprotective effects of Stenocarpus sinuatus leaf extract against ifosfamide-induced toxicity in rats.

Ifosfamide (IFOS) is a broad-spectrum chemotherapeutic agent that has been extensively used for breast cancer and other solid tumors. Unfortunately, its use is associated with toxicities of several organs. Stenocarpus sinuatus is an Australian tree belonging to the Proteaceae family. In the current study, the phytochemical constituents of S. sinuatus methanol leaf extract (SSLE) were assessed. In addition, the protective effect of SSLE against IFOS-induced nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity was evaluated. Rats were randomly divided into six groups: control, IFOS (50 mg/kg), IFOS + SSLE (100 mg/

Do carbon-based defences reduce foliar damage? Habitat-related effects on tree seedling performance in a temperate rainforest of Chiloé Island, Chile.

Carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs), such as phenols or tannins, have been considered as one of the most important and general chemical barriers of woody plants against a diverse array of herbivores. Herbivory has been described as a critical factor affecting the growth and survival of newly established tree seedlings or juveniles then, the presence of secondary metabolites as defences against herbivores should be a primary strategy to reduce foliar damage. We examined whether light-induced changes in leaf phenolic chemistry affected insect herbivory on seedlings of two rainforest tree sp

The assembly of the Cape flora is consistent with an edaphic rather than climatic filter.

The Cape flora is compositionally biased, being dominated by a few fynbos clades (such as Iridaceae, Ericaceae, Proteaceae and Restionaceae) that make up major part of the distinct heathland vegetation in the Cape Floristic Region. Uncertainty exists concerning what excluded the subtropical to tropical palm-dominated woodland/forest vegetation that was the dominant component in the CFR in the Paleocene and allowed the fynbos clades, which are largely derived from outside Africa, to establish and radiate. Two filters have been proposed. The first postulates that the establishment of the Mediter

Seed-breaking forces exerted by orang-utans with their teeth in captivity and a new technique for estimating forces produced in the wild.

Orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus) at the Singapore Zoological Gardens were presented with two thick-shelled edible seeds, Mezzettia parviflora (Annonaceae) and Macadamia ternifolia (Proteaceae) in order to estimate their maximum bite forces. The orang-utans could break the Macadamia seeds in one bite, while those of Mezzettia required repeated attempts. Examination of shell fragments showed that many had scratches and some had clear, but small (ca. 1-2 mm diameter), impressions on them. Building upon this information, semi-imitative tests were performed on the seeds in a universal testing machine b
