Potential Toxic Levels of Cyanide in Almonds (Prunus amygdalus), Apricot Kernels (Prunus armeniaca), and Almond Syrup.

Under normal environmental conditions, many plants synthesize cyanogenic glycosides, which are able to release hydrogen cyanide upon hydrolysis. Each year, there are frequent livestock and occasional human victims of cyanogenic plants consumption. The present work aims to determine the hydrocyanic acid content in different samples of cyanogenic plants, selected from the Tunisian flora, and in the almond syrup. In order to evaluate their toxicity and their impact on the consumer health in the short term as well as in the long term, using the ISO 2164-1975 NT standard, relating to the determinat

Cyanide toxicity secondary to apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel meal ingestion in a canine.

Cyanide is one of the most rapidly acting, lethal poisons in human and veterinary medicine. This case report discusses a novel case of cyanide toxicity from apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel ingestion in a canine and alternative treatment modalities. A 9.5-year-old female spayed Golden Retriever presented for vomiting and collapse after ingestion of apricot kernel meal. Laboratory findings, including a high anion gap metabolic acidosis with severe hyperlactatemia, clinical signs, and known ingestion of apricot kernels, were suggestive of cyanide toxicity. The dog was treated with crystalloid a

Evidence-based hepatic and renal toxicity evaluation of Prunus armeniaca L. seeds in albino Wistar rats.

The present study is a novel approach conducted to investigate dose dependent hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity of aqueous extract of Prunus armeniaca L. seeds in Albino rats. The use of the seeds is limited since the seeds have been subject of high controversy because of the presence of amygdalin, (Vitamin B-17) which in some studies revealed toxicity while in others incurred anti-cancerous ability and also scarce availability of toxicity evaluation studies which stimulates the need to expedite this study which would allow utilization of seeds in the pursuit of formulating novel remedies. 100

Interactions Between Ephedra sinica and Prunus armeniaca: From Stereoselectivity to Deamination as a Metabolic Detoxification Mechanism of Amygdalin.

Mahuang-Xingren (MX, Ephedra sinica Stapf-Prunus armeniaca L.) is a classic herb pair used in traditional Chinese medicine. This combined preparation reduces the toxicity of Xingren through the stereoselective metabolism of its main active ingredient amygdalin. However, whether stereoselectivity is important in the pharmacokinetic properties of amygdalin either in the traditional decoction or in the dispensing granules is unclear. Amygdalin is hydrolyzed to its metabolite, prunasin, which produces hydrogen cyanide by degradation of the cyano group. A comprehensive study of the metabolic pathwa

Comprehensive investigation of Prunus armeniaca for natural green synthesis of carbon quantum dots; Applications as fluorescent nano-probes for ramipril.

The use of natural precursors for green synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is attracting significant attention. However, concerns regarding the characters and performance of CQDs derived from the same natural resource can be raised. In the proposed research, Prunus armeniaca (apricots) juice was utilized as a natural precursor for CQDs through a single-step microwave-assisted method at 700 W for 5 min. The obtained CQDs were characterized and then assessed against those few that had been reported from apricots from different geographical and botanical origins. The developed CQDs showed ex

Genome-wide identification of the WRKY gene family in apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) and functional characterization of PaWRKY57 in salt stress tolerance.

Soil salinization severely restricts the growth, yield, and industrial development of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.). WRKY transcription factors play crucial roles in plant responses to abiotic stresses. However, the genome-wide characteristics of the WRKY family in apricot and their functional mechanisms in salt tolerance remain unclear. In this study, we identified 58 PaWRKY genes in apricot and characterized their phylogeny, chromosomal distribution, and gene structure. Based on transcriptomic and phylogenetic analyses, PaWRKY57 (homologous to AtWRKY33) was selected as a key salt-responsive
